Winter Weather Advisory For NE OK & other states

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for several counties in northeastern Oklahoma and some of the adjacent counties in adjoining states.

The Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, through 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 3, 2010.

You can check the linked map to see if your county is included, and you can click on any county on the map to see the forecast.

Brrrrr! Y'all stay warm and safe. Seems like tomorrow might be a good day to stay inside looking through gardening catalogs and talking with your friends online!

I just looked at the NWS map and this Winter Weather Advisory is gone, so I guess the weather shifted and they cancelled the advisory.

We have 4 inches of snow on and it is still coming down. At least it has warmed up to 21Â°.

Our son is on his way here from the KC area. So far, so good.

Susan, Well, I don't think I am qualified to say much about the use of the heater. I hate having a space heater running in a house because I've been to so many housefires over the years blamed on space heaters. However, if it is UL-listed or certified or whatever phrase they use to show it meets the UL safety rules, it probably would be OK. Before you leave it on in the laundry room all night, be sure that there's nothing on a shelf or cabinet or on top of the washer or dryer that can be knocked down onto the heater by a person or pet. I also am assuming you have good, working smoke detectors in the house, at least one fire extinguisher and a 'fire escape' plan that you and Kenna have discussed and practiced, and also that y'all have a designated place to meet outside the house if you both escape a burning house separately. I may sound paranoid, but I've been to enough house fires with our fire dept. to know that the unexpected does indeed happen and the best possible outcome occurs when folks are prepared for the unthinkable. I hope your pipes don't freeze, and I hope your heater behaves itself and keeps the laundry room warm enough to avoid trouble. Inevitably when cold spells like this occur, there are more house fires, and often there also are barn fires and even doghouse fires when heaters or heat lamps ignite bedding or walls that are too close to them or something, so it pays to be extra-cautious. Beth, I'm glad you're alive and well and still here. Wish we had your rain, but I'm pretty happy with the 2.4" that fell here. You're further north so I'd expect your planting dates to be later than ours. We're staying cold later this year and are having to plant later than usual too. If I planted according to our weather history, I'd be dead, or at least my plants would be dead. Last average freeze date based on 30-year average: March 27. Last freeze damage observed last year: May 4th. Last frost so far this year: April 14th. What does it all mean? Well, I don't plant on or before my last freeze date, that's for sure! Our temps are fluctuating wildly and the winds have been awful. We routinely have wind in the 20-40 mph range in spring, but we've had quite a lot in the 40-55 mph range here and it is beating the life right out of my seedlings. I'm ready for lower winds, warmer weather and sunshine. More rain would be nice, but hopefully I can plant before it falls. Tomorrow looks to be a good day if it isn't still too muddy. Dawn

Betty, It is just so bad, isn't it? Just a minute ago I was looking out the kitchen window and my sunflowers were wilting in the oddest way. They are very tall (over 10') but the stems weren't wilted and the leaves weren't wilted.....only the flower petals were wilted. They looked so bizarre. Hopefully they'll perk up after the sun goes down and it cools off. Existing tomato flower blossoms will drop if they are not pollinated within a certain time frame because they do not stay viable for long. However, cool weather will bring you new blossoms that should be viable and which should set fruit. We have several days of cooler weather ahead, so our tomato plants should set more fruit during that time. Dawn

Well, then why in the world did they cancel a Winter Weather Advisory scheduled to last through 4 p.m.? Maybe computer gremlins ate it.

I'd say I'm jealous of the snow y'all are receiving, but...hee hee...I am so NOT jealous. I've already had my fill of snow for this winter and doubt it is done with us yet.

Glenda, I hope your son makes it safely in this weather.

Mandy, I guess the kids are excited about the snow. Ick. I hate all the mess of wet boots and socks and gloves and coats, etc. Now I know why my mom was never as thrilled about the snow as we kids were on the rare occasions that Fort Worth received enough snow to cover the ground.

Have y'all looked at your overnight low temps for the latter half of the week? Some marginally hardy plants may be in a world of hurt. Mulch, mulch, mulch!

Last night I was looking at the forecast on-line and said to DH "Wonder if they will get the snow right this time?" I stood up and looked out the door and we already had about 2 inches on the ground. I would guess that we got a total of 4 inches overnight. It is nice tho, with no ice this time so it doesn't cause as many problems.

We went to church, but we had a very small number there and they shortened our meeting schedule. I came home and swept off the porches and part of the walkway. It is the kind of soft white fluffy stuff that you can move with a broom unless you have walked on it to pack it down.

Our son made it in fine. We probably have 5 inches and we, too, are having some very cold temperatures later next week. I think the snow will still be on which is a wonderful insulation for everything.

Poor DH has been out in this crappy stuff for two days getting a tractor to start. He finally got one going with a rear bale spike on it, so at least he can feed hay. He thinks the internal heater on the one tractor died. This kind of weather brings out the worst in machinery!
