Poet`s Jasmine When can I move it??

Just completed some new lattice work, and would like to move my Jasmine now. I have a huge 25 gallon container to put it in once I move it. It is 2 years old and about 3ft high should be larger but suffers from exposure during winter. New site will be sheltered from the winds (I am in Zone 8). Can I move it now? Or do I have to wait till fall or spring? Any help on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks!

Timing is terrible but hard to believe it will croak. You will be interrupting its development for this year but it will probably bounce back if you get enough roots. Water deeply some days before the operation so it has plenty of water in it and the rootball is adhesive, maybe wait and see if there is some dull weather coming. Shading it with something after the move probably wouldn't hurt either.

Thanks Bboy: Might be some dull weather in about 7 or 8 days. Will wait and see. Doesnt look like it will flower this year anyway. Will give it a little bit of "root booster" to help it along. In its new location the roots will be shaded till about 4pm and mostly only the top will get full sun. ps-did have Jackmani clematis in that location and they went really rampant!! Have moved it to a location where rampant is okay-lol In that scenario I made the mistake of putting 2 different kinds of Clematis in one location, with 2 different pruning times, and it was impossible to prune cause they became intertwined.What a mess that was!! Thanks again for your help.

you can probably dig it up now.. and leave it on the driveway.. until the new spot is ready ... it might not be pretty.. but you are going to be hard pressed to kill it.. so dont worry about it ... when it come time to move it.. do it on a rainy day.. or a cloudy day.. for reduced stress ... ken

Can I move an iris when its in bloom?

I agree with iris_gal. In addition I would say that you should only move them if you have to. A local woman sells them while in bloom. While it's great knowing it's what you want it does take it's toll on the plant. Years ago she instructed me to cut the flowers once I had labeled them, because they will just die. Since back then I was even shocked to hear of trimming back the leaves(to height of 6 or 8 inches in an inverted V shape ^ ) I didn't follow her advice. The flowers wilted and the leaves weighed down the plants (toppling several). Luckily I was able to save the remaining buds and enjoy them in a vase. I still buy from her each year, but I always expect them to be even more unsettled than the rhizomes sent at the proper time. I don't know siberians well enough to suggest a good yellow, but I do grow i. pseudacorus. It's considered invasive by many and is banned in some states. I grow mine along-side my TB's and it's never even started to crowd anything. Since I'm too inexperienced to execute a proper soil test(as anyone should) I use a generally accepted fertilizer. I buy mine at Walmart with the numbers 6-10-10. I can't say it's the best for everyone, but at least it hasn't harmed my plants. I realize that I ramble, but I hope I've helped somehow. Brock

How can I store bulbs to take with me when I move?

Daffodil bulbs can be lifted, separated from the dirt and allowed to dry for storage in a cool place. I did that when I moved and they were fine. That is the only bulb that I am familiar with.

The Poet’s Wife or The Pilgrim?

Helen - here are some photos of The Poet's Wife, followed by The Pilgrim. Here's The Pilgrim. I think you have The Poet's Wife and I don't believe it will be climber based on my experience. It seems to be more of low, spreading shrub. Nice fragrance and has good bloom frequency. I just wish the flowers were a bit bigger and more cupped. I've seen others on this forum growing this rose quite well, so I need to try harder with her. My preference is for The Pilgrim because of its elegant, upright form, more petals than TPW, and lovely fragrance. I recall seeing this rose at The Berkeley Rose Garden where I believe it's grown as a very large climber on a trellis. I sent a message through Facebook to the The Garden's FB rep and asked about bloom frequency; he said it bloomed quite a bit in Berkeley. I also asked Vintage Gardens and the person who answered said they grew it personally in Mendocino and it was quite stingy. In Berkeley, where the rose garden is on a terraced hillside facing west, TP is sitting on top of a trellis, getting nearly all day sun and is doing very well. Since mine is getting all day partial sun, I guess I might experience bloom stinginess. I do love this rose however, and I'm glad I got it! Ann
