3 more Mouses coming next year

Just saw some new Mouses from Q&Z Nursery for 2013, "Giantland Sunny Mouse Ears" (gold) and "Ruffled Mouse Ears, Also from Walters Gardens is "Church Mouse" How many more are there going to be!!!! They seem to multiply faster than Voles.

Blue Mice is a NR plant from Europe with a Sieboldiana background.

Country Mouse is similar in appearance to the other "mice hostas", but actually is a sport of Bill Dress's Blue.

Giantland Mouse Cheese and Giantland Sunny Mouse Ears are J. Miller & T. Meyer seedlings of Blue Mouse Ears.

Mini Mouse is a R. Goodwin seedling of unknown parentage.

Minnie Mouse (= Missie Mouse) is a K. Squires seedling of unknown parentage.

Lots of potential here for mice collections. There is a great photo in the most recent AHS journal of 15 mice all in one picture - makes it easy to see the differences.

lol catsrose! that's what i said after this spring, and meant it too. But i have resigned to no more until another irresistable sale. I was ahead of the game this summer making beds in the back yard with the rock i bought and figured next spring i would plant them, until i cashed in on the 2 vintage sales, skipping phase II as i already had bought some on the list already, but 60 roses later had to struggle to get more beds completed to be ready for them. I even made a couple of extra little beds, but the roses i want to put in them aren't on sale so i can wait. then i mowed the barn lot which sparked another idea to plant rugosas along the fence line to keep down the round up resistant, weed eater eater giant ragweed at bay, well perhaps in the next decade. I have to stop, i mean really, this is getting ridiculous. I wonder if aa works for roses?

I just didn't get to do everything I wanted to do this spring but I was happy with what I did get done. Planted lots of new stuff that was similar (only improved) from old stuff I used to have and that died out with all the moving of plants necessary with my hardscape budgets. I just didn't get all the seeds started that I had hoped to do. Well, Great intentions and everything just never gets done. I am not going to have any self seeded lupines. I deadheaded them all right after they bloomed. I wanted my plants to get established, not stress themselves making seed. But I just love the lupine area. It perfect there in front of some daylilies. The lupines make the spring show and the daylilies the summer show. The lupine folliage looks good there in front of the daylilies all year long. In fact those lupines are growing lots of new leaves and look happy. They do get some shade, which is good in this hot weather. Truthfully, they are in the perfect spot for my yard and garden. I do alsso have that row of the Woodfield hybrids lupines which are an improved strain of Russell hybreds. Those were the tiny plants I bought from Bluestone on half price. They are not so tiny now, growing really well. I put them in another area, this time in the back as this type has taller blooms. I hope it looks great next spring. But these really seem to like there spot also. They look green and lush.

Sudie, I've been a lurker for awhile, and have just now "joined". I hope you don't mind my contribution! 1 - I shop for Christmas all year round (birthdays, too). I'm one of those oh-I-think-______-will-like-this type people. Everyone I know goes out and buys whatever they want when they want it, so there's really no point in me trying to get EXACTLY what I hear the person say they would like. I have no kids, so hubby and I don't have to worry about what the kids want from Santa. And - I have Christmas and/or birthday bought no later than September. 2 - When I buy something, I wrap it very soon after bringing it home. I have an empty closet in my office that houses all wrapping paper and bought gifts. So everything goes in there quite nicely! 3 - I have Christmas cards written and addressed no later than Oct 31. No one I know would up and decide to move, then get moved before Christmas, so change of address is not a problem. The week after Thanksgiving, dig the cards out and mail them. 4 - I am the boss at work, so I always close the day after Thanksgiving. That's when Christmas goes up. It WILL be finished before the weekend is over. I also close the day after Christmas. That's when it comes down. It WILL be down before the end of the day. Funny how Christmas doesn't take near as long to take down as it does to put it up! 5 - I'm with Labmomma (I'm a Pugmomma, BTW). Plastic bins are the best thing since peanut butter! Each bin(s) has it's own room, so I can bring everything down and put it back up without wondering where this or that is. And, if I decide I don't want a tree in our bedroom this year, I don't take that bin(s) down out of the attic. 6 - Everything I cook for Christmas must have nothing but fairly not perishable items. I have my list made and all ingredients bought at least 3 weeks before Christmas, so I escape the run-out-at-the-last-minute problems. 7 - Everyone else has great ideas about the meal. I'll try some of those next year! All of this helps to give my family a less-stress (working on stress free) holiday and puts us in a better Christmas spirit because we're not running around like crazy folks with last minute things.

