Wondering what your all time favorite hosta is. You can only pic one... not one mini, one blue, one this or that. ONE period.

Can't wait to see what is your fav...

Enjoying nature, I never have tried pruning hollies to a certain size. I let mine get to the full size and shape that they're meant to attain. You probably could prune them to any size and shape you want, but after a few years you end up with big thick branches with leaves sticking out of them and it looks unnatural unless you like tightly pruned hedges. I still can hear Neil Sperry's voice in my head on his radio show saying that if you want to prune shrubs into square green boxes, why not just go out and build a plywood box and paint it green. (grin) Who am I to defy Neil Sperry and try to prune my hollies to a certain arbitrary size? So, mine were spaced as far apart as they needed to be in the first place because I had a good idea how big they'd get and they are fine now---roughly 12' tall and 5-6' apart. Those are the Burford hollies on the south side of the house. They shade the south porch from the summer sun, which is precisely what I wanted them to do. On the east side of the house, which is where the front part of the wraparound porch and the front door is located, I planted Dwarf Burford hollies in 2011 and they seem more like the size you'd want. I wanted a naturally shorter shrub there so we could sit on the porch and look out into the yard somewhat at least. Mine have really had to struggle through drought (i think I planted them in April of 2011 and it stopped raining soon thereafter and didn't rain for 90 days that summer) so they have grown relatively slowly for hollies, but now are about 5' tall and about 3-4' wide and they haven't reached their max size yet. I expect them to top out at around 8' tall and 4' wide, but time will tell. They are a loose informal hedge, which fits with our country Victorian house....all relaxed and sort of cottagey. It is your house, though, and they are your shrubs, so you should plant what pleases you and maintain them in the way that makes you happy. I'm a firm believer that a person's landscape plantings should reflect their tastes and anyone who doesn't like it can just go mind their own business. Well, except, I still have Neil Sperry's voice in my head and I agree with his comments about picking the right shrub to begin with so you don't have to prune your shrubs to an unnatural size or shape. That's just me, though. Some people love formally pruned hedges and they should have what they want. All those years of reading Neil's newspaper columns, his magazine and his books when we lived in Texas (as well as listening to his radio show and attending his Garden Shows) trained me to be a certain way as a younger gardener, and I have his voice in my head the way I have my dad's voice in my head, even though he is long gone. Scott, We have native possumhaw hollies and I love them, but they sucker like the devil and we've got one in the front yard we're going to take out. I hate to take it out because it is the bird feeder tree where we hang the feeders, but we'll just move them somewhere else. It just suckers endlessly and I'm tired of dealing with it. We'll leave the ones on the edges of the woods because it doesn't bother us if they form thickets, and the birds love the berries in late winter and early spring, though they won't touch them until all the other berries are gone. When the cedar waxwings are migrating through in spring, they get pretty much drunk on those fermented possumhaw berries. I feel like pretty much everything we plant has one poisonous part or another, so I plant what I want. If kids are around, I keep an eye on the kids, and teach them not to eat plant parts without checking with an adult first. No child has poisoned themselves on anything we grow yet, so I try not to worry about it. (And I grow several types of brugmansias and daturas, but the spiny seed balls are so hideous that I don't think I have to worry about kids getting hold of them and accessing the seeds.) When we were kids we ran all over the neighborhood and played and we all knew to go home immediately when our parents turned on the front porch light. None of us died or ever got seriously injured or ill. It was a wonderful childhood, and we had a woodland, a neighborhood pond, rocky cliffs to climb, etc. I appreciate that we got to be kids with no one hovering over us too much. Times have changed. And, just so you know, most poisonous plant parts have a bad taste, making it less likely kids will eat them. Or, they will cause you to throw up if you ingest them, so kids are not that likely to eat and swallow them. (However, some dogs will eat anything, so that is one thing to keep in mind if you have dogs.) It is a sad commentary on life in this century that kids cannot play tag. No wonder so many children have a weight issue. It is hard to stay physically fit if you cannot do anything because you might get hurt. That is just sad. Dawn

