where do you order your hostas?

Being in the sticks I dont get much of a selection around the area and want to order online but I dont know who is reputable, any favs?

I have ordered from many different nurseries this year, and some of my favorites are (in no specific order):

Avalon Acres Hostas and More (Denny)
Hallsons Gardens (Chris)
New Hampshire Hostas
Naylor Creek
Jim's Hostas (Jim, of course!)

just to name a few. All good quality.

Agreed about Baker Creek - wow, what a catalogue! Just gorgeous, and they have a terrific selection of exotic items. They sell only open-pollinated varieties, no hybrids. For people on a budget or just starting/restarting a garden, Pinetree Garden Seeds (www.superseeds.com) sells small packets of vegetable and herb seeds for cheap. They have a lot of seeds for But I want to be clear - they do put fewer seeds in a packet than most places. So you should consider how many seeds you'll use each year and how many years the seeds are likely to keep. For me and my small garden, in most cases the small packets from Pinetree are about all I am likely to use before the seeds lose vigor. However, if I were sharing seed with other gardeners or planting more of each type of plant, the bigger packs with more seeds would make more sense. (For a few really common seeds, there's no difference in the number of seeds per packet. Genovese Basil for example: 100 seeds for $1.35 at Pinetree or $3.95 at Johnny's or Burpee.) Another place to look for exotic tomatoes and peppers is Totally Tomatoes (www.totallytomato.com). They have very little besides tomatoes and peppers, though.

I like webwalkway.com, Naylor Creek, Hallson's, Northern Grown, White Oak, Bridgewood, and the weekly Saturday farmer's markets in both Iowa City and Des Moines. The first six do mail order, the farmer's markets usually have several hosta sellers with a pretty good selection and some of the more unusual or newer hostas. If you live in an area with a farmer's market, check it out--it's surprising how many markets have at least one person with hostas.

Here's my article titled SPRING HOSTA TIPS: Spring Hosta Tips The snow is melting and Spring is on the way. Youve been anxiously waiting for the chance to walk through your gardens and dream about the new plants youÂve ordered from your favorite mail order catalogs. And, you canÂt wait to put your gloves on and get your gardens cleaned up. Hold on. Tip #1: DonÂt remove that winter mulch until the last frost is gone. Early arrivals, like montana ÂAureomarginataÂ may require additional protection from that late season cold and wind. When all danger of frost is past, then go for it. Get your rake and wheelbarrow. Tip #2: Thoroughly clean your gardens. All debris should be raked and added to the compost bin to eliminate a breeding ground for slugs. Be careful not to rake or step on the eyes that are just popping up to avoid damaging the leaves which are about to unfold. Are your plants in good shape? Tip #3: Look to see if the frost has heaved your plants out of the ground- especially young hostas which were planted last year. As the ground freezes and thaws, freezes and thaws, and freezes and thaws (get the idea?), those plants may need to be tucked in on several occasions. Can your friends easily read those plant labels? Or has the name tag completely disappeared? Tip #4: Make sure all plants, including new arrivals, are accurately labeled and the tags are in good condition. Remember that large hostas will cover up name tags that are too close to the mound. Perhaps you have trees and shrubs which need to be pruned. Tip #5: Spring is the best time to prune most trees, and shrubs after flowering. Those branches which are dead, or make it too shady, should be cut off cleanly, chipped up, and added to the compost bin or reserved for a woodchip path. That pile of leaves, garden waste, and grass clippings from last Fall should be flipped over now. Tip #6: Turn over your compost pile. You may want to add a little sand. The warm, rainy weather will turn all that stuff into black gold. Then when those hot summer days reach 70 or 80 degrees, apply that free mulch around the base of your plants. How is your supply of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides? Tip #7: Take an inventory of your gardening supplies- tools, gloves, hoses, sprinklers, wheelbarrows, fencing, tomato cages, etc. Shop and replace worn out items now so that youÂre not stuck in the middle of a job. Spring is a great time to divide and transplant your hostas. Did you promise to give a hosta to a friend, or donate a plant for the hosta auction? You can create interest and educate others about gardening, and eventually turn your neighborhood into a hostaholic community. Tip #8: Spring is the best time to dig in your hosta bed. Review your garden records from last Fall to see which ones need your attention. How wonderful to see those long awaited hostas shoot up, bigger and stronger than the year before! Tip #9: DonÂt neglect to apply a slow release fertilizer. But donÂt over fertilize, and keep those granules off the newly emerging leaves, or crown, of the plants. Above all, enjoy the fresh Spring breeze, the chirp of the robins, and the signs of life as they appear, knowing that old man Winter is giving way to a new season of hosta gardening and fun everywhere!

