Now that the season of bold flowers that took center stage seems to be behind us and SOME shrubs/trees are heavy with berries/fruit, I think it would be interesting to hear/see what is abundant in your yard. I myself am perplexed by the over abundance of berries/fruit on some things and noticeable absence on others. This certainly has been an unusual year in the garden for many of us primarily thanks to unusual weather patterns, for some the warm winter was followed by summers drought, others in New England had too much summer rain. Although these extremes may be the answer to the inconsistent berry/fruit production I am guessing it is only one piece to a puzzle that we as gardeners will need to explore in the future. kt

ha, kt- just yesterday ,i was frowning at my whimpy (o.k. it's only been in a year but i still bet i haven't placed it in enough sunlight) tea viburnum. your photo gives me hope. th you.

I started aralia racemosa from seeds from the NEWFS 2 winters ago. I believe William Cullina calls it an underused native perennial. The foliage is nice, size still not clear, never noticed the bloom, but the berries are really pretty.

Amazing, just simply amazing, it seems like everyone on here has extremely beautiful lawns. I am a relatively new home owner with Bermuda grass, we bought our house about two years ago in a new development area. I had sod put down in November of 05 and have been battling to keep the grass alive. Last summer I think I had probably the worst lawn. Over the winter I took a Home Depot Garden person's advice and planted Rye grass to "help the lawn develop roots, so that the Bermuda in the spring/summer can come back in much stronger". I am getting a little worried cause lately we have been having a lot of rain lately and I have been attempting to mow twice a week, but I am noticing in the back my lawn is looking really nice, but I am not sure what to do to prepare the lawn for bringing the bermuda back up. I just yesterday fertilized with Scotts Turfgaurd for Southern lawns and was thinking about aerating and then reseeding with more Bermuda in a couple of weeks. My question for y'all would probably be; 1. Am I doing this right? with the wait a couple of weeks and then aerate and reseed? 2. I notice that a lot of people are talking about reel mowers, and my yard is probably only about 3 or 4,000 sq ft, so would a manual reel mower do better than my regular lawn mower? 3. From what I have read on this forum every body is saying to cut Bermuda down to 1" or so, but everybody at Home Depot/Lowes is telling me to keep cutting my grass at the highest setting on my lawn mower. 4. Should I consider Tru Green or Scotts for help with the lawn, or is this something I can do without having to call them 5. Also how do I prepare my lawn for extended absence by me, I am in the military so occasionaly I have to deploy for a few months here and there, I recently returned about three weeks ago and found my yard really tall with grass, that I promptly cut and then started maintaing a twice a week cut. But hopefully I shouldn't be going anywhere for this summer so I am wanting to focus on my yard. Well, thank you all for your photos and words on this page so far, I believe they are really inspiring me to try and do everything I can to attempt to get a lawn as nice as what I am seeing in this forum. hi everyone, i too received a great box of plants from carol. i don't have the list in front of me, but a wonderful assortment of daylilies, asitatic lillies, huechera and others. i apologize carol, i don't have the list at all handy. i love everything - will do my best to get it all in the ground this week coming - our weather isn't supposed to be the best, but at least the ground is still soft. vina, i absolutely apologize for being so late. your box will go out before the end of this month, i promise. everyone has received some great things. once the last two receive, we can wrap this up. i feel awful being so late, but seems like everyone got caught up in time issues. better late than never, i suppose. I had lights put in cach closet so they come on when the door is opened and off when closed. I love this feature; no more hunting in a dark closet. Used T5 slim flourescest light fixtures. I also have drawers on all the bottom kitchen cabinets. Makes those dark recesses in the back go away. Did in floor hot water heat which I love. No more drafty forced air. Put a shower valve that controls a hose spigot inside the garage so we can wash the car on the outside concrete pad in the winter. Full extension glides on the kitchen drawers and the soft close on the drawers and the cabinet doors. We are at 5000 ft in northern Wyoming so we did tripple pane casement windows and 2x6 walls with foam insulation on the exteriior wall. I would do double hung windows if I had to do it again becasue the flies like to roost between the inside screen and the window pane. Have at least R50 in the ceiling that's blown in fiberglass. The new stuff that doesn't itch. I also agree with putting plenty of outside spigots and outside electrical plugs. Wish I had more.

I was not familiar with Henri Nouwen, so I 'Googled' him and found more information than I wanted to know--at this time, anyway. The titles of many of his books are enough to make one want to read them. As to today's quotes, #3--"How much longer . . . and #9--"Did I offer peace, today? . . . get my attention. The remainder of #3 more than the opening words; it reminds me of a line from a novel-- "If I woke up, this morning, it's b/c God has something for me to do, today", and for me, #9's questions are the embodiment of #3. All of the quotes are "words to live by".

Wow that is some viburnum! Many of mine have berries, but not like that - the birds have been at some of them, but I just don't think mine had (ever had) that kind of crop.

Mayalena, I've never seen aralia before. Interesting!

I have more crabapples than I've had in past years, and also see some berries on winterberry holly, asparagus, euonymous 'Manhattan' and Nandina.

My favorite "fruits" at the moment -

Styrax japonicus looked like an understated Christmas tree, covered with hanging white berries (wish I'd gotten a better pic):

My big old winterberry is covered with berries as usual, and all the suckers are fruiting also (I let them grow to fill in the lopsided old structure).

Most of the cotoneasters have berries; except for branches in shade.

Blue Maid holly (Ilex meserveae) has berries as usual, and American Holly "Goldie", has some berries. Not many, but the most it's ever had. These should be yellow when they develop further.

And the pokeberries are spectacular, although past their prime.

Some of the lily of the valley have berries.

Prunus serotina (wild black cherry) still have fruit.

Native Virginia rose (Rosa virginiana) is covered with hips. The rugosas would have more hips but I deadheaded them most of the season.

What a great plant (woodland ground cover?) the color of the berries is wonderful.

One look at your photo's and I am cancelling plans for this afternoon and heading off to the nursery instead. Your Styrax and leatherleaf viburnum are outstanding, and although your longstalk holly looks tempting I know better than to try again. My butt ugly holly is so large that it is beyond my ability to shovel prune but in keeping with it's ugly nature last week without ever turning brown or showing and insect damage it dropped two thirds of it's leaves...I am now considering a blow torch.
