How about evergreen shrubs & flowering shrubs?

I've seen Variegated Barberry everywhere, which I love, especially for it new red speckled shoots... but I've caught myself just buying flowering perrenials and if I keep that up I will have a bare garden come Winter!

I have a large backyard that I will have to work over in pieces... most of it is full sun, with the exception of a North facing garage wall. The house was a rental for 5 years so the backyard is pretty overgrown with just Oregon grape and Raspberries on one side... the back fence overgrown with a few small fruit trees and a lot of foilage coming over from the forrested trail that sits behind us. Everything is along the fence line, so I hope to bring things in a little and create areas of interest with an English Garden feel.

I would love any suggestions with a mix of burgundy foilage, Fall/Winter flowering? shrubs and Winter greenery.... anyone have some favorites they could recommend? I am sorta overwhelmed by this, to be honest!

Thanks SO much!!

Ellen
