Found a new source for plants and gardening supplies

Yesterday I got up early and drove into town (Edmond), looking forward to checking out the farmer's market and picking up some tomato plants. I have some started, but there are others I've been reading about here that I couldn't find seeds for. Well, the farmer's market wasn't open and one of the women I met in the parking lot said it won't open till late April, which is surprising. So I drove down the street to the Farmers Grain Co. and they had quite a few plants and the prices seemed very reasonable. All of their stuff comes from the Red Dirt Nursery it looks like. Anyway, I was thrilled to find a Black Cherry and an Early Girl, and they were only $1.59 each. I also got a Fernleaf dill plant, which I've been looking for for ages. I think I will go back and pick up a Juliet tomato, and a few peppers that I don't have seeds for. They had some really healthy strawberries, $1.59 each or $18 for a flat of 12, but I'm concerned that it might be too late to plant them now. What do you all think?

I noticed they also had Nature Made cotton burr compost, big bales of peat, and some mulches, including cedar. They were pretty busy so I didn't ask for prices but I'm going to check next time. I may have found my new source for gardening supplies - certainly much more relaxing shopping there than the big box stores, and prices were better and plants looked better. And they had different varieties, which I recognized as being the ones you all refer to often. I've noticed that the big box stores all seem to carry the same few varieties, and often they are not what you all recommend.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that in case it is helpeful for anyone here. Also, if you know of other good places like this, I'd love to hear about them. I always like to support the small, local businesses if I can.

Here are some plants I bought this weekend because my starts wont be ready in time because of neglect and abuse. There are 28 of them in the aluminum pans that I paid 25 to 38 cents each. My starts in the black tray look terrible.

I got them at Atwoods and a local nursery.

Wowee. If only my tomato seedlings were that big. I hope mine can mature before the alleged heat wave.

Yep, eyes, it's good stuff! It lasts pretty much year round for us zone 8ish people! I have found that, though the rainbow is very pretty, it seems a little tougher than the gold or green. I use the gold and green as I would spinach (which I have NEVER had any luck with), as wraps and I ALWAYS chop it up and put it in soup! Even vege haters just see these little strips of green and don't think much of them and they get all these vege goodies! HAA!!!! Fooled them! Chard ON!!!!!! NT

Lions Tails are cool. Last spring a friend dropped by with a dozen Leonotis nepetefolia seedlings (spelling uncertain) in a small pot. They have now grown 10 feet tall and have been in bloom since about the 3rd week in June - best of all they receive constant hummingbird traffic. Too bad that garden is closer to you, those gardeners are probably people worth getting to know.

First picture looks like a bulb, maybe a lily. Wait and see how it develops. Second picture looks like tulip foliage. Third and fourth pictures are too small to identify, for me. Just watch them and see what they do. Post some pictures after they grow some.

The alleged heat wave is already here. Eighty-something degrees is not normal for March. Not, not, not. I am starting to dread this summer if we keep staying hotter than usual. (sigh) This spring is turning into a rerun of last spring, minus the fires. We do not need any sort of rerun of last year in any shape, form or fashion.

All the purchased tomato plants I put into large containers in February are blooming and setting fruit, and some of the cherry ones have fruit that is almost full-sized. The home-grown plants are smaller, but the 53 that are in the ground are growing at a pretty good rate and starting to bloom. I hope they hurry, hurry, hurry to beat the heat.

I started putting tomato plants into the ground a full month before the OSU-recommended transplanting date, and I am starting to worry that even that won't be enough to offset this early heat.

Wow - I agree! Those are some big tomato plants. Sounds like you got an excellent deal on them too. I wish we had an Atwoods closer to us.

I just put the two tomato plants I got yesterday into the ground tonight. I hope there's time to get something from them. I find myself dreading summer too...

Red Dirt Nursery is a wholesaler in Guthrie, so you can feel good about buying local! I broke down and went to Lowes today for some tomatoes and peppers, since I haven't started a darn thing.

Shelley, the tomatoes came from M&M nursery at Cameron OK.. It is near the Arkansas/Oklahoma line south of Ft. Smith. The large plants are Park's Whopper, also there are 4 Mountain Fresh and 6 Big Beef. M&M is my #1 choice to buy plants. They are smallish and don't have the verity that the larger places have, but their quality is hard to beat. The peppers came from Atwoods in Ft. Smith, they often have the best prices around, but if you don't buy early the plants may suffer from neglect.

I started peppers and tomatoes both but have been running so much looking after sick folks that my plants have suffered.
