Monday Afternoon: Latest Ice Storm Warnings

Well, after all-day-long drizzle, we have accumulated a whole 2/100s of an inch of precip. Still, some moisture is better than none at all.

We are expecting around one-half inch of ice here, and if the weather folks are accurate and we get that much, you know we'll likely lose power here and will have tree limbs and trees crashing down.

I've linked the latest maps. There are so many different colors on the forecast map at the bottom of the page that it almost looks like a rainbow.

I'm dreading the next 36-48 hours here, beginning when the temps, which have hovered just slightly above freezing all day, drop around sunset and the drizzle/fog start freezing.

I know some of y'all undoubtedly have ice already, so everyone be careful and stay warm.

How come it shows nothing for the Tulsa area? I just talked with someone there, and school is out early, and canceled for tomorrow.

Nice ice layer everywhere, even on the turbine on top of the house. Only, it is now not level, and makes noise as it turns.

To bad, I don't use a hearing aid. LOL, my husband thinks it isn't to bad, without his on. :)

I didn't realize it didn't show Tulsa and far NE OK, but the reason probably is that it is the Norman, OK NWS page that covers northern, central and southern OK and I think that the Tulsa office covers northeastern OK and parts of Arkansas. So, I've linked the Tulsa page below and hope it helps everyone in that part of the state. Now y'all can look at your own rainbow-colored map. : )

I will be careful but I don't intend to go anywhere. I've been out on the Interstate in a firetruck working accidents (all night long once) and it is scarey with cars slipping and sliding and headed right towards you. Since I'm a cold weather wimp, I stay home in the kitchen during icestorms making hot drinks, snacks and meals for the firefighters. They are happy because they stay fed and I am happy because I stay warm. : )

An update....we are working every chance we get, weather permitting, to get the yard cleaned up. Nolon cuts out the firewood, and I drag the remaining limbs and twigs to one of the several piles around the perimeter of our yard. I keep discovering more breakage that we had missed before. It was a strange thing....many limbs split open, but did not break off. At the One Stop we talked to a couple that lives a few miles from us. He is the same age as I (She probably is too). They have lived here all their lives, but said they never saw anything like the breakage from that storm. They have a large farm, and are busy fixing fences that were downed by falled trees and limbs.(He is Nolon's barber.) I think part of the problem is that it had been unseasonably warm, and the sap was up. And talking about sap, the ends of the broken trunks on the river birch are 'bleeding' vigoriously, and have long icicles hanging down, on cold days. I way be weird, but I ate several of the sap icicles today. They have no didtinctive flavor. :-) I cleaned the debris from the base of the honey locust at the end of the house. The dafodils at it's base are getting ready to bloom! The Cornelian cherry is starting to bloom, too.

Yesterday was my father's 83rd bday. One year ago on his bday, our ice storm hit and by this time of the day, hundreds of limbs were down,(One through the thin tin of our mobile into the living room), the electricity was out and a huge limb bigger than my waist fell into the field where we had parked the cars, just brushing the rear bumper of our son's van. This year it can't possibly be as bad for us as we had a metal roof built over the trailer and a carport built, and there just aren't that many limbs left to fall. We also bought a generator and a couple battery operated lanterns to go with the candles and oil lamp. We survived 9 days in our home because we have a wood stove and propane cookstove, but no electricity because the small generator that we borrowed was only big enough to keep the freezers cold, although DH did disconnect the freezers each evening long enough to pump hot water into the house for showers. I've prepared though. Filled several gallon jugs full of drinking water and brought in 2 five gallon buckets of rainwater to flush toilets if need be. Done laundry, charged cell phone, filled woodboxes. Now need to take a shower and I'll be prepared. Right now here in extreme eastern Ok, it is either 27, 30 or 33 depending on which of the outdoor thermometers is right. There is a thin coating of ice on the porch railing and 3" icicles hanging from the roof, although the sidewalk is still just wet. So far we have only had light rain and right now it has stopped. I pray it stays stopped until DH gets home this evening. George, we also cook on our woodstove a lot in the winter, soups, stews and beans mostly. Thanks for the idea of making bread. I ground the last of my wheat yesterday and will make 18 hr no-knead bread for tomorrow. The recipe is simplicity itself. 4 cups flour (I use a mix of whole wheat, 7 grain, and unbleached white) 1 & 1/2 cups warm water 2 tsp salt 1/3 tsp yeast Mix everything briskly in a glass or crockery bowl, cover with a towel and set on the counter overnight. The next morning beat it down and let it rise again--twice. Then oil your hands good and form it into a loaf and allow to rise for the final time. Cook at 375 til done. Great stuff. Develops a bit of a sourdough taste. The 18 hours is an estimate. How soon it will be ready will depend on the room temp. Everybody stay safe.

