You could dig them and put them in pots to go dormant, but I would invest in some labels and mark what and where the bulbs are. It may be a good idea as well to make a drawing that shows you where they are, so you can find them to dig them up when you get ready to leave. Make sure to dig far enough away that you don't slice them up. I might also talk to the landlord to get permission to come back in the spring to fetch anything you might have missed just in case. Beware of using bone meal if you have doggies that will have access to that area. I once planted tulips, placing some bone meal in each planting hole. My 3 furbabies did not rest until they had every newly planted tulip dug up, trying to get to 'the bone'. Just try and keep your bulbs as cool as possible, and then plant asap once the area is ready. Last weekend the ground in my yard was fine! Thinking there was plently of time left in the season, I was easily taken in by the great sale at bloomoingbulb.com and I ordered more 100 bulbs on Monday. They arrived on Thursday-- with free extras! I forced myself out into the sunny, but 30 degree garden this afternoon and planted half of the sale bulbs. I planted 66 bulbs through 2 inches of frost encrusted top soil! I have enough bagged dirt to pot up and force the daffodils and "queen of the night" tulips included free with my order. Now, I just have to figure out what to do with the remaining 50 mixed darwin tulips once destined for a fixed, raised bed (an idea abandoned due to advice from this site). Taking a tip from cindi_in_ks' post in another thread, I had the idea tonight they could be planted in the still exposed electrical trench dug this summer for our new garage. The trail of mounded dirt runs right through the middle of the lawn, but is probably the last open area big enough for 50 bulbs. Like cindi says, I can always move them next Spring. I'd cut a new plot in the grass, but the grassy areas *do* seem to be frozen. I'll be back outside tomorrow-- it should be close to 40! Good luck to the rest of you. I have found Longview Gardens (on Bannister Rd west of Highway 50) to be one of the best places for annuals, herbs and especially perennials. I can find annuals and perennial varieties I cannot find anywhere else. Family owned and knowledgeably staffed, they are truely gardeners before being they are "sales" people. They have many more unique varieties/cultivars of perennial to choose from than anyone else. It may not be fancy looking like Heartland or Suburban but well worth the drive. It's not that far away from Heartland Nursery (take View High Dr North from I470 to Bannister, true right and go about 1 mile[on the right]). http://www.longviewgardens.com/ I like to buy my vegetable starts at the brookside farmer's market (Sat AM's at 63rd Wornall) as several growers there have great selections of heirloom vegetable varieties you wont find even at Family (money) Tree. I plant plants for a living. I dont care for suburban's potting soil mix for the plants the sale which seems to favor lots of pine bark soil conditioner (this is especially true of their perennials). It may make it easier for them to grow (drains well) and look good in their displays but I find their roots have a harder time adjusting to new soils. They are ok for new installs where one has worked up an entire bed though. I also dont care for their compost. It often has trash, smells of ammonia and if left out in the sun for any length of time usually starts to form salt deposits at it's edges.