Make sure you check the depth of the cooktop/rangetop and the clearance requirements of both the top and the oven. You might also need to build a support platform if it's a slide-in cooktop (aka rangetop). Sealed burner units might be "thinner" so you'll have more flexibility with those typically but then you give up nice open burners. BTW, I had to modify a cabinet to make more room for the wall oven which wasn't a huge issue. The problem was the cabinet doors were then too big and no way to cut them down to size since they are paneled and oak finish. Looked around and found that Home Depot carries several brands of cabinetry and I was able to find one that was a very close match in style to what I have. Gave them the dimensions I needed and a week later I was in business. In the 9 years since that was done I have not had even one person notice that those two doors are not original. I even asked a carpenter friend of ours which doors are different and he could only narrow it down to 3 sets because they looked newer. Look around, you might just find you can do what you want pretty easily.

Just about the only thing that makes that happen is a very good and recent sale in the "neighborhood" of a house comparable to the one being appraised. Sometimes you'll have a buyer come in with cash (as from an inheritance or divorce settlement) who doesn't bother to get an appraisal. That sale can set a new high---although it is usually used as a fourth comparable since that doesn't represent the "typical" buyer. Strictly defined, a "neighborhood" is the either in the same subdivision or within one mile of the subject. Ideally the sale should have occurred within the previous six months. However, in rapidly changing market conditions some lenders ask for comps within three months. There are all kinds of exceptions to this guidline; for example, when you are in a subdivision that covers several miles and the only comps are within the s/d but beyond a mile. And a comp in the same s/d is better even if it is a mile or two away than a house just outside the s/d boundaries that is only a half-mile away. Things like s/d amenities that would attach to the subject but not the comp "outside the gates" so to speak, even if those gates are only metaphorical. When you have semi-rural properties or areas with no subdivisions it is permissible to go further away and farther back in time for comparable sales. It's very possible that someone bought a house a few miles from you that was in some way very like your house---and bought it within a few months of your own purchase. It's all about group behavior and not individual actions... you look at trends in sales and what other people have bought recently in the same area, try to find sales that match your subject best. When you have no subdivision, or you're in a rural area or dealing with unique properties, often the most difficult task is to identify the most important feature of a home---the number of bedrooms? the tennis court? the five-car garage? the finished basement media room? That's why Realtors are such wonderful resources for appraisers---if they will use their knowledge. They know what is selling houses in their area. Sometimes it is a school district---I've seen people pay $300K for a two-two in a highly desirable elementary school district. That's what makes the business interesting, there is something different with every assignment.

Great question. ..I can only relate what I've read since I haven't actually ever did a test. I've read that detergents with an activated bleaching system work at warm and even cooler temps, but once temps reach 120 degrees f and above they will whiten ata faster rate. Sin I ccan't remember where I read this, maybe in ine of my laundry books, AW or online somewhere. Lol. I do a lot of reading. I have noticed though that if I wash say white vintage linen at normal tap hot temps of 125 the stains are removed and they look noticablely whiter, but when I boots the temp to 140-150 they are brilliantly white. This past spring when my son moved in his white tees were grey, I washed a number of times in Tide Bleach, they came cleaner, but again I boosted the temp to 140-150 and there is where I found the white socks. This is why I wash my whites on normal hot tap, and than I boost up the temp for the bleach. But this is no scientific test by any means.

I think maybe Majesty (but that is only going to last a few days)I really don't have much of a picture because I just got mine and I had to bleach it to kill nemes. It has leaves but only a few.

I'll play. I like a lot of my hostas, but the one I love the most is Blue Mouse Ears. It is new for me this year, but the thing is just so gosh darn cute, for a plant, and the flowers make it more adorable. I have others that are bigger, flashier, or whatever, but the cuteness factor of BME is what makes it my most favorite.

What you can't see in a pic. is the incredible substance of this one--it almost seems artificial!

Now--come back and give us an option of at least one more and maybe even two more and it could get even

I have many #1s.... BUT, if I were to start out with a brand new Hosta garden today the very first one I'd buy would be 'June'.... oh wait, perhaps that should be 'Blue Mouse Ears'.

Aw, shucks, maybe it should be 'Rhino Hide'... no, hold on, it'll be...... well, you get the idea.....

