Willhite Seed Company Website 2010 Update

I know a couple of us have been waiting for Willhite Seed Co. to update their website for 2010, and they now have done so.

For those of you not familiar with Willhite, they're a long-time Texas-based seed company located about an hour west of Fort Worth. I guess they're the last Texas-based seed company remaining from my childhood, the others having gradually faded away over the years.

Willhite's specialty is watermelons and other types of melons, but they have all kinds of vegetables and some flowers. You won't find a lot of fancy and exotic seed varieties at Willhites---just proven varieties that perform well in hot climates.

Carol, Wanna race and see which of us gets our Willhite order in first? LOL

You're welcome. I should mention that they give you a lot of seeds for your money. I ordered the smallest seed packets they had for Porter and Porter Improved tomato seed and the packets must have had a couple hundred seeds each.

I've purchased from Porter for as long as I can remember, and if I ever got in a bind when I lived in Fort Worth and needed seed in a hurry, I could drive an hour west to the shipping facility and order right there at the counter and wait while someone pulled my order (quickly) in the warehouse and brought it to the counter in the administration building.

If you like to grow melons, they have the best selection of melons you could ever hope to see in one catalog. Several of their watermelons are particularly wonderful and tasty.

yes someone on here had rec. this company, so I placed my order a couple of days ago. Am eagerly awaiting! went to one of the big box stores yesterday, and Yikes! they DO have seeds out. trouble... but I was good, only bought one pack of Cal. poppies.

I would like to add that I was at the North Olympic Fruit Club meeting when the speaker gave an excellent program on Seed Saving for Gardeners. She passed out Territorial Catalogs and related no negative information about the Territorial Seed Company or any seed company. She said that the seed catalog gave excellent growing information. She was able to show how to read the catalog to tell open pollinated varieties from the hybrids. She did talk about Seminis and Monsanto and how the seed industry is becoming centralized. Of course someone asked the GMO question and the information given was that home garden seed suppliers do not sell GMO seeds. Again, the speaker was educating and training us how to become empowered not only to collect seeds for success, but also to selectively breed the best seeds for our individual tastes, nutrition and seed vigor. She also directed us to the Organic Seed Alliance website for a list of Seminis seeds and some informational articles about the history of the seed trade. We all need to be careful about putting misinformation out on the web. I have been a customer of Territorial Seeds since 1982. For a period in the early '80s I would write and beg them to send seeds to me in Pennsylvania when we lived there. With their seeds and a very small garden I was able to have succes at the local farmers market. I continue to buy from Territorial, but on my own decide whether to select seeds supplied by Seminis. Instead of spreading rumors about Territorial and other seed sellers, support the small breeders who do sell to Territorial or grow our own seeds. Seminis does supply some excellent varieties of seeds. I would think that with all of the bad publicity this would be an opportunity for smaller seed growers to develop new competing varieties. The agricultural universities were major seed breeders and researchers in the past.

Jay, I already have too many. Many, many, many too many. So, I'm going to try to "not" order any from them this year. I don't know if I'll succeed. I've bought so many new ones the last 3 or 4 weeks that my grow list has changed drastically, and I've more or less given up on the idea of restraining myself and instead will just plant oodles in containers. If I use all my 5-gallon buckets and other containers, I can have 150 in containers, and I'll put them on a drip irrigation system with a timer so they'll be relatively easy to care for. Yesterday I was looking at the first seven released winners of the 2011 AAS awards. Wouldn't you just know that two of them are tomatoes! Now, if I see them for sale anywere, either as seed or plants, I'll have to get them.....strictly for research purposes, of course. It's been quite a while since the AAS program produced winning tomtoes. I think Juliet, Jolly and Sugary were the last winning tomato varieties, and that's a few years back. Melons ?? I think I have about 6 of theirs - oh, seven maybe because I bought a Black Diamond watermelon also.

I ordered from them twice last year, and for what they have, their prices are the best. My first order came very fast and was complete except for cowhorn okra. I ordered again a few months ago and although they shipped quickly, they backordered four things (2 herbs and 2 lettuces), subbed one, and just marked two "out". I noticed that they still have those items in their 2010 catalog so I wonder why they didn't backorder those as well. They could have contacted me and I would have chosen an alternate for southern peas since they have many choices.

So I guess I have decided that Willhite offers bargains on many items because they have good prices and generous seed pack sizes, but you had better get what you want early. They ship quicker than anyone else I have ordered from.

I hope that they catch up a little with technology and update their site each time they run out of something, because if I see it on the site, then I assume it is available and that has not been my experience. It looks like they hire someone to update their site and have it ready to go on January 1st, then just stop updates.

Dawn, I have enough southern peas for this year, thanks to you, but I was just buying a back-up supply. LOL
