Mock Orange problem
Comments (10)Oh Golly !!! I have just today bought a Virginal mock orange and am in trepidation having read all the postings on this site WOW!! what have I taken on?? I too was beguiled by the scent of MO....My shrub is tiny at present about 2feet tall and we have clayey oil but with leaf loam on top of that , so MO will have his toes in the cooling clay...We scattered some chicken poo pellets in the planting hole and watered well.Interesting point one person stated that you need 2x MO's to make sweet sweet music , mine is planted opposite my neighbours , That one is a single variety but it blossoms like great drifts of snowballs , so perhaps they will fall in love with each other ,( keep your fingers crossed ).Sooooooo , we have watered it well and left it with kind encouraging words falling on it's leaves ( it is not in blossom either , YUK , how negative! )It is facing south westerly and will get the sun from approx 10am around to 4pm every day , so it won't be cooked all day long , it is next to a Buddleia "Black Knight " so the butterflies will hopefully make it feel nice and wanting to grow!! I hope everyone out there in Gardenland will think a communal positive thought for my little bare MO to flourish here across the Atlantic in sunshiney England! I will keep you posted ~ watch this space!!!! :)...See MoreMock Orange
Comments (6)I planted a dwarf one last Fall in a AM sun exposure and bloomed so fully and beautifully mid-Spring it reminded me so much of the Jasmine fragrance and my neighbors just swooned over when the breeze blew! My tag says Bailey Nurseries and got her at Home Depot - her mature size will be 2-3ft X 1-2ft spread. I just wish that the blooms lasted a bit longer, the little girl is done blooming and little pea size hips are forming ... wonder what they'll turn out to be, any ideas? Ditas...See MoreMock Orange.
Comments (19)Greetings! If I am picking up on a thread that is too old to revive, please let me know. I did a search for mock orange and this came up. Bought a house with 20 foot tall mock orange, in a row about 50 ft. long. They only leaf out on the top 10 ft, and last year when we moved in, I found only 2 blooms. Sooo.... I figure my choices are pretty limited in regards to reviving them. Are they hardy enough to lop off to the ground and just hope they regrow? If that is the answer then what time of year? Our growing season is so short so I figured early in spring as soon as they leaf out? I would like to know how all of you guys have done with your mock oranges- hope to hear good news- and good info! Thanks for your input-peace...See MorePhiladelphus (mockorange) never bloomed!
Comments (19)When I moved to this house, I brought a small division of a shrub with white fragrant flowers from the previous house. I didn't know what it was, and couldn't really remember what the flowers looked like, but from the leaves and stems, thought it was Viburnum dentatum, Arrowwood Viburnum. This shrub has been in the ground for five years here at this house, in a mostly full sun location. It is now 8-9 feet tall and very healthy, but no blooms all these years! Lo and behold, it has flowered for the first time this year. Turns out it's Philadelphus 'Virginal', not Arrowwood Viburnum. Not a lot of blooms, but at least it's flowering and yes it's very fragrant. I was just telling the shrub it had better bloom soon, or it was getting moved to a less prominent location. :)...See MoreRon_B
