Leaf-mold for next years mulch?

hostaLes

I've read about it but I don't know anyone who has done it. In a Hosta garden, is it a good idea to use this years chopped leaves next spring as mulch over the bare earth between plants?

If the leaves are finely chopped is there a greater chance of giving the slimy-ones a place to hide when they are not eating my hostas?

If leaf-mold is in a thick layer, since the pieces will tend to lay flat will they tend to choke off oxygen-transfer between air and soil?

All good information will be a big help, all not so good information is better than none and will be fun to read, and God help any of us who are convinced we know the difference.
