Rather than sand for drainage, try something more like small gravel in size. There are ceramic soil conditioners you can buy. Schulz has a version that I have bought at Ace hardware that is pricey, but has worked for me. I've also used the gravel you can buy that comes in tube-shaped sacks for weighing down your pick up in the winter in the snow. I don't have a large number of options here in small town SD with no pick up for hauling. Maybe you don't have these problems where you are. Anyway, Draceanas need drainage, that's large air spaces in the dirt, for sure. Also, have you checked for soil mealybugs? They look like tiny yellow or white dots in the soil about sand size mostly around the roots. I had those in a gift dracaena and it got the dry leaves like those you describe in your larger plant, but not yellow ones. I ended up topping the plant and re-rooting it in new mix in a clean pot. I tossed the bottom.

Is this your first time growing tomatoes? I am asking because once plants get large and lower branches/leaves don't get enough sun to produce enough energy to justify their existence, the plant cuts them off and they turn yellow and eventually fall off...so I think this is likely perfectly normal -- but pretty early in the season for this to happen in your area, without seeing pics of the plants it is hard to tell for sure, and if you have grown in similar conditions before and have not seen this, maybe it is something else. The appearance of the branches that you have removed is not inconsistent with similar redundant/non-productive branches that I experience.
