ID Please! Scutellaria?

Found this neat little plant on the side of the road in a scrubby cutover area in N Louisiana near the Tx border. It has square stems so that means it's the mint family I guess. Narrow leaves. I'm thinking Scutellaria- doesn't look like a salvia to me. Anybody have any ideas?

See if my picture helps. This is downy skullcap, one of the scutellarias. I took the picture the day the plant was given to me so it may be a bit floppier than it would normally be. I love mine! I collected seeds right away and have a decent amount to grow more. Maureen

There are a lot of native Scutellaria in Texas - I was surprised. I am only familiar with 3 (S. incana, S. integrifolia, and S. elliptica) and it doesn't look like any of them. That only rules out 3 of them! I was hoping that one of the other Texas folks might chime in. But you may just have to walk through the possibilities. No not scutellaria elliptica either,I have grown that one and that one can be ruled out as well as humilis,galericulata,tournefortii,ventenatii,ovata,tesselata,nana,costericana,playfairii,sp from yucatan,pontica,salviafolia,albida,indica,altissima and javanica and a few others that I have grown.

Yay! I think you got some for sure! I know based on the fact that I threw 16 some odd photos at you guys it seems like I’m too lazy to look it up myself but I swear I scoured pinterest and these were the ones that evaded me i assume pachyphytum is the puffy guy in pic 1 with 3 leaves. I thought that was just a super puffy Eche! I think that’s it! But I think I’ll have to wait until it gets bigger to narrow down the particular pachyphytum it is. Impossible to tell at this stage. The long stem of the Sempervivum threw me off but I see it now. Which is great because I killed every Semp I ever owned so I finally kept one alive! I actually own a Fang but the mother leaf looks so different compared to this mother leaf, I second guessed it. Google shows both shapes though! omg, who knew how many different types of rhipsalis exist and they all look almost identical! I searched for one with just the right amount of fuzz. I think it may be Rhipsalis Ewaldiana! The graptopetalum changed itself to graptoveria silver star but it’s spot on! Thank you very much :) I think I can check them all off my list now!

Frank, it looks more like a penstemon than a scutellaria to me. If you look at momamamo's photo, the flowers have a distinctive hump at the top, common to scutellarias. Your's doesn't have that.

Penstemons bloom in late spring/early summer. Was this a recent photo, or one you have on file, blooming earlier this year? There are a lot of penstemons, in different colors. I've linked to A good site below.

Thanks for the replies! And the more I look at it the less is looks like a scutellaria- definitly no hood. I originally thought penstemon but the main stem seems square-must be an illusion. It is in full bloom right now! Strange like you said for a penstemon. Fortunately the person that yanked the whole plant up said there are many more so I will be going to collect seed just before a frost. I hope they will be ripe. Very neat little X-mas shaped bushes. Oddly the yanked-up plant's leaves are fried but it continues to open flowers! Thanks Frank
