Red Flag Fire Warning for SW OK

Okiedawn OK Zone 7

A Red Flag Fire Warning, indicating possible extreme wildfire behavior, has been issued for much of SW OK--essentialy in the area from Elk City to Duncan to Wichita Falls, Texas.

You can see the Red Flag Fire Warning Map at the bottom of the linked page. On that map, you can click on any county to get the forecast and the warning.

And, in case you're thinking this week's rains help diminish fire danger, they really don't. The dry dormant grasses do not "absorb" moisture so they remain tinderbox dry.

We had 2" of rain here in Love County on Monday and Tuesday and then had several grassfires, including one that briefly threatened 3 homes on Wed., so the rain wasn't much help here. In fact, rain often makes is HARDER to fight grassfires and wildfires because the fire trucks get stuck in the mud and can't get to the fires to put them out.

So, if you're in southwestern OK, keep an eye on the wind and the potential for fire!
