OK, I took a picture. Unfortunately, not in bloom, but at least you can see the leaves. It was sold to me as bearberry, but I'm sure it's not. Like I say, it blooms in the late summer or early fall - the blooms last later than anything else in the garden. The leaves are pointier, and not that dark glossy color. They get reddish in the fall, though, like bearberry, and the flowers are similar. It gets positively *covered* with bloom. Very pretty. I thought maybe salal, but it blooms in the spring, too. Unfortunately, this plant has been very stressed and isn't showing itself at it's best, but it'll perk up. It's *very* hearty.

It kind of looks like that newish cultivar of Lonicera nitida with the purplish foliage.

I see what you mean, but I don't think so. The red leaves are the old growth, not the new. I couldn't find anything about the honeysuckle flowers, but these look like bearberry - urn-shaped pink flowers.

Branches like Jasminum, leaves like Abelia. Are those Abelia calyces out there on the far left? Bearberry is Arctostaphylos, this thing isn't going to have its little urns.

Ummm....I suppose it's just possible that it's some variant of prostrate abelia with pink flowers, but this isn't a nursery that tends to have anything unusual, and they had a lot of it for quite awhile. I do know that I always pass on abelia in the nursery!

The leaves are neither dark nor glossy. They are somewhat darker than what you see here, however. I can't remember how the flowers look, except that they're small, pink and very visible. There's no orange throat. They also don't have all that extra "stuff" I see around pictures of abelia bloom. It has a low growing, arching habit. It used to sit in an ornamental pot on my 2nd story porch railing. It arched out and down. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the new growth *is* bronzy. I know that some of the leaves turn dark red in the fall. I'll go look at it again if it ever stops raining.

I'm frustated that it isn't something straightforward. We're putting in a shrubby groundcover, and I wanted to convince my husband to use this instead of bearberry, because the bloom is more noticeable.

Show a closer view, including the reddish parts near the tips. It looks like it may have flower buds right now.

Looks a little like my Abelia Edward Goucher - that willy-nilly growth habit, leaves and the fact it blooms in the fall. Are the blooms tubular?

It almost looks like cotoneaster to me, the branches and leaves are somewhat like willowleaf (salicifolius) but I don't think the flower shape fits. Cotoneaster dammeri is often called bearberry but the "coral beauty" I have has rounder leaves. But you didn't mention any berries so.....so much for my musings ;-)

While none of them is the right plant, it told me that I'd better stop using "bearberry" and stick with Arctostaphylos uva-ursi,or Kinnikinick, and made me feel much better about having the wrong plant!

Yes, Abelia Edward Goucher was what I was thinking when I said it *might* be...even if this isn't, the Abelia might be for me - I've thought about it before...how tall does that get around here?
