Dawn - I love Urban Farm, too; even have a subscription! So far, they've had really great articles, and lots of them, and it's one I keep by the bed for re-reading in the evenings.

CJ, I keep meaning to subscribe and I keep forgetting to do it. Maybe I'll go over to the website and do it in just a minute while I'm thinking of it.

It is ironic. When I gardened in the city, I read farming magazines (and Taunton's Kitchen Gardener magazine, which ceased publication a few years ago) because most gardening magazines were oriented much more towards ornamental gardening. Now that I live in the country, I read "Urban Farm" even though I'm in a rural area and not an urban one.

So many of the good gardening magazines that once had lots of veggie and fruit growing articles are gone now, but I read all the ones that are still around, and "Urban Farm" is much more interesting for those of us who garden than Hobby Farm or Hobby Farm Home.

Dawn - Kitchen Gardener was another favorite of mine, and the first I read regularly that was geared toward food production rather than ornamentals (altho a kitchen garden can be a pretty sight!). But, the last few years I just want to read and learn about growing food and doing it sustainably.

We currently garden on about 1/3 of an acre, but will be moving soon to a small urban lot, about one mile from downtown Tulsa. The lot is a blank slate, and I'm excited to be able to start over with what I've learned over the past 10 years.

CJ, Starting over with a clean slate can be fun, and it sure will be easier to start over with the experience you've gained over the last decade. At the very least, you already know which veggies produce larger vs. smaller quantities of produce so you can decide more easily how to use the space you have. "Urban Farm" should have some great ideas that will be just what you need to help make the transition from a larger lot to a smaller one.

I've been hoping Taunton Press might bring Kitchen Gardener magazine back to life, but the closest they've come to it so far is the handful of issues of "Grow!" that they've had on the newstands periodically the last few years. I have really enjoyed them.

I think that down here the Main Event is the cold and the wind with the snow being almost a non-event, and our cold won't be nearly as bad as the cold further north of us. The low temp at Burneyville bottomed out at 11, but it is now 17 degrees at our house with s wind chill just below zero---varying from -1 to -3 depending on how hard the wind is blowing. The snow arrived here many hours later than forecast and is moving through quickly. We have snow on the ground, but it only looked like about 1/4 to 1/2" when I was outside earlier putting out birdseed for the wild birds. The local schools waited until this morning to cancel because we still had nothing here at midnight and everyone was thinking/hoping the snow might miss us.

Just on the basis of cold alone, I wouldn't want the kids out in this weather, especially those who have to wait for the school bus out in the rural areas.

I stalk the newstands for this magazine and have purchased every issue since Dawn first recommended it when it was new. I wasn't aware that they were taking subscriptions yet, but I just subscribed. It is 100% my favorite magazine ever.

Jo, I have been able to find it a few times at Lowes and Atwoods.

Jo, I think they posted the subscription announcement on their website in November or December and started accepting subscriptions then that would start with the Jan/Feb 2011 issue. I meant to subscribe then but was busy with all the holiday stuff and fire dept. stuff and it slipped my mind.

I was not aware of 'Urban Farm' Magazine until now. Seems to be add-on module in future subscripts.

I have already subscribed two magazines; 1. Oklahoma Gardener and 2. Garden Gate.

From my experience, I noticed that both magazine talks lot of ornamental and landscaping... but limited articles on growing vegetables and sustainable gardening. Please correct me if I am wrong or missed previous subscriptions.

Chandra - I agree with you, that OK Gardener and Garden Gate deal mainly with ornamentals, and not much in the way of vegetables & sustainable gardening. I had subscriptions to both in the past, and dropped them when my interest switched over to vegetable growing. Another one I dropped recently is Organic Gardening; seemed like I was reading the same thing, month to month, and that's when I found Urban Farm. Much happier with it.

For a great magazine that has fantastic articles on growing veggies, check out Mother Earth News. It has quickly become my favorite and I devour each issue cover to cover. They usually offer yearly subscriptions for $10, which also includes access to their online version, and I feel as if I've received thousands of dollars worth of advice.

Yeah, I am subscribing to both. I was purchasing Fine Gardening, but the focus is all ornamentals. They produce one called "vegetable gardener" but good luck getting issues of it. Mother earth news is just great and I am growing to love urban farm.
