Looking at Noise and Privacy Barrier Options

Hello - We have just pulled out an old orchard on approx. 1/4 acre. adjacent to our house, creating a large open "side yard" for landscaping. It's created a wonderful blank canvas, but has also removed any buffer to the road along our property line and traffic noise from the nearby highway.

I'd really appreciate suggestions on plantings to create a barrier between the road and our new side yard and existing front yard. Our goals are to reduce noise and increase privacy. The property line is about 200' with lots of depth opportunity, as it's all grass to the road right now.

We're trying to tie the newly opened piece together with our landscaped front yard so the whole lot has some consistency. Current plantings lean to formal and include boxwoods, yews, maples, rhodys, euonymus, japanese holly, and western cedars. Mostly green and low-pollen plantings d/t allergies.

Whatever we plant along the expanse of property line for privacy has to withstand snow loads, as we're in Peshastin and have heavy snowfalls and buildup. The area is in direct, full sun. Our nursery is suggesting a laurel hedge along the entire length. Are there other good plantings we could consider? Thanks for any suggestions!

Cathy
