OT: Credit Card Scan?

Hi fellow hosta fans, This is OT but important. I recently discovered that my CC# has been compromised and it probably happened somewhere I used it on-line. I have two bad charges on my bill, made on Oct 4 and 14. I check my account regularly on-line which is how I know already.

I would HATE to think that one of our hosta sellers might be leaking or selling numbers, but I have to ask. Have any of you had bogus charges on your cards lately? Especially from a tooth whitening company or some kind of herbal/natural/alternative medicine company? If so, would you let me know at chrisengleman@comcast.net

I hope no one else here has been scammed, but if you have maybe we can put our heads together to figure something out.

On MSNBC Consumerman there was reported that these tooth whitening, berry, etc. internet and Email outfits regularly deduct $60-88 $/ month for something you did not order after you give them your CC # for $5 shipping a free sample to you. Many of those are under investigation now.

I would not question nurseries, they have a legitimate business at a fixed address to maintain. Perhaps an Ebay seller is involved?

I recently noticed some payments charged on my debit card that I traced to a magazine subscription company. However, when I called the company and gave them my address they said that they didn't have anything for that address. I NEVER use my debit card for transactions like this, so I called my bank to get my debit card number cancelled. Then I remembered a magazine subscription that I have been paying for for my daughter, and looked on the company's website using my daughter's address, and sure enough, there were about 4 new subscriptions for magazines going to her address. And the prices were much higher than if you subscribed directly. I called my daughter, and she told me that she thought that she was getting free subscriptions - that was the come on. She didn't read the teeny tiny print that said that if she did not act that the subscriptions would automatically renew, and that the original card charged (which was apparently my debit card) would be charged. That's not even the card that I am currently using to pay for the magazine that I initially subscribed to for her. What really maddened me is that the mag. sub. company would not give me any information about the charges until I came up with the address that they were going to. I had a bunch of credit cards opened in my name some years ago. I had rental property and had a Centruy 21 agent manage it for me. Apparently, since the mortgage statement went to that office, so did a bunch of those free offers for credit cards. The receptionist opened the accounts got the cards, and just kept paying the minimum payments on the cards. It went on for over a year and was only discovered when she went away on her honeymoon and my agent started opening the mail with my name on it--a bunch of Visa bills with over $20,000 total charges! This girl had charged her whole wedding and honeymoon in my name! The hardest part was cancelling the cards--when I called Visa they wouldn't believe I was me because the girl had given them _her_ mother's maiden name, information of course that I could not supply! It was pretty stupid, really, she thought she would never be caught, said she every intention of paying off the cards eventually. Stupid criminal. Stupid credit card companies. We all paid for that one. And yes, I do check my credit report now!

Oakley: Was it a debit card? I wonder if debit cards have tighter rules. But then again, my ATM won't dispense more than a few hundred at a time. I'm sure the bank would say they don't want big spenders emptying them out and keeping other patrons from getting money. BLFenton: I get your point about building a credit record. But people can -- and do -- overdraft their accounts. Some people are responsible using them; others try to game the system. Banks have built-in mechanisms that allow them to permit the overdraft and then charge the user high fees to cover it. Some users don't even notice the charge part in their card agreement. (How can they not know they don't have enough funds to cover a purchase? One situation: similar to writing a check and thinking the bank has deposited your paycheck already when really it's on hold and hasn't 100% cleared.) Bank of America, not too long ago, settled a case about debit-card overdraft fees for $400million. Card issuers need to make money somehow on these debit cards, which are typically given to you for free with your bank account. Credit-card issuers, at least, can charge an annual fee. That's why Bank of America tried to start that $5 debit card fee.

I got a call from my CC security dept a couple of weeks ago regarding some charges. I had made them all. Then they called back two days later. I had made more purchases so I was about to be annoyed if I was going to have to talk to them everytime I use the darn thing. This time there was a charge I did not recognize. Turns out it was from Bulgaria... Hmm, I just have not travelled that far afield lately. I killed the card and now have two new ones - 1 for all my automatic bill payments and 1 for everything else. I pay them in full every month, but I don't want the hassle of re-doing my auto bill paying again and I don't want payments coming directly out of my checking.

All transactions on ebay go through paypal. Vendors don't see your cc's numbers.

Oh, dear, Christine! I'm sorry to hear about what's happening to you with your CC!
Life is getting really nasty isn't with all the crooks out there taking advantage so easily as it seems.

BTW--I would really advise you NOT to post your email on a public forum, for all to see.
There are also spyware type things that search the web for addresses as you've provided.
Having it 'cloaked' through your 'My Page' is the best way to go, so that if anyone emails you
that you don't mind having your address, you can simply reply to them when they go through GW! :o)

I hope you are able to get those charges removed!!!

I had my cc # stolen a few years ago from a major department store in Indiana. When they called to ask me if I had been to Paducah KY. lately, and I told them that I hadn't, they closed in on it and prosecuted the culprit. How many African American women do you know of with the first name of Dennis? Kinda seemed like an inside job to me but out here in the woods there isn't any crime except the ones committed by the tom cats in the spring.So I am not an expert by any means.

Sorry to be so late in answering. I figured when I posted that it wasn't anyone to do with hostas, I was just so bummed by the whole thing and what I have to go through now.

I canceled my card right away and then had to got to the bank to file notarized fraud complaints. I know now it was from that face stuff that I stupidly fell for. I know better! I have been on the internet long enough to know better and I have never done anything like that before.

I'm afraid I am going to plead anxiety over turning 60 a few weeks ago! My mind was not functioning properly. ; )

It can happen to anyone that has/uses a CC.
I have had two occurrences in recent years, one at a local national brand self-service station, where an employee pulled the CC # from the computer and sold it for International LD calls. CC company called when the charges hit $700, because I had never used the card for that purpose. I hope he is still in prison! But that's doubtful.
Second case was for numerous shipping charges from the gigantic book/everything else under the sun seller. Stock excuse; They blamed a computer error. Computers aren't crooks, people are!
BTW, it can happen on ebay also. Several years ago, after I had placed an order, someone hijacked my account and changed the shipping address. Fortunately, the seller emailed me before shipping, to confirm the address.
The idiots at ebay refused to do anything and when I managed to correct the account, I received a scathing email from ebay accusing me of hijacking the account! You can rest assured, I will never do business there again. A big plus; I don't have to clean out the cookie-jar, to remove all of the Spyware I picked up everytime I loaded their website!
