Freeze kills Over winter perennials or is it drainage..

I keep hearing how you can't let perennials in pots freeze or they will die... and that baffles me. The ground freezes the roots of perennials in the ground. I mean we do freeze to 5 feet deep...

So Please 'splain to me what you think, and more importantly how you'd keep 3" pots or Perennials from dying.

I could put them in baby pools with holes and gravel for drainage some ting to repel rodents fill the whole thing in w/ compost top it w/ chicken wire and maybe berm the outside of the pool w/ hay or compost and pray...
