Buying Tomato seedlings:SouthShore (maybe central MA and northCT)

Terrible wind yesterday killed all of my seedlings yesterday. They were in their pots outside getting some sun while I was at work and they were just about ready to be planted after a week of hardening off. Only about 5 or so survived the mess.

Anyway, anyone know where there's a good nursery on the South Shore. Central Mass (around Amherst is also good as I'm there often) Also, hartford area I also frequent now and then. I'd like to buy some seedlings to replace the ones I have. It's kinda pointless to start new plants from seeds because I won't get anything out of them until end of august.

I'm looking for heirloom plants and hopefully somewhat rare ones. Black Krim, Chrokee Purple, etc.

Awww man that sucks...
I am Southern MA but I only have beefsteak and Roma seedlings... You are welcome to some of those I have far to many esp the beefsteak type( can;t recall name right now..)

I have a few extras you are welcomed to, if you want to swing down to northern Rhode Island. I can give you one of each of Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Pruden's Purple, Bloody Butcher, and Aunt Ruby's German Green (and maybe others, I'll have to check). I also have an extra Sweet Quartz (hybrid cherry) for you, and I may send you home with some of the dwarfs I am trying this year (like Lime Green Salad) if I can't fit them in anywhere.

I am just now getting them hardened off, and they are still small because I grew them in the cool basement. They also are just starting to get over the purple stem/leaf thing because it has been so cool for them. I expect them to take off just fine, but they are not really ready for full garden sun yet.

I am on the Cumberland/Woonsocket line, and just over the MA state line, maybe 10 minutes from the Wrentham Outlets on 495 (exit 15). I would much rather give them to you than to all of my non-gardener friends who say they want them then let them die.

I have my fingers crossed - no problems yet - I plant most my indeterminate tomatoes fourteen inches apart and all are staked to a single stem. Have plants approaching 7 feet tall. Have removed all lower one third to half of the lower leaf branches leaving only the fruit branches intact. Number two with the lower leaf branches removed - if i water which wasn't needed much this summer - I never - repeat never spray water on leaves whether tomato or potato - directing only to the base of the plant and ground surrounding. Since tomatoes love carrots I have two rows of carrots planted in the space normally covered by tomato leaves. Will keep posted if a blight appears but so far Im lucky

Looks good moraleagle! You've done a lot of work to get it to that point. However, time will show how fertile your soil really is when you harvest crops. Depending on how much compost you use and how good that compost is will be one of the determinants of your results. Personally I'd be handwatering those plants with alfalfa tea but I'm a broken record on that method so won't say more! LOL I definitely recommend planting a cover crop to later turn over for soil amendment. There are various plants one can use - I used a seed mix available at my local feed store that had field peas, annual rye, and a fescue if memory serves. In warmer climates buckwheat is often recommended. BTW, if you read long enough on this forum you will certainly want to apologize to pnbrown for your outburst. He is one of the more knowledgeable people on this forum. Can't say the same for some of the newer and very opinionated posters here. Just for factual information - not all marigold flowers are edible and also not all marigolds will repel soil nematodes. Do some research and take it from reputable sources.

Bridgewood has become my go-to hosta seller. If I'm not picking something up in the neighborhood swap, I go to Bridgewood (which is close enough to my home and zone). I got an email last week that 2015 spring shipping is starting (to points south of me). The 'ugly plant sale' always has something I can't live without. I also like that he deliberately sells 1 eye plants; I use to infill my hosta plots.

Probably won't help any since you're in PA, but where do you buy your ProMix bmoser? Last year I paid $40 for Fafard 15, in 2011 I paid $28 for an open bale of ProMix and haven't found it under $40 since. Nursery I've been buying from gives me 20% off too (I think they forgot last year) - they're going to get back to me for this year's price. But I only buy 1 bale a year. True Value has it, if you order online by 3/5 you get $10 off $75 order, buy 2 and deliver to store it comes out to $38/bale (I can save 1 bale for next year). I can get it for that from Premier distributor but it's a longer drive. Agway just ordered the HP and is waiting for delivery but they said it would be "about" $40. Jiffy organic starter which I tried last year and things didn't do well in, was $4.82 for 12 quarts at Walmart today. I didn't even look at the MG since I used that 3 years ago and it needed to be screened. Couldn't find the Burpee starter which wasn't too bad. I just went and bought "seed starting mix", not organic, but just peat moss and perlite, on sale and 26% off due to slits in bags, $1.25 plus tax for 8 quarts (15.625 cents/qt) at Job Lot. 7 cf is 209.455 quarts, at $40/bale that comes out to 19 cents/qt and the BX has limestone, wetting agent, biofungicide, and microbiota in it. I'm going to use the cheap stuff mixed with the Fafard and Espoma (bought at going-out of business sale last year) I have left and some pelletized limestone to adjust the pH, just to start seeds but looks like even at $40/bale the compressed Fafard or ProMix is less expensive than buying even the cheapest peat-based mix around, and you don't have to add anything to it. 19 cents/qt = $5.68/cf

I've been yearning for Black Krim ever since I got the seeds 2 years ago. 2 years ago my garden was a swamp so they never wound up fruiting. Last year I was out of the country. This year, I made a system of canals that keeps everything dry (by diverting the runoff from my roof down a hill instead of into my garden) but the seedlings died! I hope I can try one of these salty goddesses.

Sure, either weekend day is fine, or even the next weekend after that would be fine too. Send me an email and tell me how many plants you have room for. I'll reserve them for you if I know you are coming to get them.

Hi there- I'm in Hingham and I'd recommend Lambert's garden center. The folks are nice and there is a nice selection though it's not huge. Also, you might want to try AJ Tomasi in Pembroke. That's supposed to be a much bigger center. I'm going to investigate cherry trees there so can update you if you'd like to report if it's worth the trip.