Don't get me wrong - we adore Peet's, but their specialty has always been dark-roasted coffees. We get the French or Italian in a just-up-from-powdered-Turkish grind, brewed through Chemex filters. I long ago broke the Chemex glass pot and realized it's the filters and the cone shape that make the difference. A cheap plastic cone works just as well, but the Chemex bonded filters are a must. Compare side-by-side with a paper filter and you can tell the difference immediately. We filter into a vaccuum pot if we're not going to drink it right away; it holds it very well for about 4-5 hours. On the Left Coast we are passionate about coffee and Starbucks fans are regarded with smirks. As you enjoy medium roasts with a lower acidity than dark roasted coffees - and many people do, I do myself on occasion - I'm wondering if you have tried the national brands of Chock Full o'Nuts (which ranked quite high in a Fine Cooking taste test a few years ago) and....Dunkin' Donuts. DD is making big ripples in the San Francisco Bay Area with a report by a Millennial blogsite that was just published yesterday. They included DD for a joke in a taste test against three of the highest-regarded new artisanal coffee roasters (so new they are post-Blue Bottle, who has gone from coffee cart to Establishment specialty in less than 3 yrs). DD came in second - no small feat! I've had all three artisanal coffees, and they're very good indeed. The short column from Eater SF is linked below. I have ordered from Hallson's and from Naylor Creek and received great plants from both.

I like Hallsons ,In The Country Nursery , & White Oak Hostas best. Different places carry different selections, these have a good listing & great plants , great service. I really felt I got much more for the $$ w/ these places than others I have tried.

I've had great luck with Hallson, Plant Delights, White Oak, and Naylor Creek.

They all do great....but I've noticed that "Hallson" takes an extra step to please me. Those little 'intangible' extras impress me and keep me coming back for more as my pocketbook allows.

I have had good luck with DirectSource Hosts. Great selection and reasonable prices

I had very good experience with

Northern Grown perennials- sends bonus plant, pleasure to deal with
Hallson gardens- plants I got from Chris last year doing amazingly well, sends bonus plant
Naylor Creek- lots of not so common varieties, double eye at least for every plant
Chuck Plemmons- hostaman- prices are great, excellent root system, ordered again, bonus plant
Hosta patch- no bonus plant but few of the plants from my order were super sized- multiple eyes, had to dig really big holes to get them in.
Recently I ordered from Kirby gardens and got nice plants with good root system. I ordered 3 plants, they were out of 1 so I got a bonus plant as "compensation for trouble" ;) Prices were less than many other companies on newer varieties
Of course, New Hampshire hosta clearance sale was excellent deal as well and plants came in healthy and good root system.

If you go to Hostasgalore website- he lists hosta sources by state and his favorite ebay sellers- I found it to be great help to search for hosta places nearby.
Just placed an order to Dawn's bloomers as they had few of the hostas I've been looking for- Blue Shadows, Forest Shadows and l/s San Kao- will report.
Have been eying Hillcrest hostas in IA- they have amazing 1500 varieties to choose from but am not sure if my budget for this year will take it ;)

Flower Factory - great selection, a little pricey.
HostasDirect.com - Bonus hosta at $50 increments.

I second HostasDirect-
I purchased several tissue culture plants from them almost a month age and was given a bonus of a division- and a couple of other bonus plants as well..
I did not purchase through the mail however- I live in the Twin Cities and went over to their sales location- I hand picked the little darlings myself- I was quite surprised at how small the cells were that the hosta were growing in- but quite amazed at how many healthy roots there were to each of the plants!!
When I got them home a month ago- I planted them into larger pots and they really put on growth very quickly! I planted them out today- and the roots look like several of the very healthy divisions I have grown on for 1+ years...
I went over to the growing location just last week and took a stroll through the yard just to admire the views- and take notes for the wish list.... Very nice hosta there...

I purchased three times this year from Hallson. Very pleased with what I got. I purchased one time from Jim's Hosta and will likely purchase again from him. I am a big fan of Hallson though.
