a problem with Christmas Tree- (stress?)-1 pic

One and a half month ago, when I have arrived, as is usual, in a garden in the evening on Friday, I have seen, that my hosta for five days is eaten exactly half. Under leaves I have found a lot of eaten a caterpillar which has carried in a wood. I think, my hosta has transferred strong stress as hardly it has not been eaten. Now leaves at it have grown new and it blossoms. I think, because of the transferred stress. At us already 45 degrees (Far.) From a mouth at conversation goes pairs- it is cold raining.

How you think, whether to enable a hosta to blossom or to break out an arrow? What for it will be greater stress? To process in due time (after eating up by its caterpillar) antistressful preparations I have not guessed, as did not know, that it so will react.

Hi Natalia,
To encourage maximum growth, you could remove the flower scape (blossom), eliminate the caterpillar, and provide plenty of water and sunlight. Happy gardening! Don

Hi Natalia! I'm thinking that you are already getting very cold temps, as you said it has been 45 degrees
Fahrenheit, for you! I think you must be fearing a drop in temps, even further ,a very real possibility before
long! Am I correct?

Your concern seems to be that it is putting out new growth at a time it should be going dormant! In that case--I
wonder, if it would be best to dig it up and put it in a cold garage, where it would not get any sunlight! Perhaps
it would be encouraged to go dormant, while not allowing new growth to be prematurely damaged! I am only guessing
that it could work. And, perhaps, if left where it is, all this would happen as well!

I'm not sure if this is the information you are looking for, but I hope it will prove worthwhile, somehow!
It really looks in good shape right now! :o)

I bought extra hoses and soaker hoses yesterday. My yard is huge - no way to haul buckets of water. I am soaking my trees individually very well. I am looking at about 20+ huge oaks to care for so its quite labor intensive. I have a horse farm, so oaks everywhere. Fortunately, I have lots of water spigots. Water bill will be like the national debt but trees are irreplacable. Just wish I knew if these with brown leaves are dying or just stressed. Dont drink coffee or tea, but thanks for suggestion - will use this for smaller plants, didnt know coffee grounds helped anything but roses. We dont have hope of any rain in the future, so I am just soaking my oaks, one by one, in the hopes I can get them through this drought. I am afraid many trees are going to be lost if we dont get rain soon. Slight chance today, but I will believe it if I see it. I am thankful at this point we are not on water restrictions - a friend in Houston said they will only be able to water twice a week starting next week, so want to get these trees soaked before that happens. Only 2 more weeks in August......maybe things will change before its too late for the trees. Judith

next step ... call your county extension agent.. and ask what the ambient weather has been for the last two year.. in regard to pines ... drought is drought.. so what.. it increases shedding... its frankly.. irrelevant .... it does not necessarily mean.. a death march ... do keep in mind.. lawn watering.. means nothing to extremely old.. mature pines ... it would not hurt.. to put a sprinkler on LOW!!! ... so that a good drink soaks into the earth ... say a few hours... move it.. a few hours.. etc ... this has nothing to do with grass watering doing say.. 10 mins per area ... it simply wont get done into the soil.. where the roots are ... resin ID'd it .... i think.. prior to your cone.. hopefully he cruises back thru to confirm or not ... mature pines.. call it anything more than 2 foot tall.. not recently transplanted.. do not.. in any sense of the word.. rely on you for water .... think of it this way .... they would have never got that big ... in no sense are these foo foo plants ... they are forest trees .... some say .. mostly me.. lol.. that a tree is twice as big underground.. as above... the roots .. the important ones.. are not at the trunk of the tree... they could be anywhere in a 30 to 40 foot circle around the trunk ... water.. soak it.. all ... just once.. just to top it off... in case there is drought next year ... frankly ... who is frank ... there is little you can or should do for these trees... they will.. most likely .. on their own ... recover ... and one thing for sure.. and i will yell ... FERTILIZING A STRESSED PLANT... IS NOT PROPER ... its not hungry.. its reacting to an exterior stress... which we THINK is water.. so water.. do not feed it ... [your child is dehydrated.. dont force feed it ...] take none of this.. as meaning you need do much of anything.... on a tree that could live 60 to 100 years. ... a couple years of drought is not that big a deal .... so dont think you have to fix anything much ... i have maybe 50 various pines.. every 3 to 5 years.. are major shed years.. and never the same ones . ...so what ... [usually the same family will stress .. but nto all pines.. all at once ...] do not love them to death .... and that is the key ... resin said.. they are 'high deserts' pines... and in my world.. that means.. they NEVER need water [i am not talking aobut a recent transplant, which has different rules, due to the transplant] ... its just part of its cycle.. so i might even rethink my own thoughts about encouraging you to water ... good luck with your new property ... most likely ... the pines.. are the least of your worries .... ken

