Suggest Something Purple & Beautiful to Replace Loss?
Comments (21)Across the street and two doors down a neighbor planted poppy at the end of the sidewalk that leads to his front door. Actually, it is a lot of poppy, probably three dozen. On my way home from work I walk by the poppies and admire them. The bees really admire them more than I do and that is what caught my eyes. I'd like to have a lot more bees, pollinating the flowers and berries in my yard. Each year, I can't wait to see if the poppies will be growing across the street. Each year I walk very slowly by to admire the poppies. I am fascinated by how interesting they look, although I like those that are not orange much more. I also have to admit that I wanted to take a poppy from the neighbor so I could put it in a vase and enjoy it while relaxed in my own home. (I have yet to see him to ask and I've been looking out for several years.) I'm just not comfortable looking at them for too long, less anyone around raises suspicion that I might be up to something drug-related. It's sad that we can't enjoy a flower. This year I bought some poppy seeds that I haven't planted yet. I have the perfect semi-shady spot for them, but I'm too chicken to plant them. I could plant them in my backyard where I have a lot of room and a lot of privacy but I'm not sure I'd be less paranoid. The weather here will be sunny for three days. I have peac-o-c-k orchids and many other seeds to plant for the first time, but I also want to plant my poppy seeds. Maybe I should have a couple of drinks tomorrow, then I will get the nerve to plant them. Did you plant yours poseyplanter?...See MoreAny losses this year?
Comments (23)Yes, we lost around 65 last year. This year, some were new and some weren't. Apache Sunrise, Sailing at Dawn, Mark's Bouquet are the ones I can think of quickly. I'm even losing some of my seedlings that were planted last fall. Michael Miller I've had for years and it died this year. (sigh) I've got to replace the first three, as they were absolutely beautiful for their first year of bloom, performed spectacularly, and then faded away. I definitely do not think it is any fault of the seller or the hybridizer. If my own seedlings are dying, then it has to be one of two things: 1) something in the soil, or 2) the sprinkler system + extreme heat The losses that hurt the worst are those rare prize seedlings scheduled for registration that cannot be replaced. I tried sprinkling Comet around them, but that didn't help. I also have to purchase Michael Miller. I simply can't live without that beautiful plant in my garden. Here, it was snow white without a hint of yellow. I think I'll grow it in a pot, though, so I can keep close watch over it. They can be saved if you dig them up quickly enough. I just had too many other things going on to do that. The "saved ones" from last year are doing fine now with no evidence of crown rot. Nancy...See MoreDo any of you have hearing loss?
Comments (17)I have a serious hearing loss and finally broke down and went to get aids. They actually work pretty good and I have a high frequency loss so it isn't easy to fix. You are supposed to wear them all the time and you get used to having them in your ear but I only wear them when we go out so they bug me most often but if I want to hear what is being said, I need them...and yes they do work. Good ones are very expensive but if you want to hear to the best of your ability they are worth it. They are like little computers attached to your ear. Mine even pick up a signal from the telephone and switch to another frequency so I can hear better...also they have different settings...that are manipulated by a little button on the aid. mine are behind the ear with a little clear tube that goes into my ear with a custom fitted piece .... Here is an example of what happens to me...at my last chemo session, the nurse was getting ready to take the IV's out and clear the lines etc and she said to me...Do you have a dress on....and I said...no I have on pants...she started laughing and all of a sudden I realized that she actually said...Do you have a Grashong...that's the IV line that is permanently inserted in my chest while I am getting chemo. We both laughed pretty good about that one....See MoreHosta losses 2018
Comments (28)2 varieties of varmits (spellcheck telling me I misspelled that - 60 years I've been mispronouncing varmints! No - they are not of the mint family, they will always be varmits, gosh dang it.) have exploded in population this year in my area - chipmunks and rabbits. I have re-located (use your imagination as to what re-locate may mean) 45 chipmunks this year. I actually had someone take 3 of them live - she wanted them!! A chipmunk gnawed a hole in my car's fuel line. Another chipmunk was found dead in the engine compartment by a mechanic after the chipmunk got caught by the ac belt which knocked the belt off. Someone asked me what I have against chipmunks. Did I mention there were FORTY FIVE of them? And I live in an urban area on a city lot. They dig holes everywhere and make an awful chirping noise all day long. Other than that they are kind of cute and my porch cats love watching them....See Moredougald_gw
