I'll bet you added that plastic border fairly recently. Either that or you cut a root while weeding. The baby formed from a severed root of the larger crape. the root system of the baby tree probably mainly radiates out away from the parent tree, so you can keep that in mind when you go to dig it up. I'd try to get at least a foot of root length (based on my guesstimate of size from the picture and assuming root structure similar to what I'd expect in this situation). Crape myrtle root divisions are pretty easy to transplant. Just take your time and get a reasonable amount of root as you remove your baby crape. You may also want to be careful not to cut a lot more of the parent tree's roots in the process of digging up the baby. I'd give this job a rating of easy. P.S. Be careful to get down deep enough to get a good piece of root. Depending on various factors, the bulk of the root system on some of these can be deeper than what you might expect from a seedling of similar size.

Well, I dug them up this weekend. Since these figs have been cut back year after year their root masses are just gigantic tangles knots near the surface. I managed to sever a few 1 inch dimaeter roots from the main tree that had 18 inch sprouts and small roots. One of them is severely wilted. I might just cut back all of the laves on it. The other three I took are consistently droopy but not getting better or worse. I take that as a good sign. The leaves are still firm, but hang somewhat downward. I figure it will take some time for them to get their roots sufficiently established. Thanks for all the advice. if thye live I'll let you know. Also, I think they are Brown Turkey or Celeste. I still have a hard time telling the differnce.

yep that first picture is exactly how it looks. it's 2 of my oldest patriots, that used to have much larger leaves, but as it's gotten larger in girth the leaves have increasingly gotten smaller. So what i guess i'll do is dig out the center and replant it elsewhere and maybe put a lilly in the center. might look a tad odd though. wish i could remember what those flowers were that have absolutely no leaf but a tall stock and cool looking star burst kind of flower. Only thing about that is they only bloom at the end of summer and with no greenery still a big hole in center of hosta the rest of the time, but would look cool for about a week.