OK, by your criteria, it being the first one to come to my mind, I would have to say Fire & Ice.
Don't hate me for saying it, lol. I know it's on many people's lists for loser hostas.
But this hosta is sweet and has looked nice all summer. I look at it every time I walk by and and it gives me joy.

First one that comes to mind, hmmn, we've had a tough weather here year, too much rain, not enough sun. I'll go with an oldie that has hung tough all year.
Spring coloring on Sagae is nice.

Ok Ken, is your hosta wearing a blueish purple baseball cap? (feeling silly, but this is drivin me nuts!)

North53, help me understand why Fire and Ice is on the list of 'loser hosta?' or maybe someone who has it on that list can tell me why?

I like that blue mouse ears too... can they take my cold here? I really need to get some smaller fellas. Where do you get those nice tags? Would they hold up thru my winters here in WI?

Gotcha!!! We do like to reign in anyone even slightly predisposed to being addicted to hosta!!!
It's our mission--the more folk out there lovin them, the more folks we have to chat and 'talk hosta' with
which in turn, feeds our addiction! See what I mean? ;O)

Welcome to our world--the first day, of the rest of your life, *ensnared* and lovin it--I knooooowww!!!

Now, about the JOTN ('Jewel of the Nile') I would advise anyone getting one, to see it 'unstable' first
if you can. Not all of them will do that 'unstable' thing of striped leaves, or 'harlequin' leaves as I like
to call it!! If the one before you is doing it, and doing it pretty consistently, all over the plant, then
I'd take a chance. I guess they do have a reputation of reverting back to all-yellow, but thankfully, mine
is holding on!!

'June' is always a winner! There are some better than others but they all are very lovely, I think!

'Sagae'--you can't lose with that one!!!

Now--can I show you some more of my 'favorites' or are we still having to abide by 'the rules' you've
first laid out?? :O) hehehe

Well--as I understand it, a hosta that is 'unstable' means it will not remain true to it's original design!
Someone more 'professional' can correct me, and better state it, I'm sure.

IOW's, If the hosta is 'stable' it is true to it's design, like June for instance, and it will maintain a very
predictable green margin, center color etc., and it remains consistent when divided. If it tends to get a
leaf with half of it green, half yellow, maybe one green margined and one light around the margin
consistently, it's considered an 'unstable' form!

JOTN CAN just maintain it's green margin, but when it doesn't, it seems to be more highly favored
by folks like me and the potential for that particular hosta, is to be 'unstable'---again, hopefully!!! :o)

If a division of it goes all yellow, it should be removed or it can revert completely to the more stable form,
named 'Dees Golden Jewel'! It will have the form of JOTN without the instability, I think!

I think streaked hosta are also considered unstable.

Anyone--will you jump in and make this clearer with less words, please--ken???

IMHO!! BTW--'Guardian Angel' is also a sport of BA!!

I just got Earth Angel, too. Hope it will be as pretty as yours' when it grows up! And I agree, Blue Umbrellas is one of the all-time greats.

OH WOW!!! After seeing all of the great pics that have been posted? Hmm, hard to say, Did you say that we had to be able to grow it well? I may have skipped over that part or hoped that we could grow it well? My choice would be Great expectations IF I could grow it to a HUGE plant, 10 years old and looking like TC this year (the maple sucked the life out of it so I finally moved it). the only one for this year would be? Inniswood!! just love that plant!! and it really glows, I like June (way too much), but it doesnt surpass Inniswood this year.

June is my alltime favourite but I'm really fond of the previous posters favourites too, all of them, even north53's Fire and Ice, such a pretty hosta but after losing 5 of them I doubt I'll be trying that one again. They just disappeared.

All of my hosta are either new or recently transplanted from lives of neglect, therefore my current favorite may well be temporary.

So far, my favorite is Guacamole. It quickly grew into a substantial plant, held up all season and I love the colors and pattern.

Year after year, I love my Shade Fanfare...one of my first hostas. There are more exciting ones in my garden now, but I always look forward to seeing this one leaf out.

Looking at my garden from across a pond, Fragrant Bouquet lures you to walk across the dam -- and when you catch its fragrance, you're hooked! The fact that no critters like its leaves is especially compelling at this time of year.
