Anise Hyssop w/o seeds?

I recently noticed a neighbour was growing anise hyssop.

Upon examining the flowers I was surprised to find

there were no seeds,either on the dried flowerheads

or on the flowers with petals remaining.It was the same story last year.Can anybody tell me why this happens?

Tiny seed in small individual flowers. Best to retrieve seed by bending flower spike upside-down to spill tiny seed out of the individual flowers. Flowers may still hold some color when seed is ready. Birds love to eat Anise Hyssop seed so you'll have to be diligent with timing.

There are sterile varieties such as the one in the link so that is another possibility.

Hmmmm ... I guess it may depend on location, since some of the ones people have listed as NOT blooming the first year have bloomed in their first year for me - Dianthus, Asclepias, and Rudbeckia. I did have to wait for the following: Aquilegia Belamcanda chinensis (Blackberry Lily) Echinacea Geum Shasta Daisy Gaillardia Kniphofia Penstemon Hey, after looking at snow for two months or more, I'm happy to look at some green, blooms are just icing on the cake! It is doubtful they would survive a transplant at this stage, and they are sooooooo easy to start from seed... Roadside sounds best. :o)

I've collected agastache foeniculum seed before.
This may well be a sterile variety.Is there
one that looks just like standard anise hyssop
yet is sterile?

Possible, I really don't know off the top of my head. It could also be that particular plant is a sterile plant. Sterile varieties all start with a single sterile plant.

I wish I did!Someone sent me a few years ago and the plants
grew for many years and produced many seeds.I'll go out
today and see if I can scavenge a few.I'll ask you to email or PM your addy if I find some.You can always buy them here www.richters.com.

I grew Agastache 'Blue Fortune' for years, until it petered out (pretty plant). It never once made a seedling, perhaps because it is a sterile hybrid. However, I received some Anise hyssop plants in a swap, and they reseed abundantly! Too much, really, I find them everywhere. Easy to weed out though.

'Blue Fortune' and 'Black Adder' are both sterile hybrids. Agastache foeniculum re-seeds VERY MUCH, so if you want seedlings, get that one. It is a straight native species. The former two are hybrids, possibly of A. foeniculum and A.rugosa (Korean species).
