Your Two Favorite Medium to Large Hostas

Okay,

I've decided I'm going to order 2 hostas for fall planting. (I was going to wait until spring, but the hostaholic within me has won out).

So. What are your two favorite hostas...either new or old standby's. I'll be interested to hear what you all have to say.

I prefer hosta with good substance....but color, markings, and whether or not they are 'pie-crusted' are immaterial. I just want something that will 'wow' me by the end of the next hosta season.

Well, today my two favorites are Paul's Glory and Olive Bailey Langdon. By tomorrow I could have new favorites.

Olive Bailey is my best looker right now. I settled for it, when I had really wanted Jack of Diamonds. Glad I did, although JOD is still on the list.

Ken, I've got a great Rainforest Sunrise, so you don't have to track down a pic. I'd already thought about moving a section; your endorsement confirmed that decision. Lois -- Radiant Edger is terrific! My Hadspen Blue is probably in too much shade; it doesn't look nearly as good as yours. Maybe I'll move mine. The shape of Hadspen Heron is intriguing; how large is it? From the pics, I'd guess that both HH and Golden Specter are somewhat small. Thanks for your input! Nance

What's your favorite white-hot hosta?

Hi everybody, I seem to have a lot of trouble integrating the white/green ones into the landscape with hostas of different colours. I don't know why. Here's a picture of Francee in the middle and her sport, Patriot, at the top. I planted aruncus aesthofolius just starting to flower) with its white plumes in the same bed. I don't think it's possible for a single answer to this question. I use different methods and different materials depending on which particular plant, plant part, time of year. For *most* cuttings I would use something like 60% aged mulch (shredded, not chipped,) 30% composted leaves/grass, 10% top soil (bagged if I have it/bed dirt if I don't.) But this would be too "airy" for something like Coleus or persian shield. I haven't bought a bag of anything but mulch or top soil in about 10 years. Don't own any hormones or powders. Wouldn't use perlite (ugly) or peat (no inherently positive qualities and a problem-causer, IMO) if it was free and already 2 steps away. Very few plants can grow in sand, I've always been puzzled and fascinated by that phenomenon, but no interest in trying. These vastly different testimonials teach us there is no right or wrong way, just different ways that work for different people and plants. Plants are amazingly adaptable and it's fun to experiment and read about what is possible, and to know about other options if one tries something that fails.

My absolute Medium/Large all-yellow favorite is Aspen Gold. It has thick substance...so totally slug-free; grow it in full sun for best color; it should grow to 18"H x 45"W at maturity; nice heavy corrugated leaves make it a stunning hosta.
Â Choo Train is also all-yellow/gold and will grow larger to about 22"H x 60"W; it also has thick substance.
Others that you may consider are: Dick Ward, Delta Dawn and Five O'Clock Somewhere.

not knowing what you have.. makes it a bit tough ...

OBL is one of the slowest in my yard ... what is it.. an improved FW??? or the opposite coloration????

Paradigm and Journey's End would be two good "Wow" hostas in a fairly short time.

Another vote for OBL,it still looks good in my garden,and grows waay faster than Frances Williams. Also Abiqua Moonbeam,is a new favorite this year,after only being planted last year,it is easily double it's size from last year. Phil

I planted Paradigm and Deep Blue Sea both this summer and even now, they are 'Wow' hostas in my garden.

Abba Dabba Do is a good one and I agree with Guardian Angel and Paul's Glory, dynamite plants! Gold Standard is an oldie but goodie, everyone needs that one IMHO.

The one that totally wowed me this year was a hosta that I haven't heard too much about here - Essence of Summer. All green, which usually isn't my favorite, but so elegant with beautiful and extremely fragrant flowers for a month or so in mid summer.

This is it's first year. I have a pretty small yard and actually don't want my hostas to grow big too quickly. But this one keep encouraging to grow and multiply - I'd love to have it take over.

For a second choice I have to agree with the people recommending OBL. Mine isn't growing quickly, but even with just four leaves it definitely has a presence in the garden. Soothing but interesting, elegant but down to earth. I feel like I need some language similar to what wine experts use to describe.

Newer ones with wow factor in my garden are Ebb Tide, Spring Fling, Deep Blue Sea, and Liberty.

Older ones that always catch visitor attention are Jade Cascade, Fragrant Blue, Bold Ruffles and Daybreak.
