What will grow under walnut trees?

Wonder if those of you who grow walnuts will post a list of plants that do well under these trees?

Ornamental grasses, including bamboo, tolerate the phytotoxic substance in walnut leaves.

I've 3 fairly large rhododendrons growing under the canopy of a large black walnut tree in my back yard. I grew tomatoes last year under this same tree during the summer and they did very well. These are two plants that are not supposed to do well under a walnut tree.

I use the black walnut leaves in fall to mulch the rhodies and the beds in my front yard.

As long as you dont plant too close to the walnut roots which are supposed to carry the maximum concentration of juglone, you should be just fine planting most anything.

Not necessarily a bad idea. If you are willing to water them, peonies are on the list of plants that can tolerate juglone. I don't know if peony and tree people are interchangeable in that regard. But that toxin is what one must consider when trying to grow anything near a walnut tree. There are a lot of other things to consider also, which would be factors when considering planting under any tree, such as increased shade as the tree grows larger, and whether or not you can find a place to dig where the roots don't make it impossible.

These don't appreciate shade and would be liable to appear even more gloomy and scruffy stuck beneath another tree than they do anyway. Then there is the matter of the visual tension produced by having a conical conifer stabbing up through a deciduous tree (unless the shade is heavy enough to prevent it from growing up through the branches of the walnut much). If you don't require tall plants use broadleaved evergreen shrubs with rounded or spreading growth habits instead of coniferous evergreens. If you require tall plants that will be likely to grow well above the bottom level of walnut branches it would be greatly preferable to have these located behind or beyond the spread of the tree branches.

here is what grows under my black walnut: mint, sorrel, sage, oregano, chives, parsley, nettles, fennel, various flower bulbs (asian lily, daffodil), various daisy type flowers (echinacea, black eye susan, regular daisy, cosmos), delphinium, iris. what does not grow: tomatoes, potatoes. grew poorly: several types of cucurbita, garlic and onions.

Sure, there are many websites that list those that can be grown successfully. I don't have personal experience because I planted a native plant garden under mine, not edibles. I rented a house for four years that had a huge Black Walnut in the front. I grew anything I wanted under it. Many plants may not have gotten as large or been as vigorous but nothing died. I had many hosta, ferns, spring bulbs, dwarf rhodies, and a lot of different perennials I can't remember in my shade garden under the tree.
