Last autumn, I discovered a website for a Grants Pass, Oregon, water feature installer. The photos were great - the work is detailed enough to be "identifiable". This spring, I drove across Medford, and saw this huge water feature being finished at the entry to a neighborhood. I got out of my truck, walked over to the man and said "you're out of Grants Pass?" - response was a "yes", of course. His craftsmanship is excellent - basically ID's itself.

His work may be one of the best kept secrets of the Pacific NW. Up close, his stone arrangement and fit, appears very much like that of Karisu, without the oriental style. Also, I'm not sure if Bryce builds "tranquil" features. I know he prefers large projects.

His website is temporarily off-line, being redesigned strarting this week. I started an album, though, showing that water feature. I plan to recommend him around northern Oregon, at least. Here's the album - the first frame is a VIDEO and the rest photos....

Holy Moly! That's spectacular! Must cost a fortune. Nice rocks! Nice sound. HUGE. Would really enjoy seeing all his work. Slideshow and video fascinating.

Thanks for posting this! Wish I had 500 acres, 5 billion dollars and could hire him to install something like that near my mansion :-)

It's worth about $225,000

One that like takes months to build - like 5 to 6 months.

That one has close to 324 tons of columnar basalt.

He can build smaller water features than that - certainly 1/4 that size.

You can't use a wheelbarrow to move material? That's how I move most material. But I've done the bucket procedure too. It's certainly work, but doable. Good work out. Like I said, I wouldn't buy the manufactured systems either. Just cheaper and easier to built it myself. I like doing this type of work. The main issue I think you would have is the speed at which water could flow between rocks for such a high GPH. 2" drain rock and a 5 gal bucket is OK for say 2000 or 3000 GPH. Of course you could just use 3 or 4 pumps. What I would do for a single 10,800 GPH pump is dig the basin and lay EPDM liner. Then a 2" thick floor of concrete, no steel, over the liner. You can get a little fancy and form a trench for the pumps if you like. Dig a V type bottom before laying the liner. Then final form with concrete. Then I would dry stack concrete block to form open areas. I'd cover with 1/2" Hardie board. JamesHardie sells in the Netherlands but there are no doubt other sellers of cement board in your area. The blocks are stacked so the board on top doesn't have to span more than say 6-8". The board is not rated to span any distance, but I find it OK for 6-8" spans for occasional walking. Certainly OK for holding up even 6" deep layer of stone. When I back fill I place rocks large enough to block gaps between blocks, and then smaller and small stone until I get to the top of the blocks. Then the cement board and then cover with the final layer of stone. You don't have to cut holes in the cement board, should be plenty of gaps around the edge. I do cut a small piece of cement board to cover the pump or pump intake so that's easier to get at. That should get you 500 gals of water easy which should be way more than needed. You can install 2 or 3 submersible pumps instead of one external to get the amount of water you want. Getting the sound of a waterfall the way you want it can be tricky. Many people do want Niagara falls. And they love it when it's turned on. But about 2 minutes later they realize they can't hear anyone talking unless they shout in their ear. Then they realize they can't turn down the flow and are not happy. Not saying this will be true for you, but it happens a lot. And there are different moods you may want. Sometimes a tiny bit of noise, other times a lot. Multiple pumps can provide that. And three 4000 GPH submersibles can be cheaper than a single external to buy and run. The biggest factor to me is pump noise. I've read many times in forums where people said their external pump was quiet, and they can be. But a water feature in a small space the last thing I want to hear when I turn it on is the customer say "what's that hum?" I don't want them to hear anything other than water. Also a super cool piece of equipment is a remote control switch. These are only $10-20, plug into an outlet and then the pump plugs into that and you turn it on and off with a little remote. Way better than having to plug cords in an out and even better than wall switches imo for the cool factor. You can also buy more complex controllers so the falls can switch on automatically just before you wake up in the morning or come home from work. They're kind of expensive, like $100-200.

