How to get year-round color

I'd like my garden to have more year-round color and interest, but I tend to go to the nurseries in mid spring and load up on whatever is blooming right then. What are some good Northern CA plants that I should wait for into mid summer or fall?

think about winter flowering fragrant shrubs like Wintersweet, Sarcoccoca, some Osmanthes I think. Gorgeous wafting scents that fill your dooryard. Blooms in January and February. Some say Wintersweet begins in Dec.

Witch hazel winter blooming wafting fragrance, big bush or small tree.

Also early blooming bulbs like snowdrops and aconite will bloom in February. Hellebores are winter bloomers, but many have green flowers.

My hardy cyclamens happily bloomed along the path all winter, happy little pink and white things.

It's hard to go wrong with Sasanqua Camellias like 'Yuletide', which I particularly like because it is easy to prune.

Luis, if you google for tapestry hedge, you should be able to get photos of hedges made up of a number of different plants. The hedges may be sheared and have straight sides, or they may have been left to grow naturally. Laceyvail is right, too much variegation can be very busy looking, while some is an accent. I wouldn't have a border made up of a plain shrub, a variegated shrub, a colored shrub, a plain shrub, a variegated shrub, etc., etc., but would rather plant a plain green (which might flower or have berries), maybe another plain green with a different texture of leaf or color of flower or time of flower, a variegated, a plain, a colored, a plain with some interest, another plain, or a not-too-busy variegated, a colored, etc., etc. No regimentation, no clashing colors or overpowering shapes. Despite my mentioning a tapestry hedge, I would plant the shrubs far enough apart that they can grow and "show" off their shapes, colors and forms. Chueh, how much room can you give to this project in width, and how long is it? And how much sun does it get, at what times of the day, winter and summer? Knowing these things, we can offer suggestions as to what of the shrubs mentioned can work. I STRONGLY advise you to look around your neighborhood at what you like that is growing well there, both in private homes and in public areas, then look around and see what the local nurseries have, so you know you can get then easily. I would also look up on the various websites and in garden books the various shrubs mentioned here, so you know what they look like and if you like the looks. One suggestion - take nursery advice with a bit of caution - come back here and ask if it is good before acting on it as some nurseries, and their advice, are better than others. And take the hang-tag's - attached to a plant in nurseries - statements as to the mature height and width of a plant with a large grain of salt - frequently the height/width mentioned is what to expect after 10 years in the ground, not the ultimate height/width.

Thanks for all your replies! I live in CA, on the central coast so I think my zone is 8b. Myfamilysfarm- I live approximatley 40 miles from Gilroy, CA "the garlic capital" I'm wondering how cold it has to be as normally in the winter, it gets to the low 40's. But in the summer it is crazy hot (90's) because they are more inland, so when you drive through Gilroy, you can smell the garlic, it smells soo good! I usually smell the garlic during the summertime though. mrclint- that's good to hear that you harvest year around! Just exactly how long did it take you to get a system going? And I'm wondering if there is a chart system, or something in a spreadsheet with dates or something that one could use to plant this and when and then expect to harvest it, and then plant again? defrost49- I am in zone 8b, in CA I don't plan on growing vegetables outside, although, I guess the mild climate where I live is possible. It seems like where you live gets pretty cold and possibly snows? I think it *maybe* gets below freezing a couple of times during the winter. I guess the interesting thing is, and I just realized, that a lot of produce comes from the valley near where I live, especially artichoke, strawberries, broccoli and salad. I think this is a year round venture because they supply a lot of vegetables to other states. But I could be wrong, I am completely naive when it comes to this whole gardening thing and I guess my next step would be to contact my local co-ops and organic farms in the area. As with my living situation, I would prefer to garden indoors if possible and maybe use grow lights? That was the only thing I could think of as getting vegetables year around. But I guess if it could be done outside, I could try too...but we have so many critters and things, I really think indoors is a better option...and I rent and so my veggies would have to be in containers anyways, as my landlord isn't very keen on the idea. It takes awhile for those habits to be instilled in children. I think it's normal for those things to "work" for a week and then a child backslides into old bad habits. During that time you need to be vigilant and enforce the rules and schedule. Regarding tv, my suggestion is to turn the tv off almost all the time. I don't know if that would work for your household or not, but when my kids were that age we rarely watched tv. You need to model the behaviors you want her to follow, so read a book or play a game instead of turning the tv on. I've known lots of kids who concentrate on the tv rather than things going on around them. That's common, in my opinion, and the fix for that is to turn off the tv and fill her time with better things. Regarding forgetting her homework, here's what worked for me. My son went through a time of forgetting his homework. I was always able to go back to school and get the book for him, but that's a habit I wanted to nip in the bud. So we made a deal - if it took me 15 minutes to go back and get the book, then my son had to do a chore that took ME 15 minutes to do. So if I went to school and got the book, he scrubbed my shower. I'd much rather go get a book than scrub the shower, so it wasn't an inconvenience for me. My son would rather remember his book than scrub the shower. Not doing homework was never an option. If the school was closed, he had to call a friend to borrow a book (and scrub the shower). If he couldn't get the book, he had to complete the homework the next day and turn it in and get a zero. But the homework was always, always done. Forgetting the book didn't get him anywhere. My suggestions are don't get angry, don't yell. Make a plan complete with consequences, be matter-of-fact and enforce the rules consistently. For things like forgetting her homework, try to make the consequences logical and to the point. For example, I wouldn't send a 7 year old to her room with no tv and make her read until bedtime for forgetting her homework. Homework is important. I would use that opportunity to calmly explain the importance of homework and we would work on that subject for the length of time it normally takes her to do her homework. For example, if she's working on addition, we'd make some addition problems and do them. Then she'd still have to bring her book home the next day and do her homework. I'd also conference with the teacher and see if she has any suggestions. Your daughter may need a checklist taped to her desk or something to remind her to bring her materials home. My kids' teachers were great at working with parents if they knew parents wanted to help their kids and would follow through. I'm not against medicating children who have ADD, but I think it's important to work on their environment first and see if that fixes the problem.

