Identify my perennials + Floppy Day Lillies?

Hi, I'm trying to get some perennials together for a plant swap in two weeks so I went around my garden yesterday morning and found some lilly of the valley (I think), day lillies and a pretty yellow plant I can't identify either on the internet or my garden book so looking for some help identifying...So if you could take a look at my photos and tell me if I got the plant identifications correct I would appriciate not looking like a complete newbie at the plant swap!

Also, my day lilly leafs sort of flopped over when I potted these, and when I transferred about 20 more into my back yard. BIG QUESTION: Can I cut back the leaves almost to the bulb, and they will grow back straight this year (they seem to grow like weeds anyway) or do I have to wait until next year and just have floppy day lillies for this year? :-)

I think the daylilies will recover and their leaves will stand up again. The mystery yellow flower is some kind of euphorbia or spurge, tho not the ones that I have which both grow into bushy mounds. There are thousands of euphorbias in the world, the most well known to us probably being the poinsettia and the crown of thorns. It is an interesting plant. Are you going to the Goffstown NH swap? I'm bringing some of my red euphorbia, if I can find someone to go with me since its almost 1 1/2 hours away from my home.

The yellow flower is definitly euphorbia -- Euphorbia cyparissias or cypress spurge. It's listed as noxious weed in Connecticut and is poisonous if ingested (people may get a skin rash from contact with the milky sap). In Connecticut, it's one of the 61 plants governed by this statement under "Noxious Weeds" from the CT Ag Station:

Prohibited Plant List: As of October 1, 2004, Connecticut state law (Public Act # 04-203)
prohibits anyone from importing, moving, selling, buying, cultivating, distributing, or
transplanting 61 species of invasive plants, regardless of any municipal ordinance to the
contrary. The 61 banned plants are as follows: (and then there's a list, which you can find at http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxwdlx.pl

So I wouldn't take it to the plant swap if you live in Connecticut!

I have been lifting and replanting the wandering daylilies that jump the neighbour's fence into my kitchen garden for the past two years at various times during the growing season. I always get good results no matter when I transplant them. It seems to me these are among the most forgiving plants. I also apply what I read somewhere about these guys liking to be planted close together, so I usually dig a big hole and just dump a bunch of rhizomes without applying any kind of spacing. It is likely that some rhizomes just die, but the ones that don't seem to make up for this nicely. Interestingly, I have left rhizomes with leaves attached in buckets for weeks on end before finding the time to plant them. I periodically drench them in the mean time. They most amazingly survive and don't seem to be bothered by this shady practice. Don't worry too much and just go ahead and dump them if your soil is workable.

Do you have daylilies or true lilies, Gloria? Can you describe your plants or post a picture? "I want to plant more Daylillys in the same area (I should have just let the seeds fall). Both daylilies and lilies are perennial plants, with daylilies growing from a crown, leaves above and roots below, and with lilies from a bulb, with a stalk and leaves above and roots below. In both cases, assuming crown and bulb are OK, the plant is alive and should return next year. The droopy leaves may be what you're seeing because the daylily is going dormant. (Due to drought?) Although it is a bit strange - I'm in PA and I have a garden full of green daylily leaves (and, mostly, brown scapes). Question is, is the crown or bulb OK? Is there anything there in the ground or did something happen, like, say, eaten by a vole or crown rot or something? "I want to plant more Daylillys in the same area (I should have just let the seeds fall). IF I PLANT NEW ONE'S NOW WILL THEY COME UP FULLER NEXT YEAR? IS IT ALREADY TOO LATE TO PLANT? If you'd let the seeds fall, and if they were to germinate, you'd end up with first-year seedlings next year, which might not even flower. If you plant new daylilies to replace the ones you have/had, they'll come up fuller probably only if you plant bigger plants. :) Allentown is probably zone 6B. Regardless -- I've been told that we should try to get our daylilies in the ground by Labor Day. But that's not to say you can't still plant. You might want to do it fairly soon though. Once the ground freezes, you might want to place rocks or bricks close around the crowns of the new plants, to prevent frost heave over the winter. But before you do any of those things, you probably want to check to see whether your scarlet daylilies are in fact still alive. :) ...scarlet lilies. I sure would like to see a picture, if you have one. Maybe they're lily lilies.

I think they'll both be fine together. I have annuals and perennials growing between my tomatoes, they live and bloom in harmony.

Yikes! I actually live in MA, attending the Boston Area swap meet in a couple of wks. I won't be brining the euphorbia though, just in case...Thanks for the identification I appriciate it. As for the day lillies, it's been about 10 days and they're still quite 'floppy' so not sure if they will recoup or not this yr.

Wise decision ... I looked up the Mass list of prohibited plants, and it's there, too (not surprising). Here's the link

(Also, meant to say yes, those are violets in your picture. A lovely clump! They will spread rapidly, and take over a lawn in no time as I discovered at my old house, but they are lovely to have in any area where you WANT them to take over (like a wooded glen).

JD, you can cut off the top half or 2/3 of the daylily leaves... digging them up was a bit of a shock and the leaves are losing water faster than the disturbed roots can provide it, is all.

Thanks for bringing up prohibited plants. I just ran off the NH list. Glad to see that burning bush is on it. Those things self seed like crazy! I remember when the first lythrum appeared here. I didn't know wht it was. If only I'd known and stopped to pull it up...

Hi,

Thx everyone for your help, esp the invasive plant list! Will trim the day lillies tomorrow, looks like rain so that will give them plenty of water to regrow.
