King Tut

I bought it because it was pretty much sun tolerant but a good majority of the leaves are scorched, mind you, it's only in its second year. In your opinion, should I leave it where it is or should I move it to some sort of shadier location? If I do that, will the leaves still be golden or will they stay pretty much green? Thanks

scorching would indicate to me ... that it is lacking water ... before i would worry about too much sun

is it properly watered for the amount of sun it gets ... if so ... then it needs more protection.. as you think ...

green versus gold... all depends on the light level.. and it is nearly impossible to guess what might occur in your garden.. in your light ...

It doesn't lack water, we've had showers here almost every single day for weeks. It actually seems to have shrunk, but I think that's because the leaves are curled. Other than that, it gets full sun. Go figure though, all this rain and the hostas still look great, even though there's probably a million snails. Too many hostas to go picking off.

good idea cactus. I overwintered it (once) in the garage (above freezing yet cool) cut back and kept on the dry side.... just a little watering once a month or so. It was alongside the dahlias and cannas. I've killed it indoors though. I've read that it grows easily from seed (Christopher Lloyd) and the seedlings will overwinter indoors. Might try this some time to see how it works out.

I've got a couple that are just fine... but they are tokudamas and they are very slow. My largest one gets the most light. I can always pick it out - maybe because of the multicolored Indonesian woodcarving of a head-and-shoulders King Tut sitting next to it... I started them from tc, believe it or not... I'm guessing in 1999 or 2000. My disappointment is not the color but that they don't get that fantastic texture that is the hallmark of the tokudamas. I still get people asking for it, though... so I sell a couple every couple year.

Thanks Sue. The muslin trees were amazing and I loved the harp. I lived in Philly in the 70's and the show was as big and memorable 30 odd years ago as it seems to be today. Few showers now and then rarely do good job in my garden below top inch of the soil. It has to be good long soaking rain to do decent job.
Try to check your soil after rain and see how much water it actually gets. You might be surprised, specially if there are nearby trees.
