Jim You will have to adapt the approach to the northern hemisphere but I have been teaching this successful approach for several years. Pruning commences as soon as the leaves open. Allow the new shoots to extend to 3 pairs of leaves, then cut back to a single pair of leaves. Repeat this process until the last day of Spring. Stop pruning immediately as flowering buds commence developing at this time. After flowering is finished remove all flowering shoots back to the leaves. In Autumn only prune those shoots that you do not want. Repeat the process each year, not only will you get flowers but ramification will also increase. NB This will only produce flowers on wood that has matured. good luck dennis Mc

Thanks Susan I'm in Milford Pennsylvania in gold key lake estates, basically a forest by 3 lakes and swamps lol I have its container open so it can emerge and adequately spread/dry it's wings in a contained and controlled room. I did the same for my polyphemus moth and it worked out very well and she mated almost immediately after I brought her outside, with gloves, careful not to damage her wings. Also have the option of opening the window screen if it's difficult to catch it etc. Thanks again:)

Hi PoohBear, At work , a couple of months ago , I planted 2 Hoya imperialis . I placed them several feet apart at the foot of a mature Banyan , ( Ficus tree ). The soil was lovely in that location , so I didn't amend it , just spread the natural leaf mulch back over the area. The Hoyas took immediately to their new 'home' , and they are busy winding up the prop roots. I planted them facing east. They get morning sun , which turns dappled , then shaded by afternoon. Of course the vines will 'choose their own light'. These plants had been in the greenhouse , so they had gotten a little out of control. Imperialis does not have very obedient vines !! They bloomed last winter , ( in the greenhouse ). The flowers are large and really showy and they take quite a while to develop, however I don't remember much in the way of fragrance , certainly not like lacunosa or compacta. Of course that could be my memory !!! You are in zone 10. Why not plant yours in the ground and train it to go up a tree or over an arbour ? If you don't want it to 'disappear' up the tree , you could train the vines to go down , then back up again , maintaining the plant at a desired height. This is what some growers do with their vanilla orchids , to keep the flowers at a reasonable height , ( for hand pollinating ). Florajilly