Good afternoon everyone----just got in from the yard, boy do I need to rake and trim. C.Myrtles with broken branches, lilacs with broken branches, and I am not sure my cherished Japanese maple will make it this year. I think the long extended drought got my azalea as well. On the bright side, day lillies, jonquils, hyacinths are coming up and looking pretty good compared to what we have been through. My roses are trying to bud out, I could not believe it but I figure I will lose most of the new growth to the elements or my pruning in the up coming month. Thats okay, I am moving most of the plants this year anyway. I am having a new section of fence put in and plan on trying a water feature. Susan and Randy: I bought seeds for butterfly habitat! Okay, so maybe this could be a little addicting but I have visions of a solid bed for the butterflies and hummers in the back yard by my weeping peach tree. I am practicing my poor photography skills to try to get pixs to share. My DH asked me to get somemore Mr. Lincoln roses for the front yard. He loves those roses. And of course his standard coleus for under the oak tree. He loves those the most so I fix him up a little piece of ground just for him. He doesn't actually garden but he loves to drive in the driveway at night and see the coleus waiting on him. Okay, so that was probably TMI but I decided to share. Been looking at the pixs of New York in the snow. Although I still think the ice is much worse than snow. Had relatives live in Maine and they did tell me you have to shovel your roof to keep them from collapsing if the snow is to heavy. Shot I dont even shovel the drive here much less the roof. She also told me she hated the fact you could not grow okra and usually only got a small crop of tomatoes due to the cold weather. Mike Morgan reminded everyone last week we just have 6 weeks to the official beginning of spring. However, I have found over the years that my grandmother told me wait until Easter. She had a theory that we always had a cold front the week of Easter. She had a very green thumb but I dont have that kind of patience. But be prepared Wednesday, we may have some snow, so as the commercial says, "Buy that bread". I just hold my breath that the power stays on, my daughter and grandkids were in Woodward when they lost power for several days, it was really rough on everyone. Glad to meet some old members who are coming back. Look forward to checking the forum daily.

Moni, It was one of those on-and-off warnings. One day they thought it would hit us hard, and then another day they said it would go farther south and then they came back and said we 'might' get 1" to 4" but they were leaning more toward the 1". So, here we sit with over 6" on the ground (I haven't measured it lately) and more falling. The problem is that the forecast models were all over the place, and the meteorologists had to decide which model or models they had the most confidence in. A lot of them chose the wrong one! LOL It is a wet snow and our temps have hovered between 29 and 32 degrees all afternoon, so some of it has melted even as more has fallen. It is quite lovely but I hope it goes away soon. My Dixondale onions ship next week. All the birds in southern OK are currently eating out in the yard.....we're having a wild bird convention with everything from goldfinches (several dozen of them at three finch feeders) to cardinals, blue jays, blue birds, starlings, black-capped chickadees, doves, sparrows, crows, grackles, etc. There are birds everywhere. I need to go outside and let the 'garage dogs' out to run and play. I've been letting them out for about 15 minutes every couple of hours all day long. They like the snow, but they don't like it for long. I'll measure the snow while I'm out. Down in the D-FW area, I believe today's snowfall makes this the snowiest year since sometime in the 1970s. I know sleet and snow flurries have fallen in the College Station, TX, area and than across parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and into northern Florida. They should have real snow in some of those places tonight and tomorrow. Every day it seems like someone in the USA is having snow, and I guess this is the southern states' turn. Dawn

Hi Okiedawn. Don't know where you are in Okie, I am in Haskell County and we are getting ICE. My poor bird feeders have ice hanging off them.When I got out of work my truck was all iced up. I just hope we don't loose electric. Last ice storm we lost electric for 7 days. Not fun. I have parrots,fish,dogs.My parrots need to stay nice and warm. We had to get a generator. We learned now we have blue flame heaters. But no fail every cold spell one of the propane tanks run out. I hope everyone stays safe and warm.

Hi njdjs,

I'm in extreme south-central Oklahoma, in Love County, halfway between Thackerville and Marietta. Nothing here but mist and drizzle, so far, but they're forecasting 0.4" to 0.6" in freezing rain/drizzle/sleet for our part of the state. So far we've recorded 0.04" drizzle, so no problems here. I hope they're wrong. Nine times out of ten the icestorms miss us, but this may be the one that doesn't.

I hope y'all do not lose power too, because that's just plain old inconvenient. (And, of course, for some people with special medical needs, losing the power can be life-threatening.)

We don't have a generator, but other than that, we're in pretty good shape and about as prepared as we can be.

I hope everyone's power stays on, but I know that it is likely some of us will lose power.

I hope all stay safe and warm, too.

