I'm all ears, too. After seeing this planting in a British H & G magazine, I was planning to grow some myself.

It's really easy, and if you get flowers from even one lone plant, you will probably have 500 of them the next spring; at least here on Cape Cod, they self-sow very well.

I have to admit I started with a plant, not with seeds, and have never actually tried planting seeds. I'd hedge my bets if I needed more VB, I'd plant half in pots and direct-sow the other half. The seedlings do look a little like some common weeds, so be careful - maybe planting in rows would be helpful.

I feel ambivalent about them because they are such rampant self-sowers. In areas where you don't want them, they can still come up years later.

You can always dead-head them, and the seedlings are easy to pull once you know what they look like. I wouldn't want to be without these see-though plants in my garden, but then my standards, especially when it comes to orderliness, are notoriously low. LOL.

Another supposedly aggressive self seeder that hits my mulch and dies. I had these things. I liked these things. They bloomed for a long time, and looked very nice with the Moonbeam coreopsis they were next to. I had been warned that the original plants would probably bite the dust fairly quickly, but that their offspring would happily populate my garden for many years.

I really love the effect they make in a Tropical garden with musa's, ensete's, canna's, dahlia's heck anything Tropical.
I also want to include them with my David Austin 'Carding Mill' rose.

I just want to make sure that I sow them correctly.
Self seed or not I have to make this a staple in our garden.

I'm also crazy for Mina lobata(Spanish flag vine).
I can't seem to find that plant in our local nurseries; too bad.

I was thinking of direct sowing this weekend with some gravel. I also want to try sowing some in a plastic pot and leaving it outside and see what happens.

Let me know if there is anything else I should do concerning the sowing of the seeds.

I'd definitely try some VB seeds indoors in pots too, so the plants have a bit of a head start.

If your VB sowing trials don't work, I can bring some to WhiteGarden's or Lisa's swap, if I'm not out to sea, or I can mail you a few (let's say a hundred or so) seedlings.

They have Mina lobata seeds at Thompson and Morgan. Most nurseries don't carry tender vines; we're lucky enough to have a local nursery that specializes in tender plants, and they'll grow just about anything I suggest - I don't have any way to start seeds in the house, for various reasons.

Yes, they flower the first year. So, they can be grown as annuals.
