Your just gettin' your feet wet is all! I am not buying now anymore, but I have 1 to plant, and I will do it, tomorrow. If this years' frenzy has succumbed you and you still have potted plants, stop buying. Plant them at first opportunity. Hostas are easy....unless you leave them to rot in a pot over winter. Put them into the ground, where they belong.
I have gone from 3 or 4 cultivars in 1996 to over 550 now.
Hostas, if well grown, are gorgeous additions to your landscape. There's others' here that have way more than I do. It becomes an obsession, sometimes an addiction, and there's nothing like seeing a Hosta that wouldn't grow for you in someone else's garden that makes you think...I bet it would grow better if......
So, you buy it again.

Just buy a 'Cherry Berry', it'll keep you busy for years. LOL

What is the info on a Cherry Berry? Is it not a very good hosta? I keep hearing people refrence to that one.
I bought one at the end of the season, I have kept it in a pot to keep a eye on it, should I go ahead and put it in the ground?
I usually don't like the skinnier leafed hosta, but this one just shouted at me to buy it, maybe I should stick with my large leafed ones?

I don't have any trouble with Cherry Berry here. I know alot of folks do, but mine only gets about 1 hour of sun a day, otherwise it's in shade. I've had it for years.

Lets see.....I think you've got it bad.....I can relate....have collected since 2000 and only bought 10 to 15 hosta each year...this year - went from 63 to 104...Ouch!

I have a suggestion that might help with your obsession...Don't visit the hosta forums online...because we're all enablers here....unless you don't want a cure...then keep reading all winter and be prepared to start hunting for the hosta on your looooong wish list next year too. lol

Ive officialy run out of room !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what am i going to do ???? Im thinkin about ripping out the bed in front of my house , mostly basic shrubs, with some very large kwanzan cherry blossoms that were trimmed this spring so theres about 4 hours of sun . cant wait for spring.

The rest of my lawn in the backyard is going to go byebye next Spring. More trees and mulch paths and MORE HOSTA!

I don't really agree with the suggestion that Hostas belong in the ground. A hosta is a gorgeous plant to pot. I have 20 different species potted and I will add some more next year.

Hosta collectors are obsessive compulsive given to fits of unrealistic euphoria and depths of unreasonable depression. That is why daylily collectors make fun of us.

The unrealistic euphoria is, of course when we get a new one.

The unreasonable depression is when we get our bank statement.

I seriously offer that it doesn't matter which ones or how many if we don't grow them well. Include the soil forum in your browsing; hosta roots are the only things that lead to healthy attractive plants!

I've purchased 266 hostas since June 2005. Lost 10 due to winter heave/disease. Can't wait until Spring.

The nature of the disease is the spiraling decline in formerly typical interests/responsbilities and general sloppiness in simple tasks, such as cooking meals and actually sitting down somewhere to eat them, picking up 'stuff'-- at least the biggest chunks -- around the inside of the home (which becomes more and more unfamiliar ambient space) so that the cleaning lady can clean, rushing through critical tasks such as bathing, dressing oneself, speaking to people when spoken to, and the worst-case scenario which is the inevitable breakdown of any semblance of a relationship with anyone who isn't an enabler. You will have clear indications of the 'onset' when you rip out rosebushes, daylilies, or anything else you thought you loved because there's never enough dirt in your life. The final stages: incontinence because the trip to the bathroom is postponed ad infinitum. Oh yes, and of course, drooling over forum pics.

About the incontence.....Well, I haven't gotten there yet, but only because I got myself trained while gardening and my bladder is now about the size of a Winnebago's water tank.

A cute little outhouse would be a nice Christmas gift. Instead of the outhouse door having a cresent moon on it, my door could have a hosta leaf.

Ah, you guys are funny! i've started with hostas in 2000. i'm up to 65 hostas. as much as i love them, i can't remember all their names. so each morning i put myself thru the test with glee. i love them so much as i am not a gardener, but these plants thrive! This past august i went to my first silent hosta auction and met some real live hosta lovers - great fun. i was one of the bigger buyers..spent over $200.00. This well surpassed my budget for the year! now all i have to learn is propagation...i'd love nothing more than naming my own hosta. Has anyone named a hosta in this forum?

Bel, Just a note that about 5-6 years ago forum members here had suggested names for one of my hostas that I had sent to members and came up with the name of "Double Dutch" keeping a little of my Dutch heritage in the name. This year I've finally got it to be tissue cultured and looking forward to the new adventure. Others new plants I have I've just come up with my own names like "Diggers Gold" for yes, a gold lance shaped leaf hosta. The Hosta Library has a picture of a young Double Dutch and this picture is of my stock plant
