Tree Peoies under a Walnut tree?

I'm a newbie to this forum and I'm already hooked. I've been going through all of the posts and I came upon the one about tree peonies. Does anuyone know if they will survive near Black Walnut trees. I think I have a new obsession!! Thanks.......I think!

dont they need full sun ... for peak performance????

the type of tree might be irrelevant.. if there isnt enough sunlight

No, actually - in my experience - tree peonies prefer morning sun. My one plant is on the east side of my house with sun until about 2 pm. Some shade from a large tree. Even then, the flowers fry very quickly if it gets too warm. I can't imagine what they would do in full sun. It still blooms spectacularly each year so I know it's not light starved.

These don't appreciate shade and would be liable to appear even more gloomy and scruffy stuck beneath another tree than they do anyway. Then there is the matter of the visual tension produced by having a conical conifer stabbing up through a deciduous tree (unless the shade is heavy enough to prevent it from growing up through the branches of the walnut much). If you don't require tall plants use broadleaved evergreen shrubs with rounded or spreading growth habits instead of coniferous evergreens. If you require tall plants that will be likely to grow well above the bottom level of walnut branches it would be greatly preferable to have these located behind or beyond the spread of the tree branches.

There is a forum on here called plants for difficult places with many discussions about growing under/around walnuts. Virginia Tech has a good info sheet with lists of plants that don't mind juglone, and ones that are super-sensitive to it.

Tree Peonies are more shade tolerant than herbaceous Peonies. The blooming is not as prolific as on a full sun spot, but the flowers stay longer.

That being said, shade is not the main problem. Planting under trees means root competition, so lots of plants will not be able to get their full potential. Planting under black walnuts is even more restricted - black walnuts are poisonous and not many plants will tolerate this. Definitely a bad idea.

Not necessarily a bad idea. If you are willing to water them, peonies are on the list of plants that can tolerate juglone. I don't know if peony and tree people are interchangeable in that regard. But that toxin is what one must consider when trying to grow anything near a walnut tree. There are a lot of other things to consider also, which would be factors when considering planting under any tree, such as increased shade as the tree grows larger, and whether or not you can find a place to dig where the roots don't make it impossible.
