Dwarf and mini hosta in pots or bowls

The mini hosta take special care to avoid being overwhelmed by the big brothers all around them. I would like to see what sort of container you use for your small fry. Do you place them separately or with other mini hosta, or maybe a companion plant?

What container do you like the best? I have two round fairly shallow bowls where I keep 4 and 5 hosta. Plain containers really. Some photos I saw in the Hosta Library had very fancy containers.

Can you show off your minis, and also what bowls or containers work the best for you? There is HostaHillbilly's thread about his Hacienda bed, and Myrle's fantasy small hosta planting too. Don't want to step into that smaller world, but just do the container bit here.

#1..contains Atom Smasher (biggest, and from there clockwise around) Silver Threads & Golden Needles, Snow Mouse, Cracker Crumbs, and Pure Heart (another Mouse Family hosta).

2. ...contains Pandora's Box @ the 9:00 position, and 2 Tiny Tears (opposite one another @ 6 and 12), and Dixie Queen @ 3:00.

The first one has a seeping unglazed terra cotta jug in it, which puts water at the roots of the hosta. This is new to me, but it seems to keep them moist near the roots. I now keep a lid over the top to keep skeeters from breeding or dirt falling in, or insects. I have another smaller such seeping pot to place in the middle of the #2 bowl. Just haven't gotten around to it.

BTW, placing Atom Smasher in there was a mistake out of fatigue, I will replace him with my small venusta, more in line with the other minis in that #1 bowl.

Someone posted a fabulous picture of Blue Mouse Ears filling a pot. This is a poor imitation of that presentation. Does anyone else remember that pic? I haven't been able to find it.

I went and got my wide bowl pot all ready and ran out to pick up some minis. Didn't have any at the nursery and I came home with a biggie in a 5 gallon pot and a concrete angel. lol. Then I was going to repot the biggie into a larger pot, but it was so much work getting it out of the 5 g. pot I said "no way - I'll plant it". Then when it took me 3 hours to dig the hole in the hard, dry dirt with a post-hole digger, for which it took me 2 days to recover: well here we go with minis in a pot gardens again.

Now you'uns got my juices flowing again. A month ago I was at a local that had several mouse ears and some others. Might just go out and peak.

Oh well, I get my ss check in a week so maybe my budget won't suffer so badly. Shame on you people for throwing temptations at me like this. lol

Well the pics can be deceiving. I believe it to be several plants in one container. There were 2 completely different plants last year when I got it in the planter they had it in. 1 did not come back. I believe that was the Mama Mia. It is at least 4 maybe 5 years old. I am going to put a picture up of the what I believe to be Hope with my hand as a comparison... Then one of my albomarginata, one of the baby Fortuneia whatever, and one of the blue mouse ears.. You can clearly see, it is a mini/dwarf hosta. Sorry I have to do this in several posts, it won't ever take my html codes. :(

Thanks for posting pics and the comments. critter-ritter, do those mice ever look happy - nice. Gesila, you've shown some nice sized first year plants. Yes the roots will mingle just like they do in the garden. I have my pots on the deck which is bright shade and filtered over most of it, to a bit of it that is full sun for a couple of hours in the afternoon. The pots get a bit of water every day - I could probably go a couple of days between water - but hose is handy. andi and Gesila, I've only overwintering hosta over one winter, so I'll defer to those experts to correct what I add. In general, you want to keep them cold (no thaw and refreeze cycles) so most find shade on the north side of a structure. You also want to prevent the crown from sitting in water, again many tip pots on their sides so melting snow doesn't accumulate. Also a potting mix that drains well is important. I stored my pots in my unheated three season porch - and all survived. Do a GW search for "overwintering hosta in pots" should give you some good input. How deep a hypertufa trough to over winter minis, mid-size hosta?

I have not had great luck overwintering hostas in my hypertufa pots, of which I have many, in different sizes, some are even bottomless in my attempt to ensure good drainage, which is super important in the winter and early spring. Most of my hostas that stay in the tufa pots have survived the winter, but often they are damaged and come back smaller, depending on the severity of the winter. These are pots I just leave out, exposed. The things that come though the winter the best for me ( of my potted ones) are the ones that are completely buried so that the level of the soil in the pot is at the same point as the level of the soil in the ground. So I am guessing that the freeze thaw freeze thaw thing that happens to unburied pots is a big part of why those ones get damaged in my yard. ..that, in combination of not being too wet. Just my opinion! THe ones I bury are just in plastic nursery liners- I do not have the energy to bury anything in a hypertufa pot. The hypertufa itself does fine over the winter...I don't do anything to protect that.

Oh yeah. I got two more Masquerades to try my luck at growing. So far I've killed all but 1 of the 4 previous Masquerade. Munchkin, the green Masquerade, is growing like crazy, no problems. Something about me and the white centered hosta....must not hold my mouth right?

Yet, I am growing 5 White Dove and all are doing beautifully with the wider white margins. Even Little Jay with its white leaf and bluegreen margins is doing fine. But not Masquerade! Which is the first smaller hosta that I fell in love with. Well, if these latest two don't make it, I'm not getting another. Maybe a LOOKALIKE. (that's what lookalikes are good for)
