Shrubs or Bushes for Flowerbed

We have a new house with a very long empty flower bed in front of the entrance. I am looking for something that stays green year around but not necessarily pine. Does anyone have any good ideas of some small bushes or shrubs that are easy maintenance with year around greenery? I dont mind if they have flowers.

You didn't say if the bed faces north, south, east or west, if it is in full sun or part shade or heavy shade, etc., so it is hard to say what would do well there. The shrubs I'd recommend for a west-facing wall that bakes in the heat in the summer months clearly would be quite different from those I'd recommend for a north-facing wall.

So, I've linked a thread from a couple of years ago that includes a list of plants for all the different exposures (N, S, E, W), and then many other people's replies too, so from the thread linked below, you should get lots of ideas.

Within any plant family listed, you can get shrubs of all sizes, so the list is a starting point. For example if you decided you wanted a holly shrub, there are some that get 25' tall and some that get 2' tall, so you should use the lists as a "starting point", but once you decide what type of plant you want, then all you have to do is look for cultivars that remain small and compact with little if any pruning.

Well ............ I made a mistake planting both the Sand Plum and the Korean Spice. They are too close to the north side of my stockade fence and aren't getting enough sun. Notice I took a pic of my neighbor's Sand Plum and its close to the north side of the fence. So I took a clue from that as to how to plant. But I'd forgotten that when that was planted, the people living there had a chain link fence. Sooo, I'm wondering what my odds are of transplanting the Sand Plum and the Korean further away from the fence ? I know this is the time of year to do that. They've not been in the ground that long.

Compare it to: viburnum 'cardinal candy' I'm not 100% sure but it looks very similar and I can't think of what else your shrub would be. If that's really what it is, a hedge in a more natural shape could be beautiful! I had one of these at a previous house and it grew quite large, tons of flowers in spring and red berries in summer.

Yep I think your right the pics I'm finding definitely look like the original plant. Looks like it's also commonly called "Golden Privet" and unfortunately is also on the invasive list for my area. It was also planted in an inappropriate spot for it's mature size. It's right beside the edge of the porch. I don't think that's a good place for an 8ft shrub. I'll probably just cut it to the ground and smoother it out this year and replace it with one of the large peonies like Big Ben or Bowl of Beauty.

Most shrubs will have a relatively short bloom cycle - generally just a couple of weeks at most - so you will be facing the same situation you now have with the azaleas. If you have enough room, you could pick a selection of shrubs that offer flowers at different times of the growing season. But if you focus on evergreen shrubs and even those that may have variegated foliage like Abelia 'Kaleidoscope' or Pieris 'Little Heath', you can have color to look at all year long....just not entirely from flowers :-) And you can augment the evergreen shrubs with something a bit showier, like dwarf panicle hydrangeas or a colorful foliage ninebark or a viburnum.

Our new house will be finished in two weeks. I have a huge bed in front...front faces East...morning sun. I need some landscaping shrubs, grasses and such to fill that bed. I would appreciate any suggestions. I would also like plants that have color in winter or stay green.
