Digitalis Foxy--how tall and how wide, really?
Comments (2)Sue: thanks for your reply. I ended sowing some baby-blue-eye seeds in the border area, just in case the digitals don't fill out as much as I remember. Last sprig I had one Foxy plant that was an offshoot that wintered over and ended up being 6 feet high. The six pack I planted in March was good too--but more like 4 '. So you are correct--digitalis is sensitive to it's growing conditions. I have some d. ferruginea that better put out something this coming spring. I have 9 plants in two locations (since March), taking up lots of space and water and doing their biennial thing. Those stalks better be fabulous! Santa Barbara real estate being what it is, I cannot afford to subsidize non-performing perennials. Cheers! Kristine...See MoreBest teensy really blue hostas?
Comments (22)KEN: Hahahahahahahaha. There, got that off my chest. The Chinese guy is a boor. His 20-something "son" (who I suspect is an illegal tenant, probably sleeping in the attic, which is prohibited) litters all over the gardens, sidewalk, and lawn with disgusting cigarette butts. Who wants to look at those? Every Friday night, when I'm trying to enjoy the Sabbath, I have to listen to a knock-down, drag-out fight through the wall. He is screaming at his girlfriend or someone else, while I am trying to have a peaceful evening. He keeps putting unwanted cheap looking trashy stuff in an otherwise utterly beautiful and costly garden created by yours truly. What's to like, Ken? Here is an approximation of the latest cheap looking bottle--or urinal, who knows--he put into the garden. The hysterical thing is, he laid it on its side just like the white Garden Cat vase is lying, but THAT is on its side for a totally different reason--the freeze/thaw cycle. And, I live in QUEENS. Not Manhattan. We actually have trees, grass, and flowers in Queens. This is a view of one of the courtyards in my complex, plus some unoccupied rooms (got the pic off a real estate broker site): Does that look like a slum? As for the "unwashed humanity", I don't think many of them would pass muster by our co-op board, who has to approve of you before you can purchase. My immediate community is really nice, like a little village. You want to see unwashed humanity, try downtown Flushing, Queens, with its hordes of illegal Chinese immigrants, or Jamaica, Queens, with the people who toss trash out their windows onto the ground (just like back home!), or similar neighborhoods where the locals don't have respect for their environs....See MoreQuarantined Blue Angel puts up scape
Comments (6)Now I can smile about the beautiful Blue Angel and not feel sad about terminating it while it is trying so hard to live. Yes!!! The Agdia ImmunoStrip tested NEGATIVE FOR HVX. There was a control line, but there was no test line. As advised to save two strips and not test each plant separately, I combined the leaf samples from Winter Snow and Blue Angel, the two Lowes plants with a high potential for bringing HVX into my little bit of Eden. I figured the three plants located in the area (Fragrant Queen from PDN was the third innocent party) would have to be removed if any of the Lowes plants tested positive, so any results showing positive would get the whole bunch yanked. Actually RoundUp applied and neutralized as much as possible before removal in the fall, along with the soil. Now life is so much simpler. I do not have to do all these unpleasant unhappy things to my garden. I can go touch the plants, look at their new growth and the backs of the leaves, enjoy the scapes, and check for damage from insects or disease. Well, we have a second chance with my in-the-ground trio, and I may opt to put more in the ground now as well. These three are growing very well. They emerged much later than the ones which overwintered in pots, and so I hope will keep growing longer in the fall as well. Maybe they won't exhibit signs of heat dormancy. They did not last fall, still looking good when we came back south the day before Thanksgiving. And I still have 4 test kits for HVX to use before May 2013, and I will test before I worry so much next time. Whew! That was a squeaker....See MoreBlue Angel vs. Blue Umbrellas
Comments (11)Heck, Don, what's another hosta more or less among friends? Go for it. But I was listening to your reason to make another choice. if they HAD been alike....my candidate for one that would also be different from Blue Angel. And that is Clear Fork River Valley. It is far removed from the sophisticated graces of Blue Angel, with its orderly tailored look. It is rough, Rambo with a three day beard, fast growing, apparently slug proof, a rather roundish leaf instead of the pair of blue angel wings. If you check the Hosta Library, the color of mine is like the 3d picture from the top, decidedly a blue tint. Nothing smooth about it. Crinkled up as much as broccoli! And mine is entering its 2nd year here in this picture. So. yeah, if Blue Umbrellas had been just like Blue Angel, ........ So....why not get Clear Fork River Valley too? Have all three. You know what they say about good things coming in threes.......See Moreluvtosharedivs
