Franklin Park/German Village Garden Tour/Ohio's Garden Path

Hello! A gardening friend and I will be visiting Columbus on June 23-24. We'll be spending part of the time poring over historic plant catalogs at the Ohio Historical Center archives, but we're also planning to visit the places I'll list below.

1) We would love to meet with a few local gardeners who are available to visit these places:

- The exhibit "Ohio's Garden Path" about the history of gardening in Ohio at the Ohio Historical Center, late afternoon (3:00ish) on Saturday, June 23.

- German Village Haus & Garten Tour, Sunday morning, June 24 at 9:00.

- Frankling Park Conservatory, Sunday early afternoon after tour above.

If you'd like to meet up at any of these places, email me off list.

2) If you can recommend a nice, reasonably-priced place to stay within 20 minutes of Columbus, that would be appreciated, too!

Now my curiosity is definitely piqued! I think I'll visit the Internet Movie Database since I am not by any stretch a John Wayne movie buff. I agree with BakeMom that gardening is good therapy. Almost nothing makes me happier than finding a new seedling growing in my garden or finally seeing a combination come together.... Tonight I discovered that my Japanese hakone grass has sprouted a new seedling, or maybe it's a new clump formed from a runner. Either way I don't care because I just LOVE that plant! BakeMom, ditto the UIM comment, UGH! Everytime I had one of those issues I had to do research all over again just to keep it straight and see which way the S. Ct. was ruling this week. :) Now, which Judge likes to torture him or herself with roses? My guess would be Sadler? Anne Taylor (Muni) is also an avid gardener. I run into her usually every year at the chadwick sale. All this gardening talk is making me get the itch to go outside. Too bad it's 9 p.m. and I can't see anything out there. Where do you get the energy to go out after work? Sometimes all I can get the energy to do is pull a few weeds and do some deadheading. That's probably why my patio still has so many pots of plants on it waiting to go in the ground! :)

Please continue to share your experiences and photos, they're loved by all. I'm sorry, no offense was intended. I first heard the flag story years ago from Canadian tourists in Europe and I have heard it several more times. Canada is a lovely country with lovely people (I just returned home from a 10 day visit, one of many I've made). I was repeating what I was told by Canadians, not originating a slur. But on another score, remember that both the people who most benefited from the Allied war effort as well as those who served in the military are mostly long gone. No one is waiting for buses of Allied military descendents to disembark so that gratitude can be expressed. Today there was a ceremony and the French President offered humble thanks for everything that was done. That's what governments and public officials do. The daily reality is that people just get on with their lives without reference to what happened so many years ago that many don't think of it more than once a year when reminded by a TV or newspaper story. One of the most memorable things I have ever done in my life was tromping through the everglades a couple summers ago. Took my husband and three kids. Paid a great company called 'Garl's coastal Kayaking' to take us on a day tour of the everglades. Instead of looking from a road, we really did trudge through the everglades in our mosquito suits , into a mangrove, next to an alligator hole. There were no alligators in the hole though. The water was supposedly too high. I Passed by tall trees, brown snakes, 15 kinds of Orchids, airplants, moss. My shoes wouldn't stay on so I had to walk through the muck barefooted, which my guide said was what "Garl" always did. Our guide was a young Doctor, we called him Dr. Don. He was funny and very excited about everything. While traveling down the long lonely Evergaldes highway to the ocean, he saw a giant Eastern Diamond back rattle snake crossing the road. He quickly pulled the white van over, jumped out with his camera and gave us some arousing information about this snake. We went on to the south Florida boarder where our Kayaks were. Dr. Don and his friend took us on a six mile paddle (no current!) where I saw a three gators, about a thousand jumping fish (no good for eatting) , one wild flamingo, lots of sea birds, Storks, ducks and a group of wild manatees. Paddling along shore on the way back we stupidly braved out the mosquitos who flew out to greet us in the dark. I recommend putting the suits back on, looking back at our complaining and flailing arms. Dr. Don had wine, crackers and cheese for us out on the water but we declined because we were determined to get back before dark, which still didn't happen. Although I've been to some pretty interesting places, I'd love to return to, the Everglades was one of the most hands on and the most enjoyable. (in the USA). I have some out of state places in mind that were equally wonderful. Have to add, the electrified tennis rackets Dr. Don gave us, worked great on the mosquitoes. We were gratefully sizzling the tiny beasts all day. One more thing. Go to FRANKS fruit market near the park, Mangos the size of footballs. Frank even cut one up for us to take on the trip. Sooooo GOOD!

OP might be gone but an interesting report on a BVT X arboreum in Toronto here: http://growingontheedge.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7807&start=255 So, it was dying back in colder winters, but surviving overall...and had a very nice, exotic looking truss. Cross that with the hardiest R. maximum you can scrounge up from the mountains of New England or whatnot...and sure, I don't think a semi-arborescent rhododendron for 5b is out of the question. The issue is as I said nobody has really tried to breed something like that - the goal after the 19th century in rhododendron breeding has almost always been low bushy plants; furthermore BVT, one of the hardiest species, wasn't really used by the pioneering first or 2nd generation of American hybridizers. It wasn't available to them.

Monica, I think you will have a great time! I will be working that weekend, so not able to join you, but hopefully someone else will. Even though you are from that place up north!

As for a place to stay, we are lucky in that there are many nice hotels in the area. My parents like to stay at the Country Inn North right off I-71(it is close to my home)--they say it is always clean, quiet and comfortable, although the immediate neighborhood looks like it is on a downslide; I would feel safe there.

I like to use Tripadvisor.com when searching for hotels because it has comments by other travelers. Then I go to Hotwire.com to get a good price! You might want to focus your search in the Worthington(Crosswoods/ Hutchinson Ave.)/ Polaris (north outerbelt) areas as there are many nice places there in good areas with easy access (10-15 minutes) to the sites you want to visit. I think that there are places close to the convention center/downtown also reasonable, nice, and close to the short north "arts & dining" district.

I'm not sure if we can say were we work..but I work at The Ohio Historical Society. Sorry I won't get to meet you. I'm not in on Saturday's.
I'm sure my co-workers in the library will assist you in your search for historic garden catalogs.
If you haven't visisted OHS web site. It is http://www.ohiohistory.org
You should be able to do some search the collections for garden catalogs.

Thanks for writing. I searched the online catalog and have a printout of the catalogs I want to see. I also emailed ahead to ask for any archive policies, etc.

Yep, I'm German. We're more prepared than Boy Scouts! ;-)

I've booked at a little-known B&B, Schopf House. Have you heard of it?

Not only am I from "that place up north," I work for "that University up north." ;-) But don't worry, as a master gardener, I'm definitely GREEN (MSU), not blue (U-M). And (blasphemy!) I'm not at all enthused about football.)

But I am excited about my trip to Columbus! It's all good!
