I agree with pit... You may be interested in a reply I left to a post similar to yours recently: Prepare for a spring transplanting by root-pruning now. Make intermittent cuts around the circumference of the tree in a circle about the size that will yield the largest root-ball you're comfortable moving. The object is to sever about half the existing roots so that fine, feeder roots will form on the severed roots close to the trunk so you can include them when you move the plant. This will lessen the shock of transplanting and speed re-establishment in its new site. Lift and transplant in spring as soon as frost goes out of the ground or about 2 weeks before you expect buds to move. Dig a hole larger in diameter than necessary. Plant with the basal flare exposed and backfill with native soil only. If you know your soil, supply an appropriate fertilizer blend that's low in N. Tomato fertilizer is a good choice for fall feeding of trees or shrubs to be lifted soon. Al

I don't recall that they grow extremely fast Laurel so it might do fine in a large planter. They are a beautiful shrub. If you question it, you might put a call into one of your local garden centers. I hope you get to take it with you.

B thunbergii has green foliage. It is B thunbergii 'Atropurpurea' and other red leaved cultivars that have the burgundy foliage. If you sow seeds of the coloured cultivars you will get a mix of leaf colours in the offspring but the majority will be coloured. So no, it would not be unusual. Note that B thunbergii is listed as an invasive species in NC.

They can completely cover the ground and cause people to assume it's rhzomatous, like Goutweed, but it's rather easy to control imo. One always has to check for any further growth after removing them, but prophets of doom enjoy scaring people. They are always on hand when someone needs to ID an umbellifer. They can't wait to pour out their sinister descriptions of Poison Hemlock and the evil Cow Parsnip.Why, just looking at them from a distance can cause severe blistering of ones eyeballs, and make sure you keep your mouth closed when passing Conium maculatum, so the leaves don't jump into your mouth Lol.