Part of the problem is limiting your impression of 'year round color and interest' to just flowers. While our mild climate offers a good number of plants that will bloom in the off-seasons (late fall to early spring), there are far more that will provide an equal amount of interest through variations in foliage color and texture or through colored or interesting stems and bark or berries.

For northern California, I wouldn't discount things like strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo), silk tassel (Garrya elliptica), nandina, phormiums, libertia, euphorbias, manzanita, edgeworthia and a whole host of evergreen shrubs, grasses and perennials. For fall color, visit the nurseries in September and October. This is a prime planting time for most of the west coast (even better than spring) and you are far more likely to see both plants that flower at that time of year as well as those that offer fall foliage color than you are shopping only early in the season.

The only thing good about planting in spring is that outlets have their best selection. Otherwise is is a lousy time to plant hardy plants (tender plants would of course die if planted at the otherwise preferred time in fall).

In spring soils are cold and soggy, top growth is underway or soon will be and summer drought is right around the corner.

Sunset Western Garden Book shows flowering times of numerous kinds of plants in the plant selection guide near the front. Otherwise I find the lists near the back of The Hillier Manual of Trees & Shrubs to be pretty good. Here's a sample (from the part called 'Flowering Trees and Shrubs for Every Month'):

I like to plant so that there is a succession of bloom from early spring until fall-
early Spring
Hellebores, species Tulips, Daffodils, Pulmonarias
Spring
Aquilegia, Ajugas, Saxifrage, Peonies, Bleeding Hearts, Irises (particularly Tall Bearded), Roses, Clematis, Hardy Geraniums, Rosemary, Epimedium, many shrubs
Summer
Roses, daylilies, Phygelius, Fuchsias, Hardy Geraniums, Lilies, Dahlias, Clematis, Japanese Anemones, many perennials, annuals
Fruit, veg- (you have to eat too) Apples, Pears, Blueberries- evergreen varieties and regular have beautiful fall color, Raspberries tomatoes, squash, beans,
Fall
Roses, Fuchsias, grasses, Dahlia, Nandina for fall color

This is a zone 7-8 list so you could grow way more things

One neglected winter color is what I call "better green".

At our next home (just a week or so away), I plan to replace the less than prime front lawn, and improve the soil, with a new sod lawn cover.

A well tended and properly "fed" lawn, can provide a much more pleasing green color in winter. Not perfect, but rather nice to compensate for deciduous foliage falling.

Doubt I'd plant it, but there is some Cryptomeria that turns reddish of purplish in winter.

I plan to plant a decent group of blue fescue, one of my favorite plants to look at in winter.