I am in the 1/2 inch band also... my first OK ice... at least I have garden mags to look at if I get stuck inside!

I believe my home, just north of Tahlequah, is without electricity as I haven't heard from my wife. My daughter in Siloam Springs, AR says that this storm is a twin to the one we had in 2007. In that storm our home was without electricity for 10 days.

George, My husband said that the news said that Cherokee County had up to 4 1/2 inches of ice and had 15,000 without electricity. Ooh, will she be mad when you get home!!!! When we lived in Alaska, it seemed that my husband went to Seattle, or Hawaii or somewhere warm every winter. I can feel her pain.

First we had rain, then it froze making about a 1/4 inch of ice. Then we got sleet which seem to improve the traction a little. Then today we have been getting snow on top of that. Our electricity blinked a few times in the middle of the day, but so far we haven't had a problem. It was much heavier down your way than it was here. Enjoy Mexico.

We had rain till this evening , now it is sleet. Ground has a nice white layer of sleet on it.

I went out and filled some barrels of water and have them in the greenhouse incase we lose elec.If the elec goes out the water will to. So i have some water out there if i need it. Plus we have about 20 gallons in the house for drinking.

We have a shallow well but i dont have a pump for it at this time.It is on order.I have a generator if i need elec, and several cans of gas. We heat with wood and propane , so we should be warm.

Okiedawn, i didnt think about green tomatoes as in the color when ripe. So i am growing these tomatoes to be picked unripe for frying.I never have picked one unripe for selling. But i'm growing these just for that purpose.Well,That is the plan at this time. We always had several people wanting unripe tomatoes for frying.

George,

Like Carol, I heard that Cherokee County was extremely hard hit. I was trying to type a response to you last night and our internet service went down in the middle of the heaviest sleet of the day, which fell here after 7 p.m. Miraculously, our internet service is back up early this morning, and so am I.

I feel really bad for Jerreth, having to hold down the fort alone in this mess, but you know that she is a very strong, capable and self-reliant woman and she will be fine. (Would you expect any less from your better half?) You, on the other hand, may be in the doghouse when you arrive home from warm and sunny Mexico. LOL (You probably shouldn't say much to her about this trip, except to talk about how very, very, very hard you worked down there while she was home in "a winter wonderland". It wouldn't hurt to mention you were thoroughly miserable about being away from her at such a time and that you wished you'd been home to help her deal with the weather situation.) All I can say is that the timing of this trip worked out well for you, if not for her.

If there is anything that we can do from here to try to make contact with your family or to find out further news for you, let us know. You know that we are your gardening family and we'd help in any way we could. I am praying that Jerreth, the home place and all the family are fine in your absence and that you remain safe and well also. I don't think Ilene has been online since the ice started falling, so I suspect either her internet service is down or the power is out. I hope she and the rest of our gardening family are doing OK in this horrid ice storm.

George, this is the absolute worst ice storm I've ever seen. I know that EMSA responded to almost 500 calls for medical assistance, and hundreds of those were for people who slipped and fell on the ice. In many places, freezing rain and snow fell first and made the outdoors a vast skating rink. Luckily, many of us then received either sleet or snow on top of the ice, which actually helped by covering the slick surfaces with something that gives feet and tires a little traction.

DS was at work at D-FW Airport last night and was responding to a report of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian when his ambulance slid and crashed on a bridge. Then, a city of Grapevine Fire Truck responding to the same accident crashed on the same bridge and then 2 more vehicles crashed. Thankfully, no one was hurt, except (I presume) the pedestrian hit by the original vehicle. I am just glad DS was not driving the ambulance, because the airport is never happy when someone wrecks a vehicle that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Of course, when you have to work in the worst of weather, things like that happen.

We have containers of water stored, although now that the stuff has stopped falling from the sky, I am hopeful we will not lose power. Last night, I thought it was about to go out, but it didn't. I feel lucky to still have power when so many others do not.

I think it is marketing genius to raise green tomatoes for the "frying" market. It wouldn't surprise me to hear that people specifically request them all summer long. That could be a very special market niche that is great for business.

I hope y'all come through the storm OK too.

Our roads are a disaster here, and we won't get over freezing until this afternoon, but no one, to my knowledge, has lost power in our county and all the accidents have been minor ones of the sliding off the road type, so we're truly blessed here in Love County. And, only 0.07" of stuff fell here, officially, so it really wasn't enough to break the drought, but then I didn't think it would be.

Stay safe and warm everyone. I'm gonna go start a "check in" thread so we can keep track of everyone and know that they are OK.

This is the latest mention of the conditions in Tahlequah that I could find online.

As you might notice from the last line of the article, power is out all over the county and expected to perhaps be out for several days.