Thanks hardin and Liz, I have to giggle a little at the compliment, since it seems so puny to me, compared to so many larger ones! haha But I do appreciate it! The important thing for me was angling all the stones slightly forward and supporting the big one on the bottom with dirt at an angle. Also, my bottom rock is so big, I didn't want it resting right on the lip of the stocktank, so I set it on 2 smaller flat rocks. From the side, it looks a little tilted, but gravity keeps the water from going backwards. Plus, the flat rocks need to not have any big lumps/bumps in them that might hinder the forward motion of the water. I do have the liner pulled up behind the lower rocks, with soil holding it up, so if the water does flow backwards, it can drain back into the pond. I'm always just quickly glancing at the water level throughout the day too....in case the tube becomes dislodged. I use one of those rectangular box filters. I put the pump inside it, and then direct the tubing to the waterfall. The force was too much, so I used one of those little clamps to slow it down a little. As the filter gets a little clogged, I open up the clamp. I have the clamp on the tube behind the rocks, so I can easily get to it. Thanks again for the compliment Liz. Hi All! First time poster but long time lurker here. I want to thank you all for unknowingly holding my hand through the construction of three ponds at two different houses and teaching me the biggest skill a true "ponder" needs is patience! Here is a picture of my latest effort and first waterfall- Closeup of the waterfall- The fall was build out of cement blocks sculpted with sand from the excavation of the pond itself. I backed it with leftover liner then stacked coral rocks to hide everything. It took a few tries to get everything right and stop all leaks but I am happy with the way it came out. I have just finished putting the landscaping in and when the plants mature I am hoping to soften the look of the pavers covering the edges of the liner. Sahoyaref Have no idea ,was just told this by a fellow customer at HD.lol He was using it for its intended purpose to fill spaces in walls. Between plumbing lines in his case. He said that after 3 years he had to buy more as it had shrunk away from the pipes. He also told me it could not be kept constantly wet.So far have not noticed any difference between material underwater,constantly dry and constantly wet nor has there been any loss in adhesion. It will setup and cure underwater though adhesion is very poor. It's also a lot softer and spongier. Even if this proves to be true I don't see any problem. How could a terrarium go 3 years without a major overhaul anyway??lol I'm helping a friend create a rockface for Rift lake cichlids using the super expanding type. All kinds of caves and crevices at the touch of a button and the really great thing is almost no weight. This tank is 96x24x24 deep so you can imagine how much rock that would require.Not to mention the cost!! It is going to be difficult to paint where it adheres to the glass used a layer of black silicone before the foam which will be trimmed around the faces.. You could use various colored silicone to get a more mottled effect but went with black as he thinks it looks fine. Would love to try it to make Coral platforms for marine setups. Imagine having the exact size and depth and stability. So far nobody will allow me to use it in their reeftanks lol. Have found no chemical reactions in FW in 3 months. Personall,i believe if the swings are going to occur they would happen in the first week. Have not had a single fatality of plant or animal. gary

Just noticed this topic rose to the surface.

The link was a video of that guy's water feature that I put on my image album. I removed it, because I found Bryce to unreliable.

I heard he wanted work out of the area - like more up north. So I said I'd refer him work from my website. He insisted on giving commission otherwise he didn't want the referral.

So I spent a bunch of time writing an agreement, then delivering it to him in person. Then he never contacts me again.

As a result, I removed the video and mention of him from my website.

It's sort of odd in one way, because nobody else has ever tried to insist on conditions before to send them work. Anybody else I've met and referred, is glad to have the referral.

It was like Bryce was trying to attach strings to something that was not his place to attach strings too.

His workmanship seems sound. If anything, I'd just question the business relationship angle.

Thanks for the update mdvaden. I googled him but could find nothing. Weird. I've been fantasizing about having a water feature like this ... yeah have to win the lottery ... and was surprised when your link was blank. How many ppl are wealthy enough to do this?

Oh well, water is an awesome wonder and somebody else will create amazing waterfalls. When one door closes others open eagerly!

Eamonn Hughes of Hughes Water Gardens in Tualatin is a highly reputable local pond/waterfall installer. His garden center is well worth visiting, it is on Stafford Rd. Just south of I205. I highly recommend visiting it for anyone interested in ponding.

You don't have to be wealthy to have a waterfall/pond. I have 9 and I assure you I'm not wealthy. IF you are handy you can do them without a pro.

My biggest pond is 8 x 13 or so. Kinda shaped like a lightbulb rather than rectangular. DH ran the electrical in a conduit and our filter is DIY. The biggest expense is the pump (pony up for a good one like Pondmaster) and the liner.
