Knockout roses

Has anyone tried these? Are they own rooted? Is it legal to propagate them from cuttings for your own use?

I have some Rose double knockouts which are doing wonderful. I purchased half them from Sanders Nursery on Southeast Broken Arrow, OK and half from Colebrooks Nursery in West Tulsa. Mine are planted on an 18 inch tall berm I installed, several years ago, using sandy loam top soil

I purchased them in 3 gallon pots, and did not notice if the they had been grafted or not.

As far as I have heard it is legal to propagate by taking cuttings off of such plants if the mother plant is one which has been purchased by the same person who is taking the cutting for their own personal use. I am by no means an expert at giving legal advice though, and some others might give different advice.

Any plant you have purchased that doesn't have a label prohibiting propagation is fine to take cuttings off of. That covers about anything and everything on the market today.

If it does have a label "prohibiting reproduction," it's illegal no matter what reason you may have. That plant can only be reproduced by the original grower or growers contracted by the original grower. It's a violation of federal law and not worth the hassle.

Right, don't fertilize until they have recovered and have put out plenty of leaves. Bloom Buster is the wrong kind of fertilizer--regular Miracle Gro or Miracle Gro for Roses is fine, or any reasonably balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10 or 18-6-12. Watering correctly is the most important thing. Keep a 2" mulch of leaves or bark around the roses. When the soil under the mulch feels dry-ish, water thoroughly with 2-3 gallons for small plants or 5 gallons for larger, plus or minus for extremely hot or very mild, cloudy weather. Usually once a week is fine. For new plants, I divide the ration in half and water twice a week.

If a rose looked like that in my garden, it would almost certainly be an issue with the potting mix. Some mixes become a dense airless soggy mass that roses don’t like. Others might dry out too much in my climate (but the plant would look different than what yours looks like). Or the pH might be off, which can happen in a wet airless mix. Putting in more drainage holes can help a little but if it is a poor quality mix, but it won’t help enough. Putting fertilizer on a newly planted rose is considered problematic as well, since it could be too strong for the young roots and burn them. Speaking of which, so will softened water. If that were my plant, I would take the rose out of the pot and check the mix quality. Just digging a little on the side is not adequate, you need to see what the mix looks like all the way down. If the mix is poor, then get entirely fresh high quality potting mix, (maybe someone from Florida can give you some suggestions, but something like MiracleGro moisture control is my guess for your hot humid climate). You would need to remove as much of the old stuff as possible and repot into fresh. You don’t need to wash the roots. Looking at your rose, I would expect that there aren’t many living roots anyway. In your climate you could do it even in this season.

spray for black spot and mildew .... with appropriate stuff ... this will not heal the leaves.. when you water .. water the soil.. do not wet the leaves... wet leaves at night cause mildews and black spot.. if you have lawn irrigation.. make sure it does not hit your roses... they should be rather resistant.. but that doesnt mean they will never get problems.. apparently this was a bad year... full fall cleanup .. spray late in fall... so they go into dormancy 'clean'.. and you probably will not have the same problem next season.. but if you do.. and you dont want to spray.. just get rid of them.. ken

It is my understanding that Knockout roses are own-root roses and not grafted.

And, the Knockout roses are PPAF, which means propagation is prohibited as Randy pointed out. I believe plant patents are legally enforceable for 20 years. And, even after the patent expires (at which time I guess you can legally propagate the plant), the company can extend its' trademark on the name itself, so even if you propagate the plant, you can't use the trademarked name. Propagation of patented varieties is and always has been a topic of MUCH heated discussion there.

Very true. Never propagate patented, PPAF plants and shrubs with the intent to sell or give the newly grown items to others. Also never try to avoid being caught for doing so by labeling the newly grown items with a different name. For certain, I know of nothing right or legal about such activity.
