Most of the state has ugly dormant grass during the winter and spring but what you could do is hire a "landscape contractor" to do it then you can legally comply with the restrictions. IF you apply a pesticide to your lawn you can also comply with the restictions. Obviously the laws were not enforced because it's practically impossible to do so which is why we're in this predicament with unfair rules to begin with so if you can pull off several brief waterings each day for the next week, you're in business. You might also look into hyrdoseeding.

(grinning) Marilyn, Our garden centers and nurseries here in southcentral OK routinely bring in fresh veggie transplants at various times in the summer, but never discount the older ones. I have seen them throw the old plants away as fresher plants take their place on their shelves. I guess they consider tossing the old plants just a cost of doing business. Usually, by the time veggie transplants are old enough that they are throwing them away, they are so old and rootbound that they likely wouldn't perform well if planted in a garden at that point anyway. In my experience, veggie transplants are rarely on sale at any of the big box stores. You can find them on sale sometimes at independent nurseries, though that seems more true at the end of spring planting season than in August when it is time to plant fall gardens. For seeds, I just watch the websites of the online retailers from whom I routinely purchase seeds. Most of them send emails to tell me when they have seeds on sale, and I haven't gotten any of those sale emails yet. Usually, at some point in late summer or early autumn, the online seed retailers do indeed have clearance sales, but not quite this early in August. I routinely purchase seeds in the fall for the following garden year. When the sale emails start arriving, I'll let you know. Dawn

I definitely agree that things grow much slower in the fall. I need to start my cabbages, broccoli, kale, and collards soon. Have everything on my table just haven't gotten to it yet. And I need to get some labels. Tomorrow maybe. Brussels take forever, usually started in spring and harvested in fall here. Mine from spring aren't doing anything but I did plant a tricky red variety. Maybe they will grow alot more soon. I planted today some bush beans and carrots. I pulled my garlic and planted cowpeas there. My onions are coming along nice but need several more weeks. My dad pulled his the other day, but he always pulls them early. They are smaller than mine. I want big onions. When I pull them I will have that raised bed to plant but the dirt has settled quite a bit will need to add more, which is why I have not seeded anything else in there. Too early for peas. I sowed some lettuce and beets the other day. And some okra, but am not sure if it will have time. I need a place for rutabagas, parsnips, and turnips. May skip the turnips, not real sure I know any good turnip recipes. This weather we have here at this rate I'll be lucky to harvest anything by fall. I have been getting lots of broccoli and have a few cabbages ready. Been eating kale and lettuce salads. Dying for a green bean or tomato.

Perfect example of science moving "two steps forward and one step back"... often times the choices in the design of experiments, methodologies, interpretations, etc. are affected by unconscious biases coming from preconceived notions, monetary incentives, lack of a key piece of knowledge, etc... the motivations are not necessarily all selfish evil but more often stem from hubris and ignorance than anything else... and then of course mix in the human condition of cognitive dissonance and thus the path of science regularly takes that one step back (think of it as science making a correction)... why does this happen? "Its because you don't know what you don't know"... Unfortunately too many people hail science as being totally unbiased and thusly safe to trust/follow with blind faith... I rather look at science as being just another human endeavor and thus fallible, so its safer to reserve a bit of healthy skepticism when it comes to cutting edge science pronouncements. Thus that quote from an earlier posting above "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Both of those quotes are very profound if one will truly expend some time to ponder on the deeper meanings. I've seen quite a few examples running through this thread where people don't seem to understand what those two quotes are referring to. Oh, and Ryan... have you added the rock dust yet? Ryan? Ryan? Ryyyyaaaannn.... (spoken like in that movie... Wilson!... Willlsson!!... Wiiiillllllllssson!!!... I guess Ryan too must have just floated away....)
