This picture shows more of the plant, including the leaves that are turning yellow.

On the green side: To me, it looks like a physical injury. A couple of weeks ago, I commented that some big critter had walked through my Invincible and f. aureomarginata. I went out to look again, and it looks the same.

It could also be some kind of cut worm. It's pretty late for that, so I wouldn't put much stock in that idea. Spring is the primary time for them. Besides, they are gone in a few days.

On the yellow side: It could be just going downhill because it's September next week. Mine look terrible.

It could also be southern blight. If it's that, you will see little orange balls about the size of bb's in the soil next to the plant. Just pull on the leaves and see if they come off easily. Look for that and report back.

highly doubt SBlight.. up here in snow country.. in 20 odd years.. i only saw it once in my garden ... possible.. but not probable ...

lets be clear ... ITS FALL .. in the great white north ... they are all going down.. and soon ...

too tall ... to dark .. look like the petioles hyperextended.. cant think of the term now ... and as the light intensity of fall .. and shorter hours.. it fell over ...

or something sat on it ...

it will be near dead to teh ground in 30 days ... so be it...

and do look closely ... its all old large leaves ... there are planty of fresh new.. second flush leaves it the center... the water issue salved itself ... which just leaves old leaves falling ....

i am glad you are observing.. and seeking knowledge ... what i see though... just doest worry me ...

G is a near full sun plant.. up north ... how many hours of sun does your get????

It is planted in a large bed in the southeast corner of the yard, under a 30+ year old oak with a six foot stockade fence approx 5' to the south and east of it. On the good side, due to a now gone neighboring tree, the east branches of the oak are stunted, so this is the sunniest spot in the bed. I looked at my plant tags from this bed and of course that is the only one I don't have so I don't know where I got it and what planting instructions it had. I wanted a large hosta with lighter leaves to lighten the back corner of the bed.

I could move it to the west corner of a south facing bed, this corner is protected from late afternoon sun. Or to a still to be created hosta bed I am planning for the north side of the house on the east side of a 30+ year old birch. In mid July it gets 7 hours of morning sun.

P.S. Ken, please don't rush my seasons. The kids may be in school but mentally for me, fall does not start till September 20th. LOL!

Hostas don't always go by the calendar. I am getting Fall color on several already, and lots of drying leaves too. To me, it looks like something sat on it too.

Just leave it alone, and look forward to enjoying a great plant in Spring. No need to move it, as it looks like a very healthy happy Guac. otherwise.

bk, you are right, so not ready for the end of summer up here in the north.

Ken, I promise I will not move it, and will water more next year...I am also lazy. Any day now my DH will be pulling the snow blower out of the shed, firing it up and putting it in the middle of the garage. He has already told me that since the neighbor is no longer available to plow the drive he will be getting a more powerful one.

He gets a bigger snow blower, I get wonderful hostas!

We've had a cool, wet summer and my hosta are not looking tired, slug eaten, yes, but not end of summer tired. My Guac is in a lot of shade and it is still looking good and blooming at the moment. I'd say your plant was tromped, tramped, or otherwise trodden.

Kathy, I can still see it's pretty flowers from the house. Up close, not much is different. I am uploading pics I took this morning of the plant.

tj, could be something is sleeping on it at night. We have that happening with rabbits in other beds. Since it is in a far corner of the yard where there is no traffic I am sure it would have to be an animal. But the largest animal I see in my yard are rabbits and I haven't seen any for a month (we are constantly on rabbit patrol, they live under our deck). Unless there is a nocturnal cat around and if that is the case I wish it would get after the moles and chipmunks!

Ken, you know I don't have a snow blower. We mow here 9 months a year. If it snows, we don't have school.

Bernd, I'm happy for an 89 degree day. It's a cool front. We're still in the mid to upper 90's in the afternoons. Nights are starting to cool down though.

drc, my hosta look end of the season tired. They had too much sun this year. I'm going to have to work that out some way before next spring.

Have to agree with TJ. After all the rain this summer...my hosta have never looked this good in Sept. Even my dh. has commented on how the back yard seems brighter and has more of a glow this year.
3 possibilities 1. All that rain.. I did water regularly especially last year when we had a watering system installed 2. More light coming into the yard from death of neighboring trees 3. Somewhere I read or heard that someone put milorganite around hosta and had few slugs. Since it was always raining I was too cheap to put out sluggo I gave this a try.. I have slug holes but not nearly as bad as usual

So the question is.. who has been sleeping on your hosta? Could a racoon be jumping off of a tree nearby and landing here?

I hope not. But it does seem to me that a rabbit is not big enough. All summer long some of the perennials in other beds look like a large animal has spent the night.

Got another water bill over $200 this month, due to lack of rain. We are not getting a lot of rain, even though they are predicting several days of it. Seems it just whizzes on by us.

It is 2am and the temp is 74F in Mobile. A really nice cool evening.
