HoneyCrisp Apple

My neighbor came over whilst I was out pruning today and asked me where the best local place was to find HoneyCrisp apple trees. After checking inventory printouts from my normal favs, I discovered none was really into fruit trees to speak of. Would anyone have any recommendations for a source reasonably close to south King County?

I got my Honeycrisp from Burntridge Nursery,where I've purchased all my fruit Trees. They can be reached online at www.burntridgenursery.com They mail bareroot at very reasonable costs from their location in Onalaska,Wa. If you can pick up in the Olympia Farmers Market you can call him(Mike Dolan)and he will bring one for you to the Farmers Market. Check them out.

All my trees from Burnt Ridge are doing very well. I recommend them.

msbeekeeper, I see 'honey crisp' being mentioned more and more by the catalogue companies catering to the cold zones, so maybe zone 3 isn't so much of a stretch, particularly a sheltered spot which in general fruit trees prefer. I also read that it's often not the coldest temperatures in the cold part of winter (mid jan to mid february) that harm plants, but often cold snaps that might occur, say in march when the trees are starting to bud out and wake up from dormancy. Or, if the fall weather is unusual and the plants aren't allowed to properly prepare for winter. Having said that, however, good luck with your tree. I've read really good things about the fruit. I have a similar apple (similar in the way that it's a bit later in maturing but stores well) called September ruby and really love the sweet but slightly tart and juicy taste. Glen

Apples when mealy are usually overripe and have been left on the tree too long. Also it can be caused by less watering. Overwatering tends to bring out water spots in the flesh, near the seeds. Most any kind of apple product can benefit by a mix of apple types, and even Granny Smiths are used. I find a Macoun to have the best texture after baking or cooking as the slices dont get as mushy. Here, I have Williams Pride and Red Free that have apples. Both are ripe in mid August, about 2 weeks apart. I also have some very narrow apple trees that have very short upright branches. The two apple types are quite resistant to insect damages, and diseases except cedar rust and sooty mold when nearly ripe. The latter just leaves black bloches but doesn't affect taste. Next year, I plan to spray an organic fungicide during the growing season.

Malcolm, The tree doesn't need to be dormant. I've staked trees that were full of fruit and leaning because of the fruit load. I take a 4ft piece of rebar and drive it into the ground around halfway. Then I take galvanized wire and run it through a section of unused garden hose. Then wrap it around the bottom of the tree, until it straightens up, and secure it to the rebar. The garden hose keeps the wire from cutting into the tree. I've used this method for years, and it seems to be a permanent fix. Make sure you use galvanized wire, or else it will rust. There is no need to stress the tree by digging it up. The tree usually will not produce viable fruit the next year, if you do

Whight's in Lynnwood had 5 gallon honeycrisp apples for $30 I think. They looked to be in pretty good shape, but it's a bit of a drive for you.
