Here's the spring/summer vegetable varieties I'm growing in 2009. There's no tomatoes on this list because I posted them on a separate thread.

Okay, here's my list! As you can see it's a real mix of veggies, herbs, and annual and perennial flowers. :-) (BTW - the formatting of posts sure leaves a lot to be desired in terms of flexibility and formatting it the way you want to! Oh well, hopefully it's legible.)

How do you transition from winter to spring summer veggies?

Trish - last things first. Blueberries. Plant lots and lots of blueberries. They grow well here. They handle full sun to part sun. They give lots of fruit compared to many other garden staples (at least for me). My only complaint is that there is no way to have them all year. I grow Garden Peas, Snow Peas, and Sugar Snap Peas in the part of the garden where I'm gonna plant Tomatoes and Peppers. I start the Peas in January (didn't this year due to the drought) after soaking them. I plant them in groups of 4-6 about 2 feet apart in rows that are 3 feet apart. My garden is covered with a plastic mulch with holes about the size of a paper plate every two feet in rows about 3 feet apart. I grow everything in these holes. The ground below gets worked up real well in the winter, it isn't level so when it rains or I water the water collects in the low spots an finds its way to the plants. Anyway - I put the large tomato cages over each mound of planted peas right after I plant. The peas emerge about now and climb up the cages. I start tomato and pepper seeds inside the house around now, they will be ready to plant outside in late April or early May. I plant them on the sunny side of the Pea cages. The Peas are ready for harvest in June. By that time I am working the pea vines over to one side to make room for the tomatoes. I cut the pea vines off at the ground and either un-weave them from the cages or I just leave them there to wither. I snip the pea clusters from the tips to harvest. The peas put nitrogen in the soil which helps the tomatoes and peppers and the peas tend to get all the attention of the aphids (which love nitrogen and therefore love pea plants). Sometimes the weather warms early and screws up this delicate dance and then I have to sacrifice some of the weaker pea vines to make room for the 'maters and peppers. I grow lettuce, arugula and spinach in simple cinder block cold frames with removable plastic lids sorta in the center of my veggie garden. By May the cold frame tops have been retired to the shed and the lettuce is at its peak. When the lettuce is done I plant greenbeans in the same space. There is a bit of overlap with the lettuce in rows and the beans in between them (but it takes a while for the beans to get up and going). All other crops are just planted in the garden, through the holes in the plastic. Once the weather heats up I spread mulch (leaves or old straw) on the plastic to keep it cool. I only have to weed anything that comes up through the holes where the plants are.

If you do a cut & come again salad bed or "baby lettuce heads" it should work out fine :) fortunately, many lettuces & other greens need not be grown to full size before harvest. I usually add the maximum from both the days to germination and the days to harvest to estimate the amount of time under less than ideal conditions (i.e. shorter days, cooler weather, etc.) Some plants will come in under target others may need an additional 10% or so. Another trick is to slip the transplants directly in with the with almost full grown crop in hopes that you will harvest the old plants before the new ones grow large enough to need the space. And, some shade is okay in this case because you can use the shade from the almost-ready-to-harvest plants to transition/harden off indoor started seedlings for the outdoor full sun conditions. Just be very careful when you harvest.

Thanks for posting this, it's very helpful. This is my first year gardening in the PNW, and I'm feeling a bit at sea with all the tales of tomato disappointment I've been seeing. Not that it wasn't difficult growing them back in South TX, where I had to hope they'd produce before the blast-furnace heat and disease stopped the plants. :( I'm glad to hear Sungold does well, as that's one tomato I don't ever want to be without. I would like to ask -- how large do Sungold plants get here (say, in the Willamette valley)? Back in TX, mine were easily over 6 ft tall. I'm wondering how big a cage I'll need here. The others I'm considering are divided into two groups: Ones I'm considering b/c I've heard they do well here: Anna Russian Legend Willamette Momotaro Carmello Bloody Butcher Northern Lights Japanese Black Trifele One's I don't think I can stand not to grow b/c I love them: Aunt Ruby's German Green Ananas Noire Old German/Pineapple/some other red/gold bicolor (suggestions?) If anyone's got opinions on these, I'd love to hear them. I tend to like low-acid tomatoes with a sweet/savory flavor, meaty flesh and not many seeds (like ARGG and many other large, oddly colored heirlooms) so suggestions on that type that might be successful here are most welcome. Also, what tomato and other vegetable cultivars can I expect to see in the nurseries and garden centers come spring? I'm not used to what people tend to grow up here, obviously, so I don't know which tomatoes I'll have to order and which I'll be able to find. As for what else I'm going to grow, well, I just planted sugar snaps today, and will probably plant trombocino/zuccheta rampicante once it warms up. I'd love to try more vegies, but honestly, I suspect a large part of my very small garden is going to be filled with the ornamentals I could never grow in TX -- dahlias, peonies, delphiniums, and annuals like nasturtiums and sweet peas.

I haven't even given that much thought to flowers yet. I have seeds but haven't decided what to do with them, if anything. My hesitation is driven by the drought. (I'd plant a lot more flowers if I was sure I could keep them alive.) Part of the hesitation is driven by waiting to see which perennials/re-seeding annuals have survived last year's/this year's drought. I'm expecting some did and some didn't and I'll have to decide, based on that, what to plant or not plant.

Our long-term spring forecast for our part of the state through May calls for persistent drought, warmer-than-usual temperatures, and lower-than-average rainfall, so I am going to be very conservative with the flowers.

If I ever make up my mind and start some flower seeds, I'll post a list. I have so many perennials and re-seeding annuals that I really don't "have to" plant any more flowers, but I always do anyway!

I've gotten several types of tomatoes (Thanks again Dawn!) that are about 1.5-2 inches high and soon to be ready to move up into holding pots, a few different peppers, broccoli,lettuce, etc started. I'll make a more detailed list later.

As far as my flowers/outdoor plants, well, aside from some marigolds and Nasturtiums, I've not started any yet. Like Dawn, I'm waiting to see what reseeds/comes back this year. My Marigolds and Nasturtiums are for companion plantings, so they need to be ready when I start setting out veggie transplants. I'm still in the process of deciding just what all I'm going to do... and be able to do.. this year. I know a lot of people who are really eager for spring and start their flowers, then run out of room to start their veggies. The veggies always come first with me, along with my "pest catchers" as my boys call them. Herbs are an ongoing, year round thing for me, but I have started some that will go out into the veggie gardens as companion plants as well.

Uggg.. I still need to get my hands on more seed for the Packman broccoli. I had a few, but not as many as I wanted and the couple of stores here that I can manage to get into (i.e. has a wheelchair so I don't have to to walk/stand a lot right now) don't seem to have it. I think I'm going to send DH to a couple other stores and see if he can find some. I knew I should have just ordered it several weeks ago, but wasn't really thinking so much about broccoli varieties with so many tests, etc for my back.

Eh, if I don't get it started in time, maybe I can stick it in that dapple shaded corner that seems to get light, but not much heat. It's a really odd little corner in my yard. Lettuce does well there once the weather starts heating up, so I may add a few broccoli transplants there this year too. What'cha think, everyone? The lettuce that I put there for summer harvest doesn't bolt nearly as fast as warmer parts of the yard, so you think the broccoli will do alright there too?
