Winter Storm Watch Issued for 28 OK Counties

The NWS has issued a Winter Storm Watch for 28 counties in Oklahoma, generally NW OK through parts of central OK, and for some counties in the adjoining states.

Included in the watch area are many cities where we have Garden Web members including Anardako, Buffalo, Alva, Chickasha, Elk City, Norman, OKC, El Reno, Stillwater, Enid and Kingfisher.

The watch is in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday morning.

I've linked the watch below.

If you're in the watch area, be sure to cover up any tender vegetation. At this time of the year, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

You are my favorite weather person. I don't even have to worry about catching the 6 or 10 news. I just log on to the Oklahoma Gardening forum! Way more fun.....

But I want to know we can depend on you through the RAIN/HAIL/TORNADO season?! (:>

I guess I do watch the weather pretty carefully, but it sure has saved my garden a few times because I covered up plants when hail was approaching or whatever. Weather is such a huge part of gardening and farming and ranching.

Yes, you can count on me in Tstorm and tornado weather. I always try to post severe weather info assuming I'm not out in the garden all day long and unaware it is developing.

And, speaking of developing, they've now added hail and snow to our forecast here in Love County. Hopefully it is a slim chance, but I'll be out covering up everything tomorrow 'just in case'.

Diane, That's true, and I'll keep posting the warnings whenever I come inside and check the weather and see them. Hopefully Larry and Busy1 have better weather radio signals than you had when you lived in LeFlore County. I thought of your old place and the issues with the NOAA alert radios not working a few weeks ago. We were at a big wildfire in NW Love County, near the Orr community, and we were so far out in the boonies that radio communications with the county dispatcher were sketchy to non-existent, as was cell phone service. Of course, all of us who were there could communicate with one another via the emergency radios, but we couldn't communicate with anyone else in the county via radio or with anyone at all via cell phone. (If you climbed a high hill, you had a chance of being able to pick up at least part of a radio dispatch from the dispatcher.) It reminded me of your NOAA weather radio issues. I had noticed the same problem last fall when we were at a fundraiser for the Orr VFD....once we reached a certain distance west of Marietta, neither radios nor cell phones worked any more. It was just peculiar. You get used to having the ability to communicate with someone 24/7 and then suddenly you're in an area where that doesn't exist. With the fire I previously mentioned, I had told Tim and Chris, who both were at work in Dallas, via text message that we were en route to a big fire west of town, so it drove them crazy for a couple of hours that they couldn't communicate with me to find out what was going on. I had a few text messages from them when I returned to civilization. It is easy to forget it now, but when we moved here in mid-winter of 1999, there was no cell phone service in our part of the county and it would be about 5 more years before we had reliable cell phone service at our house. For a while, we had cell phone service as close as the street in front of our house, so if you wanted to make a phone call you had to walk a few hunded feet down the driveway to the roadway. Then, later on, the cell signal reached our front porch and living room, but nowhere else. Now, we've hit the big time, and have cell phone service on all parts of our property...and it only took 11 or 12 years for it to improve to that point! Today that line of storms is wreaking havoc across the south and southeast. I think we're lucky here that they started so far east and moved on before they could cause much damage. Some areas in Texas a bit east/southeast of our house had golfball-sized hall when these storms kicked up, and one small tornado damaged a barn. We are fine. We had some storms on the radar that were SW of us in TX and looking a little scary so we put deer netting over hoops over the tomato and onion beds for hail protection. I don't know how much hail the storms produced, but once when I was checking the radar I saw what looked like a hail core. We could see horrible clouds slightly south of us and could hear thunder on and off for 2 hours, but so far the storms have stated south of the Red River. Our worst weather here, in terms of severity, almost always comes at us from our SW. As I was watching the radar, stopping to check it about every 15 minutes, it looked like we had a tall wall(The Great Wall of Oklahoma?) at the Red River that was making storms just melt away. I'm okay with that! : ) Larry, Thanks. I hope y'all are okay tonight. I got in such a habit of posting these when Diane lived in LeFlore County and the hills around her kept her family's weather radio from receiving the warnings. Now, I just think that it is a good idea to post them in case someone else is outside like I was, and comes inside and sees the Tornado Warning and says "Oh, crap, I didn't know this was happening". Actually my first clue that a watch had been issued was a text message from our county's Emergency Mgmt Director. He's really good about sending us the weather watch and warning news as soon as he gets that info himself. Dr. Forbes has some TorCon numbers posted for our region for later in the week, and I'll be watching those as the most serious weather days approach. Dawn

Diane I can just visualize you standing out in the garden, shaking your fists toward the sky, and saying, "As God is my witness, I'll never go hungry again!"

Last nites news, OKC supposed to get between 6 and 12 inches of snow. It is supposed to snow ALL day! Yikes!

My sugar snaps are up and I guess they will stay inside til Sunday at least, and I will start to harden them off.

The nice thing about snow this time of year is that it will not stay around long. Sunday is supposed to be in high 40s to low 50s and then a big warm up again.

Just checked all the latest predictions. We have a Winter weather advisory and a Hazardous weather warning. One is saying 1-3 inches total. Last night they were saying 2-4. The other is saying 2-5 inches. Hope it is on the light side. The wind has already changed direction. Blew all day yesterday from the SW and now the NW this morning. It is 39 this morning. One is saying 34 for a high so guess temps will be dropping all day. Worries me some with all the predictions of heavy amounts around us. Really never saw anything out of the animals yesterday. But then again I stayed busy on the greenhouse most of the day. Thinking I could go do my shopping and also plant seeds this weekend while it is miserable. So hopefully traveling won't be too bad. They have both dropped temps quite a bit from yesterday. We may get down to 18 now. Hope everyone can stay warm and safe. Jay

Man, they are saying 6-10 inches. Crap. I am covering them up this afternoon, hopefully (and this is maybe the first time I have said this) every thing is still seeds so they maybe ok.

thankfully I have nothing more out yet. Does anyone start carrot and radishes by seed?

Normally no, but I'll explain.

Most radishes, unless you're growing the huge winter radishes, sprout very quickly and grow and mature in about 25 to 35 days, so there's no reason to start them early.

Carrots can be started inside, but they get really long roots in just a matter of a few days, so you have to transplant them into the ground almost as soon as foliage appears, and carrots don't like being transplanted. If you start carrots indoors, the best way is to use the cardboard tubes from toilet paper or paper towel rolls (cut those into thirds). Line them up in a flat, fill with soil, moisten the soil, plant the seeds shallowly and then water lightly to ensure good soil-to-seed contact. As soon as the foliage is up, transplant the cardboard tubes into the ground. The tubes will decompose and the carrots should grow just fine.

Direct-seeding usually works fine for carrots, but starting them inside in cardboard tubes is a method sometimes used to get carrots off to an early start, particularly in areas where the soil is so heavy and dense that the carrots have a hard time breaking through the soil surface or in areas that suffer through non-stop heavy spring rains that can wash away the carrot seed before it sprouts.

I start many, many veggies inside and transplant out when the conditions are right, but I've only started carrots inside once or twice and thought it was more work than it was worth.
