May i ask a question about seedlings?

Hi guys,

Hey,i have listened to you about seedlings,being green and all,not worthy of keeping most of them, i have never really paid to much to my seedlings,just pull them and toss.

This year ,since i have been around you all, i have paid more attention to them,i have one that is a real pretty blue,don't know the parentage,and i have several that are gold(yellow),is this unusuall?,yellow ones i mean, no one ever mentions the yellow ones,are they also,throw aways?

Oh, yea, i also have a seedling that has varigation in the leaves,still just a little thing,throw away?

I am watching the little blue one,i did pot it up, and the little varigated one.I have no way of knowing who they came from.

Any way, just something i was thinking of while transplanting some of mine.

Garden still looking good in zone 5,,happy,happy,happy.

ps.after reading some of the latest postes, please forgive me my spelling and my grammer,i do not,nor have i ever claimed to be an expert in either feild,as a matter of fact,if not for spell check,i would qualify as a first grader,well, maybe not that high. :0)

Keep any baby that makes YOU happy! Who cares if it is "worthy" in somone elses opinion?

As far as yellows, yep they happen. I would guess that 95% of seedlings will be green, 3% blue and 2% yellow. The varigated one is much more unusual unless you have a streaker that sets seeds nearby. I would definitely hang onto that one no matter what.

Take good care of them, it is a great way to expand your collection!

I appreciate your advice,i have them potted up,i do Love the yellow ones,i found one green with pointy elongated leaves, it is shapped nice, so i will keep that one also.

Solana asked in an old post if anyone had read "Lad, a Dog" but no one responded. The author, whose house may have been haunted by a dog, was Albert Payson Terhune, the author of many touching books about dogs. Terhune was famous for his rough collies but a large, short haired mongrel named Rex was seen by several guests laying at Terhunes feet ... after the dog had died. On at least two occasions, guests later in the evening asked about the devoted dog who so lovingly stayed by his master. Terhune was astonished, as he never saw the ghost himself. But when guests would later decribe the dog down to Rex's scared forehead, there could be no doubt as to what dog had been seen resting at Terhune's feet. Another of Terhunes indoor dogs, Bruce, always detoured around Rex's favorite resting spot. Bruce would be called, and everytime, the dog would make the strange little detour as if avoiding an invisible object. For the four years Bruce out-lived Rex, he always went around Rex's spot. I have a ton of cedar, both on fencing and wrapping the walls and posts in my outdoor sun room. I did all my fences with a product called SuperDeck Red Cedar. When I did my sun room, I called the spa maker to try and match the color they used around the tub and they use Sickens so I switched. I have about 100' of cedar lattice from HD, about a 100' of my own design cedar/copper fence, two pergolas, an arbor, plus the sun room that I use all the same stuff on now. I sell many pieces. If I didn't, then my house would soon become over-crowded, and besides, I need the money in order to finance my mosaic addiction. I do not like the pricing process and I don't really enjoy commissioned pieces; I like to come up with the work myself and then have a stranger come along and appreciate it. However, often when I do a commission, then it opens up a whole new concept for me. For example, as a birthday gift, a group of women ordered a birdhouse for a co-worker who loves martinis. That was fun! I found plates that had martini pictures in the center and the word martini around the edges, and then I found glass drink stirrers with a stuffed olive on the end to use as the perch. Back to pricing, too many artists and crafters practically give their stuff away. Too often people expect you to. At festival booths, many times we hear comments from one shopper to another, such as ''Why you can go to Michaels and buy the stuff and do it yourself!'' We don't get drawn into those discussions. Hahaha. Yep, go buy the nippers and grinders and ring saws and grout and glue and sealers and storage shelves and see how quickly your outlay adds up. One thing we have done at festivals is, if a piece doesn't sell, we mark it UP and often then it does sell. The ''cost of materials'' formulas for pricing don't work well for us. For example, if one buys an ugly little thingie for 50 cents and embellishes it with a broken plate that cost 50 cents, and creates a beautiful unique item, then how can one apply a formula such as cost of materials times 2 or 3 or even 5 to come up with a price? Same with paintings; it's impossible to apply a ''cost of materials plus'' pricing formula there as well. The only formula that I can think of that might work in most cases is the ''so much a square foot'' formula. That would work for larger mosaic items like fireplaces, counter tops, backsplashes, etc. and would also work for paintings. For smaller items, you could apply that formula and then add extra cost for the difficulty involved.

And I forgot to add... it is also fun to name them for a family member or special interst of yours. I have seedlings I've named for my kids, my DH and my home town!

Sure, if you have the space, let them grow to maturity so you can really see what they have to offer.

we arent here to grade your spellin or ritin... forget that nonsense ...

when growing any amount of seed... say 1000 seeds ... indoors in winter .... they are all precious ... then 4 months later... what the heck do you do with them ... since done well.. they can be full sized plants .... all of a sudden the ARENT all precious.. lol ...

ergo .... get rid of 950 before they are 4 leaves .... 0r 990 ....

upon study .. anything that is special .. for whatever noted quality ... keep it.. see where it goes.... but would you really need 950 plain green hosta??????

I have never grown hosta from seed,never found a need to, but i am getting very interested in a lot of things since i found all you guys.
I guess i can grow seed during the winter is that right?Do i need a grow light,special growing things?,or, can i just grow them in my kitchen?,in a tray?I bought some seed from e bay last week,h.Queen of the Seas', i do know they will not be true to the parent, but i was hoping more for size.So much to learn, i need to be younger,lol
And no,i do not want 900 green hosta,ha ha

Hey Carol

If you want seeds - just ask! I'm sure there are lots of people around here that would send them to you for free (or posteage) so you can learn. We all want you to have fun with this! I can probably send you some - let me see what the deer have left me, the stupid hooved devils denuded a bunch of my plants last night :-(

As far as growing instructions, there are as many ways to start them as there are hosta growers. Truth be known, tse seeds have sprouts in them that WANT to grow. We just need to provide an opportunity for them.

This is a little yellow seedling from my garden. When I looked closer at it today, I noticed that it is a lighter yellow in the center (don't know if you can make it out or not.) She has a deep violet bloom and is 2 years old. Her name is Sunshine, and it will be fun to see how she develops. I also went out and pulled up a bunch of green seedlings after reading today's post, and they were really tenacious with their well established roots!!!! Who says these little guys are fragile!!!! :) Mary

hosta seeds are better when they are fresh from this year so wait a while before buying it- those that available now most likely from last year season- might not have good viability.

I have had very good results from just saving seeds over winter,and then planting them in pots,the following spring. You don't have to set up lights,and fret over them when they don't sprout when you think they should. Mine were free OP seeds from my own hostas,so,if they didn't sprout,you're not out nothing,except a bag of potting soil. All my Cinnamon Sticks seedlings,and now Korean Snow seedlings were grown this way,and they are doing fine. But seedlings take a long time to mature,because they are so small when sprouted,so it takes awhile for them to amount to anything. it's worth a try! Phil

I have plenty of seeds,well, i will have,i have over 1700 hosta in my yard, i just never paid any attention to seeds, i just let them go, either pulled them and tossed, or gave them away.
The ones that germinated, have very deep roots and are strong as oxen. :0)

The seeds i bought on e bay may not be any good then, i bought them a couple of months ago,last years huh?

I am excited to start some now from seed,just to see what happens.

I just got done reading Bob;s information on growing seeds,
OMG,can you imagin how much fun that is,is he a hybridizer? ,what would you do with that many seedlings?
Some -most-of them- were very pretty,not just plain green, matter of fact,did i even see any green ones,lol

I love you guys,thanks for all your help over this summer,i have learned SO much.