Thank you, thank you so much for all the wonderful comments. They are truly appreciated! I was at the mall yesterday and was looking at some of the ornaments and was very happy for the bargain I was able to get at the dollar stores. I just dollar store hop. LOL Some of my coworkers were talking about tree decorations and I suggested the dollar stores and they laughed. That is until they saw the tree. LOL The livingroom was a long process due to stupid furniture stores. I am very happy with the way it turned out though. Well worth the aggrevation. I got some great ideas on placement over in the Home Decorating forum. It is very comfy and cozy. I saw those curtains and just had to have them. I started off with just the dark brown panels but then went back for the lighter color. The beads really help it tie in with the furniture.

Joan~ Here are more pics of my window area. I have 4 hand painted tiles framed in the front by 2" of painted wood on the shelf part of my window. They have been there since the house was built and represent the town cove view in back of my house~ (the cove is calm, but about Â½ mile down it becomes the Atlantic ~ huge surfÂ. I am on outer Cape Cod). I would never change them as they are part of the cape feel of the house. The paint there is from 1992 and still not showing any water effects! I have included a pic of my DDÂs treatment of her window (bigger than mine). She has black honed granite and elected to use black painted wood for the back shelf Ânot granite. It is holding up really well (unless you look closely, you would think it is granite). As you can see she did use the granite on the short wall going up from the sink. I donÂt have paint in my still unfinished kitchenÂalso I am undecided about backsplash, etc. Did you get tired of making decisions?? After the holidays I will visit a few good tile places near me and get a feeling for what is out there. I am tending toward crackled subway tiles. In the meantime I will live with paint and procrastinate for awhile!! I hope Cindy gets back here as I want to give her holiday greetings. Carole

Or, if the temperatures are fluctuating between warm and close to frost-like at night, perhaps cover that hosta with a large cardboard box or a pail (at night), to allow the tender growth time to "harden up" a bit more before consistent cold temperatures arrive and end the growing season.

Greetings, Natalia, from cool and drought-stricken New York. (Will we have frost in September around here this year, or will it happen in October? Who knows.) When do you usually get your first killing frost?

Many hostas put out a late season flush of new leaves, so this is nothing unusual. And Christmas Tree is a very vigorous plant - leave it be, it'll come back great next year. Hostas thrive on being ignored. If you're not in the garden any more though (cold & wet, ick!), you could cut off the scape to enjoy its flowers in a vase indoors.

Thanks all for advice! At us the first weak frosts (23 degrees by Farenheit) happen in the beginning of September- be destroyed by frost Impatiens Balzamina, for example. Strong frosts (5 degrees by Farenheit) happen in the end of October.
We will have in it to year a little more warm days - Indian summer (Women summer in Russian)

Women Summer?LOL I can probably figure out why they refer to those days like that--all too well, I'm afraid! hahaha

Women Summer (Babje Leto) is the Russian equivalent of the English Indian Summer.
The name has a very long historical roots and refering to the warm spell in a middle of the Fall when all crops had been harvested and women who spent the whole real summer working in a fields of farmlands finaly could enjoy it little bid for themselves.
