To further show why not to plant under maples...

We had two 60+ year old silver maples cut down today, and a third will get cut down in a few days, and after the guys grounded down the stumps, I could see why nothing grows under maples. Take a look:

The photo isn't the greatest, but you can see along the edge of the hole what remains of tree roots, right along the surface of the ground, snatching as much soil as they possibly can. The hole is about three feet deep and six feet wide, maybe wider. I just wanted to share with you what Ken has told us for so long. Maples are nasty trees to grow anything under.
