New to Idaho; new to container gardening

My first season of gardening was spent in balmy south Texas, where I was able to successfully plant some foolproof plants like hibiscus and zinnias, etc. Now I'm in N. Idaho (I'm not sure of the zone...sometimes I see 4, sometimes I see 5, sometimes I even see 3) AND we're renting a home that has lava rocks and fabric tarps covering the gardening areas. So I'm going to start container gardening this spring, but before I begin I'd love some advice on the hardiest northwest annuals and perennials you know of. We have a decent sprinkler system and the area I'll be using faces the west. Thanks for any advice you have. :)