Heater will NOT engage in normal no matter what. I often use wrinkle free for clothes, husband's dress shirts, sometimes towels. This will not allow a max spin though. I use extra white for white sheets/towels/socks. Usually with extra warm or hot temp and sometimes extended and/or prewash. I have used custom for kids' clothes warm with a max spin speed. I have used express for bathing suits/towels after a day of swimming. A little Vaska on express and everything is fresh for the next day. These items don't really need to be washed daily so express is great (30 minutes). I have used delicates/hand wash for ... well delicate items. This setting works great. More soaking less tumbling. I have used woolens for wool sweaters also great. I LOVE the comforter setting. It will "vent" the item(s) first - wet them thoroughly before it adds the detergent. Very smart. I almost always use the sensitive setting which uses a higher spin speed between wash and rinse and uses an extra rinse. I don't like too much residual detergent smell (if possible). I've used clean machine. I used table linens a few times for table cloths - not really sure what makes that setting good for them. They turned out just fine. The only program I was not thrilled with was the dress shirts one. It only does a medium spin and left the shirts quite wet. I prefer wrinkle free for them (but that's me). I have used prewash and extended. If items are noticeably dirty I use a prewash. I have used extended if I think they need a little longer tumbling. The more agitation the better the wash. Shorter cycles are not the answer for clean items. Gosh ... have fun and keep us posted on how it's going.

I have only Blue Mouse Ears,and Frosted Mouse Ears,and really don't plan on any more. They get lost in my "land of the giants"! Right now my BME and FME are planted under a tree hosta named Lakeside Ripples! Nuff said! Phil

Hi Don,

You can scratch my name from your list and change it to Zilis 2011. He registered the name Ruffled Mouse Ears, which is okay with me because I had only tentatively named that one, and I decided not to introduce it anyway because I didn't like it so much after it grew up. Funny thing is, that plant appears to be identical to Church Mouse and Dancing Mouse and is probably the same sport that Zilis registered, based on the size, so I think those 3 plants could all end up about the same if they all get the same size. Heck, I still might divide up the clump I have though, because it is interesting, but I had decided it wasn't worth pursuing myself.

I did send in the registration for a different BME sport this year though, but that's another story ;)

We, HostaBevie and me, have a plant in our garden having your name on it's label.

It's winter, and we're snow-covered now, but I distinctly remember it and my wife Bevie said it came from you, probably a few or at least one decade ago.

As I recall, it had something about 'Dutchman' in the name as well.

Does that ring a bell, please?

I'm an awful specifics retentive lunatic, and despise anything in our gardens that has questions about who, what, when, where, why and all that jazz, and am thinking and hoping that seeing your name here will help me do a better documentation of the plant that seems to be attached to you.

I'm the same way with the Nash plants she has here, so I hope you can and will 'work with me' to help us keep HostaHistory alive.

Ummm, I'm thinking the plant label is something along the lines of 'DigginJohnDutchman' . . .

Just a hostaholic's hubby trying to git the Hosta Hills database updated and worthwhile, and a history buff.

Love to know the history of hostadom, HH. A worthy objective.

I thought I'd escaped the mouse craze, but checking that list above, I realize that I have three of them:
Pure Heart
Itty Bitty
Snow Mouse

The only one I realized was a Mouse when I got it, was Snow Mouse. It is a cute little thing. Next year, I might put them all three in one pot. Three blind mice.

HH. Wow!! that was some time ago!! Bevie was the one from the Hosta Forum that suggested naming my introduction in a contest. With "Dutch" somewhere in the name. The name I choose was "Double Dutch". I never regestered "Double Dutch" it was a sport from Hyacythina. There also is mention in Mark Zilis Hostapedia. Also there is a picture of a young "Double Dutch" in the Hosta Library. Glad I could help you with your data .

Your post is my favorite Christmas present this year, thank you! I showed the post to Bevie and she's very happy and thankful too.

It doesn't surprise me that the plant's name is related to a contest, as she's big into that. Hosta 'Lakeside Hoola Hoop' is another one that is named because of her involvement in such contests.

So now I can update our labels and database with the name Hosta 'Double Dutch' and even more enjoy the history, thanks so much again.
